Armed Robots in IRAQ !
0

Robots have been roaming the streets of Iraq, since shortly after the war began. Now, for the first time -- the first time in any warzone -- the machines are carrying guns.
Minsc wonders, what does this tell us of the future?
Will the average soldier be trained to control a video-game like robot? And fight for his/her country from home?

I don't think this will be economically feasible to be used on any grand scale anytime soon. Interesting though, good find.

These would most likely be used in very hostile areas where a squad could get ambushed and surrounded. Though they would easily be destroyed if you know how to.
Police forces use them in hostage situations (unarmed of course) and Both Military and Police use them in ordnance disposal but these would be used in more lethal mode in house to house fighting to minimize casualties.
They did prove a good point by being able to zoom in a greater distances, and used in certain situations that could endanger more than one soldier. They could also be used in intelligence gathering and reconnaissance. something has to be done about that noise though. WIIIIR WIIIIIR WIIIIR can be heard from a distance when its quiet, say a night op. they're still in the testing phase. I like the anti-tank ones, they could be useful and the fear factor of not being able to know what to shoot or how to stop it is great. much less loss of coherence when in the vicinity of an explosion, so one can't get kidnapped. Silencers can be placed on them for more covert operations.
This would be a great addition to the armed forces but I don't see the average soldier being obsolete any time soon.

I can't say it would be a good thing, but it would be interesting. It reminds me of the ps2 game Ring of Red. I'm not going to post the actual intro here since it is the serious discussion thread, but a link should be fine I think. Its giant robos spliced into WWII footage.

The only problem is if they're connected to a remote server for instructions, with the right knowledge an enemy could be able to intercept the transmissions and turn them on us. Codes and encryption only work so far.

Ehh, I think the problem of enemies taking control is pretty limited. It all depends what kind of enemies you're dealing with. I don't think it would be an issue in most wars. Things like security and other technical issues can all be improved anyway, I think the real problem is cost. It's a lot cheaper to outfit a soldier with some body armor, a gun, whatever else.

Minsc thinks an average soldier can be very expensive.
Examples: Training-food-housing-wages-gear-so forth.
If done right, it's possible that robots could be cheaper to mass produce than a human.
Here is a scary thought: What if terrorists start using this technology? Send in a robot to do their work, and makes for an easy escape.
Or what about mastermind criminals? Imagine if a robot was programmed specifically for bank robberies. It could be designed to look like a baby stroller.
This technology could save lives, but also take them too.

But keep in mind the amount of training, wages, etc required for people to operate and maintain such robots. I've worked for a company that made automated robots(I won't specify the uses of them for legal/professional reasons). I can tell you such things are very expensive to make and maintain. The training to use them is also rather time consuming and pricey.

According to the Congressional Research Service, one US soldier costs $390000 per year

Robot soldier costs 200,000k per unit. (Not yearly)

Of course, you need a soldier to control the robot.
But one robot means less soldiers, and less casualties.

In the future we'll be having RC wars, this can be devastating if an army of these is in the wrong hands since they don't seem to have any weak points (btw only saw a snippet of the vid). Also heard that some battle soldier suit is being researched and invented in a few years or so for soldiers to aid them in combat and protection, so basically they"ll withstand dozens of bullets.

Battle soldier suit? Sounds very promising.

battle soldier suite mayb fine but it may later turn them into terrorist themselve or if the enemy copied the same technology then it only lvl up the danger only....

Very very good point! How could normal cops deal with an enemy that has such a battle soldier suit? Minsc thinks that, if even ONE suit got stolen from the military, we would see a chain of crime sprees.

furthuremore if the idea of the battle soldier suite really initiated, then in the end is the victims of war will suffer cuz the battle suite is gonna get upgraded from time to time just to get better than the opponent and gradually lethal enough to change one's mind to change it into own's uses.

it never ends, like a deadly spiral of infinite deaths never able to protect anything, instead destroying everything (which is also something i shoulnd't hv if not ......)

For some reason, Gundam is popping up in my head... Battle Soldier Suits sound like Mobile Suits and the US will probably create one that is the 'Gundam' of Battle Soldier Suits.

it's called "Dragonskin" it's ceramic based. my father works at a military base in panama city, florida and they had this out there. was kinda interesting. some soldiers have been hit and not even realised it until they took the DS plate out of their vest.
my whole look on automated robots doing our battles is really..why get into a war in the first place if something is just going to do it for us..?
the whole thing behind the enemy intercepting our comm. lines between the robots isn't really something to worry about, most of it is sattelite done and a lot of the robots are preprogrammed, so theres not really much communication with them in the first place.
