California voters approve Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriages
I been following this story very closely the entire time and I gotta say I'm greatly disappointed with those results (and that's an understatement).
You know, I feel sick when I take a look at those results. I can't believe a country that just elected a black president for the first time, continues to do crap like this. Two step forwards, one step back.
Okay, seriously, how the hell does same-sex marriages destroy the integrity of a family? I still haven't gotten a clear answer. All I hear or read is that it goes against their religious values, which is wrong in the first place because this is a civil issue and not a religious one. Also, what the hell is traditional marriage? That definition has changed so much in the last few years it difficult to find a right answer these days.
The thing that infuriates me the most is that people's rights are being decided by popular opinion. What the hell? Are they voting for health rights next?

I live in Canada and I'm pretty sure none of that stuff has happened yet. Hell, I don't think it will ever happen.

I haven't been following the Proposition 8 story very closely myself, but I am opposed to it. Any couple of legal age is entitled to a marriage if they desire it. Heterosexual or homosexual, it is a human right.
@Azuran: I'm not sure if this has anything to do with what was being said about same sex marriage destroying the integrity of a family, but it can put a great deal of stress on the children of such a couple. I have a nephew who is being raised by a lesbian couple. Not having a father in his and being raised by a lesbian couple has had a negative impact on his life, and I can see it for myself whenever he visits. Even though I am not against same sex marriage, I don't think that a child should be subjected being raised by such a couple. The actions of a parent have a great deal of influence on a child.

Gay's can't donate blood either. Which imo is rediculous - I can sleep with just as many guys as a gay guy can and still get aids... yet it's okay since I have a vagina.
Guess it's just gonna take some more time

I think that's left over from the days when people thought gays emited aids like radiation. No reason they shouldn't give blood that is tested the same as everyone else.
No reason also that they shouldn't be able to get married.
I don't even want to get married, but being heterosexual, I can get married, anuled, and married again in the next 48 hours.
Real damn sacred, mariage is.

The actions of a parent have a great deal of influence on a child. The problem with that is, if you ban gay couples raising children, then you have to ban single parents raising children. It's the same situation, a child is missing one of the two roles models, except that potentially, a single parent may find the other half of the equation and give the child a full family. But that doesn't mean that the single parent will find a partner before, um, "the damage is done."
I don't think about that stuff too much though. It's hard enough to make it okay for gay couples to get married; worrying about letting them raise children seems like worrying about the zombie in your driveway when you haven't taken care of the zombie in your room.

I'm surprised as well, thought it didn't even have a chance to pass....but it did.

Just when it seems the world makes a little progress, somehow we trip that magic time machine and go back 50 years.

Going to be quite a quandary where we are faced by problems with clearly conflicting views, as we generally can't just have one general consensus, but it is just from personal belief how gays can't donate blood is just outdatedly outrageous, the negative connotation associated with homosexuals will continue ringing throughout peoples' heads until we are actually able to come down to a wider-range of open-mindedness, which is in short supply nowadays anyways, so as long as people aren't willing to change, they aren't willing to accept it, it's such a shame because I really feel that anyone should not have a say about anything before having some experience firsthand about what they're talking about...

for one I'm glad I don't live in California.... though Pennsylvania isn't too better off.
anyway, I hope that our new president elect will change the restrictions on gay marriage.
I'm Bisexual, so this hits home to me in a real hard way... sure I'm dating the best woman in the world, but things can change (not like I want it to >.> ). anyway, all bisexual means is I view men and women in the same light, both can be equally attractive, or not in the case of my small and very racist corner of Pennsylvania, where the majority of the women go MOO! and I'm not talking about cows

I'm not oppposed to same sex marriage at all. There are bisexuals too. Women can be equally attrative as men. Oh and by the way, missing a father or a mother isn't the main issue for a child raised by lesbians or gays - because there are single parents - it's the prejudice he/she'll get from his fellow classmates and the stigma that comes with it. In the worst case scenario, he/she'll blame his parents and get a really bad relationship with them and have a harsh life with few close ones.

I'm rather disappointed that the ban is in effect.
There are studies out that show the difference between a single parent household vs a household with a gay couple. This is like comparing apples to oranges. The only common factor is that both are fruit (a.k.a the child is missing a significant factor).
I think more studies on the development of children need to be done before any real conclusion can be made that a household with a gay couple is any different than any other households. The studies could also come across methods to raise children in any household that could negatively affect the development of a child.

If a kid doesn't get all the newest clothes, or doesn't get brand name food for his lunch, or doesn't have cable and can't talk about the cool shows the other kids are watching, he'll be picked on and tormented at school. That could also cause him to blame his parents for not making enough money and get a really bad relationship with them and have a harsh life with few close ones.
Same goes for a family with different religious beliefs, different ethnic background, different way of living, and all sorts of things. The lesson here? Kids will always pick on other kids. (There's another lesson, but everyone can figure that out for themselves.)
