I grew from shear fan base it became so popular for people being assholes that if you wanted to be an asshole there was a place where you wouldn't be banned for it.

Also I think this leans more towards Random then SD.

Basically, 4chan is the best and the worst of the internet. It does have interesting content and images, but you have to take the good with the bad. I think that it's so popular because people enjoy taking that gamble, (or they might actually, *le gasp* enjoy the bad content, who knows?).

4chan is basically a window into the subconscious mind of the entire human race. Because there are basically no rules on /b/ people post whatever comes to mind. This is usually pornographic or otherwise disturbing, but it is the truth

I believe its popular because people are able to say what they wish to say without being judged. that power creates a kind of an alter ego within a person and allows to spill their hearts and terrorize to their hearts desire. that's just my theory tho.

I agree. I think when people get some measure of unparalleled freedom to do what they want, it can spawn some good and some bad things. Especially when you can find so many people with the same interests as you do.

Why do people like 4-chan? Why the lack of boundaries, of course.

On 4chan (specifically, /b/), three powerful things come together: Anonymity, mob mentality, and approval (of things normally seen as horrible).

When a person goes to 4chan, he is anonymous, so he can say things that he normally could not without fear of repercussion. There are people there who will agree with him, and he can be part of a group that works together. Finally, he can speak openly about the things he likes without fear of being mocked or made fun of. (Well, kind of. A lot of things are accepted, such as liking real little girls, being racist, loving violence, being an asshole, etc. At the same time, some things are not accepted, such as furry.)

Thus, a person can go to 4chan, talk about how he hates black people and wants to fuck the little girl who lives down the street, and not only be accepted, but be seen as a cool, funny guy who's with like-minded people.

Think of it as the infinite monkey theorem. If an unlimitted amount of monkeys would be hammering into their keyboards, every once in a while a great work of literature would come into existence. The fun part is looking for that gem. Makes you feel like an explorer navigating through uncharted territory (and fighting off cannibals while you're at it)


The other thing is that people love to dish out without needing to take it.

I believe it's mainly to satisfy their basic mental needs:

Sex, Entertainment (Lulz), and Ego-Boost.

What hosts all three?

Strip Clubs, Bars (.. can totally fail on the sex end.), 4Chan.
All three are popular.
