So what do Fakku citizen do to maintain their computer to prevent it from slowing down?
Lets us share so we can help each other. Right now I can't share anything since I'm a computer noob. But I will post if I learn some =)

- Dust regularly
- Defragment regularly
- (If Windows) Clean up temporary files
- Shut it down every night
- Connect it to a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
- Minimize the amount of processes on startup
- Don't run too many processes at once
- Don't attempt to run software that your computer cannot handle
- Maintain 10-15% free disk space
- (As mentioned before) Keep it free of spyware, malware, and viruses
- Replace parts that break
Listed in no particular order or necessity.

I agree that everything listed by Tegumi is a good idea. I do however fail to see how dusting can have any influence on the speed of the computer

Besides it's a good habit to keep your computer clean, I've seen way too many computers with half centimetre thick coats of dust inside that have died early deaths.
Aside from the stuff Tegumi already mentioned, I try to run as 'light' as possible keeping the amount of stuff installed to a minimum with apps and games that I actually use installed.
Also a monthly clean up of the computer helps clear up trash lying around on the computer helps.

i didn't buy a 1tb HDD just so i could delete everything that's not getting used currently =]
i leave everything on my computer, even music that i don't even like anymore. lol.
defraging and cleaning up temp files and all that jazz seems to do just fine. my computer could be a little faster like it was brand new, but its not a significant enough difference that im willing to go through uninstalling and deleting stuff i may want to put back on sooner or later.

Well honestly that is stupid, if an installed program is not being used anymore there is no reason to keep it. Installed programs on windows also leave entries in the registration database and possibly other places, which will help slow your computer down.
The same goes for data, the more old crap you get rid of before defragging, the better your defrag tool can optimize how it places the data on the HDD (remember that the order and physical placement of data has an influence on the data transfer speed)

Just so people know if you're the owner of an SSD (Solid State Hard drive) you do not have to defrag due to the zero seek times, in fact defrag degrades the drive's life span.
Before you run out and buy ssds just keep in mind normal keep your hard drive clean procedures still apply.

Keep my software up to dateA novel idea, but doesn't necessarily help. Updates can often contain more more features, which can slow down your system.
Your score is: 80% repeat, 10% what, and 10% wrong. That makes it 100% useless. Thanks for playing, have a nice day.

Install Linux.
No really, it's kinda an windows-thingy that it gets slower over time. Other OSes are usally not (noticibly) affected.

This, though I often let it run over night. What can I say, the humming helps me sleep =P
