Did you really grow up to be a ___?
0
Remember when you were a kid, and adults would ask you:
'What do you want to be when you grow up?'
I wish I just said 'A dinosaur!' and they'd stop asking that question.
But no, it was 'I wanna be a vet!'
Then after a run-in with the X-Files: 'I wanna be a FBI agent!'
After finding I'm awesome at art: 'I wanna be an artist!'
After starting college: 'I don't know what I wanna be..'
I've taken a smorgasboard of classes, but nothing seems to hit me like, "Wow I really wanna consider this as a career!"
Not to mention the parents breathing down my neck: 'You're all grown up, how come you're not __?' Ffffffff.
Am I that damned oddball? Have any of you collegefolk or gradfolk had this experience? Should I just get an Associate's in General Studies and try my luck at a university?

I wanted to be a scientist until middle school, when I found out what a mechanical engineer is.
Ever since then, that's been my goal and I'm still workin' on it.

Its funny, when I was little I wanted to make robots, but obviously without any real concept of what that entailed.
In high school my interests shifted and became more realistic I suppose, and I ended up taking a lot of computer/computer science classes. I started college as a computer science major as well, but decided to switch to computer engineering during my sophomore year because I didn't feel like comp sci majors really get the credit they are due in industry.
Now, in my senior year, I'm getting into robotics as part of my senior design projects and having a lot of fun with it. Odd how things turn out...

ohh trust me makami.. it took me years to find out what i wanted in life..
so follow this formula for a while and se how it pans out..
you need a few common things in life:
cash, a home and a partner/family
now.. think of your intrests.. can any of them be made into a career with a few years of study/training at maybe a technical college or something? ( dunno if you have those in your area.. but yeah) if so pursue it.. you'll do well and be more motivated in a job/endevour you enjoy..
if you think that it cant be done.. then look for the next best thing.. a job you wont mind doing.. and work towards that.. stay at it for a while.. save up your cash and maybe do part time study /night classes to get where you really want to be..
also keep a look out for trends... if you see jobs looking to come in a certain sector like retail or maybe mining.. and you'd like that.. get the skills for it.. even if by that time you dont like it anymore.. if you have the skills when demand hits.. employers will wants you bad.. you can always join and then quit later..
either way.. early on..career is a means to a healthy bank balance and getting where you want to be.. after you have that.. you'll be more mature about life and have the means to do the things you really want..
thats how i take it :D
hope it helps!

When I was little, I wanted to be a zoologist, not just a vet. I didn't even know what zoologist exactly meant at that age, I just saw it on animal planet one day and knew they made good money.
Middle school/high school I wanted to be an electrician, though I'm not sure why I wanted to. I think I just liked dealing with the wires and fiddling around with things.
Now I want to be a chiropractor and going to school for that. I get to work with people, and work in the medical field without doing surgery.

you know, my first year of college I was the same way.
Although, I grew up wanting to be one thing, and one thing only. Which, by my luck was the one thing I probably could never have.
Anhow, come college, I only knew that whatever I did, it was going to deal with traveling and something I love/am interested, which is of the four, History, Justice, Government/politics (I really wanted to change things from the inside out), and teaching.
Always have been good at teaching others, and I'm jesus with kids. Pshycology and Medical school, though I'm good at both, never really interested me.
Veterinary work was another story, but that only stemmed from my love of animals and nature.
Thus, I decided on Language and culture, with Government business thrown in. *Gotta love benefits.

It's funny, because even the things I want to be and could be, just aren't hiring.
Fucking economy. -3-'

For me it was always a mix of writing and telling my own stories or becoming an artist and drawing my own stories.
I use to stick mainly with drawing, I drew a lot and was mainly all I did at school. But in recent years it's something I rarely do, I'm not as good as I like to be and I realized I have very little passion for it these days.
However writing still does heavily interest me and I'm looking into getting into the fields of journalism or becoming an author, well perhaps both. Just gotta see where things take me.

Yeah, but the problem I've found is there are no open entry-level spots to even DEVELOP such skills in. Fuck this, maybe I should just work at Hooters.

Any entry-level job experience is good. I'm majoring in art history but even a part time office job or retail or food service would be good on my resume. Plus I need the cash for school.
And I totally agree with you there on the immorality of that place... but they're starting to look like the only place hiring.

Hmm have you ever worked before?? Or just studied for ages?
I can tell you it gets harder with age. I made the mistake of starting my first job when I was 17-18.
So yeah crap retail job I guess the only thing you can do atm. is to up skill/prove to employers that you are better than the rest of the kids they hire.
Like here in my area, they take kids that are 14-16 because then they can pay them less and whatnot... the older ones get "encouraged" to leave via lack of shifts and all that..
I overcame that problem by convincing them and future employers that my experience and maturity offered better customer service and I offered to work for the same amount of pay.
Better that then no job
What you can also do is graduate recruitment... like how govt depts. or major companies take uni grads and offer them temp jobs or internships. That kind of thing can work even if you never had a job before...
Although it depends on skills and how you come across in the interview...
Is there any income support/job seeking help in your side of town?

I wanted to be a doctor.
So, in high school I studied hard so that I can apply for the best college. In college I studied hard to pass the best med school. Med school I dropped my social life entirely.
After I graduated from med school and got accepted to one of the bet hospitals in the country I realized I was fucking UNHAPPY. We're not talking a bit down here. I'm talking FUCKING JESUS CHRIST was I depressed. And I had been depressed for years but just didn't let it get in the way because I was so busy studying. When I decided I didn't want to be a doctor anymore it felt like a spear had been pulled out of my heart. Not even the promise of money could get me back to being a doctor. I was so down I literally stopped caring for other people, and, for a doctor, that's terrible. During my last rotation nearly all of my patients died (they were dying anyway; terminal cancer, shot in the head, that sort of thing) and I just didn't care if they did. I cared more about the paperwork involved. I wanted to be a doctor to help people in the first place, and then I found myself not giving two shits about people. I just had to stop.
So now, I'm a neet. There are other reason for me being a neet (such as my failing health), but even if I could, I wouldn't go back to that life. Just thinking about it makes me want to jump off a cliff or something. For a while, I broke my mother's heart, but these days I think she's forgiven me.

At first i want to be a pilot, sure that was just a typical kiddies wannabe because it looks cool to working on airplane
Time to time,
at high school ,
I know computer, i play .. i love .. IT consultant wannabe ..
On college, my thinking goes too serious ..
so much lame tv show with a great way to imply that they do plagiarism with bad quality ..
i am raged , selling my tv with a good ol cheapskate price .. deciding that i have to be animator ... to change my country image and for my personal satisfaction ...
i really need to and i am still trying (still in college)
