Censorship and its affect on children and young people
0
So i was watching Supernatural today, and there was a scene involving brain dissection. It then occurred to me that violent scenes like this can be shown on tv at a certain time, but no matter what time a show is shown on tv tits are a no-no for the children. Now, i'm not saying we should allow everything and anything on tv, but when such violent images can be shown while a bare tit remains forbidden i think there is a problem there.
Does anyone else think that way censorship works on tv is out of whack?
EDIT- Scope of question has been expanded. See my next post

M tired but anyway, wasnt the idea to let the children find out about these things for themselves when they are ready so they wont be caught off-guard and/or confused? maybe more like the parents getting caught off-guard in explaining...
I think it was discussed on another thread that children here are treated like retards, it seems. As for why the brain thing is ok, I guess it qualifies as something scientific... free anatomy lessons? Then again aint breasts just the same. Just being silly, I guess seeing the dissection makes em want to be doctors and breasts make em want to have sex hoohohhohhoohoh
Seriuosly, the root of the problem is that nowadyas both parents need to work and they barely have any time for the kids. Instead of accepting and/or blaming themselves for the lack of proper parenting its easier and more comforting to pressure anything else but themsleves like movies, video games, TV even music or whatver they can think of... even the school i mean geez huh.

Well if I was a kid and saw brain tissue or a gore movie I'd be pretty traumatized. That's whats the producers are thinking,as for the boobs, well a side shot is fine but the nipples is still a no no.

Im reminded what a comedian once said abot Kill Bill.
"I watched Kill Bill the other day...one of the greatest movies ever made. The only problem was that it was on cable, so all the dirty words were cut out. Because as we all know, Uma Thurman cutting to pieces a hundred guys with a katana and chopping off the top of Lucy Liu's head to reveal her brain is ok, but if a kid hear's a swear word he's going to go completely insane and kill everyone in his school."

Best censorship available is definately when they censor people's mouths when forming the word "fuck", probably so our kids won't learn the correct lip formation... :3

Yes.
Can't think of more to say.

It's pretty simple: In America, violence is A-OK, but sex is bad.
It's not just TV either. Pretty much every medium has this problem in the US. A movie can be up for review for a rating and get a big, fat NC-17 due to a sex scene, but if there's a ton of violence, there's usually no problem. That's why you'll see a ton of Saw-esque movies but never see a serious gay drama. (Part of why, that is. Lot of other reasons, too.)

One of my professers had an interesting thesis on censorship.
The main point was that if we just took away the censorship, the word/object loses it's apeal. If the word fuck wasn't seen as an explotive, it just becomes another word.

I'll propose a theory that just came to mind while reading the previous posts.
Authoritarian people found certain things objectionable (Old school religious people). I'd say the nature of the United States as a Christian heavy nation created an environment where nudity was objectionable but, not violence. This line of thought has continued to today with the excuse that exposing children or teens to breasts will somehow cause them to go violent or become sexually deviants. As if a 12yr old boy seeing bouncing breasts will turn him into a rapist.
I dislike the idea of censorship at all. If parents want to keep their kids away from material they find objectionable then buy a v-chip or use another method to monitor what their child is watching. There is a myriad of ways to choose what your child can see. It's a parents job to parent their children, not the government.

I have decided to expand the topic to the topic of censorship as a whole. With that expanded focus in mind, i ask fakku a broader question. Is the amount of sex and or violence in the media really as bad as it is portrayed top be? And do you believe that censorship helps children like it claims to?
The reason i ask is because to me foreign films seem to have more sex and violence in them than in American films. Yet it seems children and young people in America are the ones having trouble if the high homicide and teen pregnancy rates are any indication.
I personally believe that the problem is America is that young people are not sperating reality from fiction, for whatever reason. I mean, i see kids all the time wanting to be "Gangstas" because of most mainstream rappers, and i wonder do they actually realize what that entails?
I personally believe that fpods solution of parents doing the censoring themselves with products like V chip would be much more effective than leaving it to the government. My dad let me watch pretty much anything(including R rated and Pg-13 movies), but on the condition that i would watch it with him(obviously now that i'm older he is comfortable with me seeing r rated movies by without him). This is so he would be there to talk to me about anything i saw.
I have grown up with a understanding of the difference between fiction and reality, and i usually enjoy watching movies with my dad anyways.

The way I see it, Violence is an okay. Reason being; we hear about it everyday on the news. We'll hear about it from friends or just gossip traveling around. Anything sexual is bad. You rarely hear it on the news, except it being a bad thing, such as rape or some weird crap like that. Sexual activities remain in the dark and a private thoughts of the people involved. So why show it on tv? Violence is an every day occurrence. Why try in hide it? Lets just increase the volume of violence!
Though you still have those shows that have sexual explicit content: such as Nip/Tuck, Dirt, and others.
I still think that sexually deprived children (as in children who don't learn about sex at a younger age) will grow up wanting sex more because they were deprived of that knowledge early in life. It may not make sense, but it does to me.

Being exposed to violent material has nothing to do with it.
As far as I see it, Americans are the most self-righteous, pigheaded lot of humans I've ever met. You're always sure that you're right, you always loudly demand your "rights", and never for a moment even consider calmly if you could be in the wrong.
When the later *does* happen you beg forgiveness and try to laugh if off (cheap grace). However what's even worse is that a lot of you finds being affirmed - that the other guy was wrong and you're right - a permission to go all out in abuse and make the other guys life a living hell.
Finally you have a great degree of ingrained fear, and baseless fearfulness in the lot of you, so you jump at any stimulation and bark and bite like a small over-bred cocker spaniel where everything is big and loud and terrifies him to his bones.
So let me sum it up: hypocrisy (loud and vehement punishment of wrongdoers, didactic self assurance that one is always in the right), ingrained fear.

Flaser, this isn't the "do you hate america thread?". You made no comment about the topic at hand. Try to actually talk about the topic at hand rather than ranting.
Just in case you try to claim hypocrisy on my part I've already stated my opinion previously.
Edit: America is not the only country with a bunch of elitist pricks. Every country has them. You pointed out a behavioral trait of a sect of people and claimed that they represent Americans as a whole. Very flawed logic, I had higher expectations of you.
Yes,but some parents want to government to do something as well.Besides depends on the country and what they consider morale and immorale.
They have a right to express that desire but, they are not entitled to use the power of government to dictate what I can and can't see on t.v (along with millions of other Americans) because they find something objectionable. If everybody was allowed to use the powers of government to censor everything they find objectionable we wouldn't be allowed to say anything.
T.V. stations are companies and by using a recent supreme court ruling on campaign spending in political elections. Companies are granted the right to free speech just like the rest of us. What the channel decides to air is their speech and it's a violation of their rights to censor it.

Why parents don't want their children knowing what a breast or a swear word is is beyond me. They're going to find out one way or another that sex and bad words exist. I don't know if it's just me and the rest of the population of Las Vegas that know this, but breasts are attached to over half the population of the world. There's no escaping that. Maybe the parents are just unsure on how to tell their children about these things, despite sex being the reason the child's there, and so they figure if they don't let them know anything about sex, they won't ask. Then again, I think these are the same parents who decided playgrounds should be made of nerf.
If these parents truly had their way, I think we'd all be pansy-ass sex fearers.

I agree with you entirely.
Yes, the censorship rules for the media are out of whack, but thats only because of people like overprotecive mothers protesting what their children should see. I remember when i was younger my mother wouldnt buy me God of War because it was rated M. She also wouldnt allow me to watch South Park for a LONG time. This topic bothers me personally because i feel like i missed out on a lot as a kid because of these rules. If children shouldnt be "exposed" to stuff like God of War, then why did I want it so badly when i saw the commercial?
I can understand that parents do have an extent of responsibility for what their children do and see, but if the kids feel their old enough for something like that then let them have it.
And dont even get me started on nudity! HOW can seeing boobs as a kid be harmful in any way?! I mean damn, most kids are breastfed anyway. Its entirely natural to see the naked body, so why is it forbidden for kids to see? Plus, i think that abstinence would be a lot easier to maintain in a society where kids were allowed to view nudity. Teens put sex on some pedestal that they need to get to because its forbidden as a kid!
Thats my opinion on censorship, im pretty much entirely against it. But there should be some limits.
