Would you sacrifice someone you care about for others?

I'd sacrifice myself if I believed it was the only way to save a huge group of people. The topic is actually asking whether or not you would rather have someone you truly care about die other than a group of people you don't even know.

True, but until you got a situation to sacrifice yourselft to save someone you love, you wont know if you are really going to do that.

That was horrible. The video is an entire summary of an actual movie. I can't believe I just watched a summary of an amazing movie. The video butchered the movie. I am sad.
Here is part one.

Ugh...my opinion is biased as I don't have a child so I would say I'd save the group of people cause more numbers. 100+>1 son.
Maybe when I become a father one day my opinion will change.

If I were to choose between the survival of myself and my loved ones versus that of all of humanity, well...too bad for humanity.

Remember me?
That's easily the most depressing thing I've seen today.

I don't know what I'd do, it's way to tough of a decision.

Of course in the heat of the moment I have no idea what I'd do, but as things stand I would not doom someone I love to die for a bunch of random strangers. Also, you said " situation to sacrifice yourselft". I was talking about sacrificing a loved one to save a bunch of strangers, not sacrificing myself. Sorry if this is a little nitpicky.

I feel that no matter what the bond, a person must learn to look beyond a personal scope. This can be applied to the military: a close friend saved or a battalion gets the air support it's up to you to call in. You either go help your friend or you laze the target. What would you do? (Apologies for the malformed scenario)
Of course this is easier to speculate on that actually acting on, but this thread does a good job of showing the lack of pragmatism in people. It is something aspired to, but rarely attained.

I like your analogy on this one. +rep from me.
As for me, I don't know what I'd do if I were in that situation. Maybe right now, I'd say I wouldn't, but then our conscience does have a habit of influencing our final decisions at the last minute. =P

When you put this in terms of military, respectively, you make bonds with your fellow battles. You grow to learn the people you worked with personally. I, for one, believe that Sacrificing my fellow soldier for that of all others, is morally wrong. Tactically, it is the correct thing to do. Military states " Don't leave a fellow soldier behind " I uphold that with pride. But at times, even the best of good judgement goes out the door. It, respectively, follows what that person considers is dire in the situation.

Well if you're following the ideal of never leaving a man behind, then you're still doing the morally wrong thing. You're leaving dozens of men, maybe even a hundred behind. These are men that are friends with one another as well, these men may have lived far better lives than your friend. It's kind of ignorant to condemn them all because of a notion.

The phrase itself is ironic, but a high percentage believe, sacrifice one save all. It's " Situation dictates "

True...if only everything this defining could be so black and white as the scenarios we design. The grey areas are so massive.
In the end, it will be the values you hold dear and the nature of the situation that decide what path will be taken.
In short, yes, I would agree with the philosophy of 'situation dictates', afro.
