Vo.. Vocaloid?

What exactly is vocaloid? I've read something about it on the net, and done a little research (with little profit, wikepedia is boring) since I've been seeing the word "vocaloid" around the net pretty often.
All I know about it is,
-it's a kind of program that can create music, with recorded vocals, instruments, and others.
-it's often referred to as the "future of music",
-a lot of videos of it's music are up on youtube,
-and that characters like "gumi" and "miku" are associated with it.
So please, enlighten me. who knows, maybe I myself may get interested.
Many thanks. :D

The vocaloid technology is basically this: We have a voice-actor/actress recording syllables that you as the user of a program later can choose from and, ofc, edit up to a certain point. Such as pitch, length, tense and so on.
Thus, you can record your lyrics without the actual need of a singer.
As for instruments you can't record them using only the vocaloid program (from what I understand t least) but the vocaloid programs support both Rewire and VSTi and can be used together with other programs, like Reason, FL-Studio, Logic or Cubase, and probably a bunch more.
And yes, most vocaloids have their own mascots as well, Hatsune Miku began gaining popularity somehow and it became a thing, so nowadays they're essentially virtual idols.

I understood nothing from the second paragraph :D but I pretty much understood what it meant generally. I've listened to this vocaloid song, It's titled "melt", and it was.. unique? I dunno, I appreciate the work behind it but the traditional j-rock seems to be much more of a hair-raiser; not that I'm against vocaloid fans. maybe it's because I dont speak japanese. The vocaloid with the short yellow hair is cute, though.

Well, vocaloid music is not more "unique" than anything else, how it sounds depends solely on the artist creating the music. Melt is made by Supercell, whom is making pretty cool music imo, for the most part. You should go listen to some of Deco*27's songs, I'd say he's one of the few artists using vocaloid that's worth listening to.
