LONDON, England (Reuters) -- A giant asteroid is heading for Earth and could hit in 2014, U.S. astronomers have warned British space monitors. But for those fearing Armageddon, don't be alarmed -- the chances of a catastrophic collision are just one in 909,000.
I think ANY chance at all of a catastrophic collision is due to cause panic in the masses...
So what do yall think...?
The End is near...
...
Nah not really... I hope...

Hmm that will be sad everybody will be singing living on a jet plane and the govt will search suicidal oil digging bombers to blow up the meteor....

May 13, 2005: Friday the 13th is supposed to be an unlucky day, the sort of day you trip on your shoe laces or lose your wallet or get bad news. But maybe it's not so bad. Consider this: On April 13th--Friday the 13th--2029, millions of people are going to go outside, look up and marvel at their good luck. A point of light will be gliding across the sky, faster than many satellites, brighter than most stars.
What's so lucky about that? It's asteroid 2004 MN4 ... not hitting Earth.
Lol God hates earth...

I know this is most likely not gonna happen but just seriously thinking about it, if an asteroid would be on a collision course with earth, are we actually capable of dealing with such a thing at present? Seriously.
Wont it be a good idea to have nukes ready to be fired from space? Its better to be ready than sorry. I know it can also be taken as they can be set to fire on any nation too but... if we can package the proposal right maybe we and our allies can get exclusive rights to this

There's the idea that we could create an enormous ship and use its gravity to change the course of the asteroid a bit. But we would have to know about the asteroid many years (like over a decade) beforehand.

Wont most of them get reduced to pebbles or sand when they enter the earth's atmosphere and reach the surface? Or if they are big enough, they can be intercepted by anti-ballistic missiles. Atleast its a fighting chance than total annihilation
as for the enormous ship, ive never heard of that before, maybe Ill look into it
seems a 30foot fragment can cause an explosion as strong as a nuke
This is for atom bombs and from the 1950s

If these things are really happening, then we better live our life to the fullest from now on...
But I'd say that these types of events are not as easy to predict, who knows that some other asteroid collide with the one that is headed towards earth, changing its direction so that it does not hit earth~

If we tried to defend ourselves from that infernal thing.... chances are:
PROBABLE MEASURES (for me)
NUCLEAR MISSILE
-no more asteroid, but like in Modern Warfare 2 EMP will knock out the ISS and any nearby satellite, thereby causing problems in comms and other shit....
-blast makes the asteroid into numerous smaller ones....
BOOSTER ROCKETS (hypothetical)
-could successfully push the rogue asteroid aside and blow it up somewhere safe
-rockets go out of control and shit happens....
UNUSUAL MEASURES
RAILGUN/MASS DRIVER (i dunno if it exists)
-destroy it by shooting a very small asteroid in a very supercharged railgun
LASER DEFENSE ARRAY (we dont know that yet)
-sci fi be real! eradicates the asteroid by supercharged lasers
