GOOD OL' DAYS
Are the good days gone?

I think we will go through special decades too. The '90s is often considered the true dawn of the Information Age. It wasn't until the late 1980s and the 1990s that info-age technologies became widely used by the general public. The mass mobilization of capital markets through neoliberalism, the beginning of the widespread proliferation of new media such as the Internet, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union led to a realignment and reconsolidation of economic and political power across the world, and within countries. The 1990s is often considered the end of Modernity and the dawn of the current Postmodern age. I think that in the future we will tell our children and grandchildren of the dawn of Globalization, the Internet, the birth of smart phones, the War on Terror, the revolutions in the middle east, and the global financial crisis. So much has happened since we were born; imagine what will happen in the future! As lousy as things are now, tomorrow they will be somebody’s good old days. In every age “the good old days” were a myth. No one ever thought they were good at the time. For every age has consisted of crises that seemed intolerable to the people who lived through them.

I'd say yes. Laziness reigns and stupidity is spreading more and faster than fear of the commies. Hard work is almost a dead art these days, in some aspects.

The Present is always "worse" than the past because we can skip over the bad parts in the past and only focus on things we want to remember, but are forced to take in reality with all it's complications and problems while we live it in the present. Let's just name three shitty things about the immediate past:>Advent of the drug culture
>Racism and general intolerance
>No internet
But no, they were great I'm sure. To anybody with a scientific mindset, these times are orders of magnitude greater than past eras. Our age is called the goddam INFORMATION AGE. We are slowly creeping forward as a species both scientifically and culturally, and looking to the past for the "Good Ol' Days" seems foolish and maudlin. Does every age have it's Pros and Cons? Of course. It would be a ridiculous over-dramatization though to take this and turn it into "This past age was perfect and we'll never experience such greatness!"
TL;DR You people only think this way about the past because you are nostalgic or simply too blind to see how fantastic the world of the present is.
Nonsense, we are indeed living in the information age. However, I am certainly not nostalgic of those times, simply in awe of the great social upheaval during those eras and to see what we're experiencing these days? It isn't as interesting. Yes, information is getting easier to access. Processor speeds have gone through the roof and continue to do so, but that is unfortunately on the sidelines, and we are currently creating the groundwork for the future technologies of the world, we are not yet reaping them and I'm certain we won't. And please, this internet? It will be a joke.

@Del, Oh yeah, because there is no social upheaval anywhere these days. (<==sarcasm) Have you seen any news in the last year? And I wasn't talking about processor speeds, although those are interesting as well, I was talking about stuff like the LHC, going to Mars, and other such things. We are not just "laying the groundwork" for future technologies, we are reaping the benefits as they come.
Also, you must be the most uneducated person I've ever met if you think the internet will be a joke. Even if something bigger and better comes along down the road, the internet will always be the thing that started it all. It opened up access to information in a way the world had never seen, and has become the single most significant technological achievement of our time.
Basically, stop complaining about how "uninteresting" these times are for you, because you are not really speaking of a problem with the times, but rather a problem with your inability to perceive wonder in this time, and thus a flaw within yourself.

It will be a joke in comparison to the future internet, Grover. That is all I meant. I see wonder all around me though. In the way we're communicating now, for instance, or that about ten years ago, the closest shit we had to streaming video were those wretched Quicktime/Windows Media/Real Time plugins for websites, or that processor speeds were a fraction of what they are now when you go another 10 years back beyond that. It's all absolutely beautiful, but it is just a footnote. We're never gonna have our moment on the moon.

/Still not getting the point of what I was saying.
lolkay, because the "moment on the moon" was a triumph for the human race, and not at all an excuse by the US government to get the support of the people as it developed the rockets necessary for ICBMs and the potential for thermonuclear war. It WAS a technological triumph, but it WASN'T a wonderful moment for mankind.

While both past and present have their pros and cons, I do prefer the past for a few reasons;
- Simpler times. What with the advent of technology, the past era has seen an exponential increase in "more"; More information reaching more people with more money to buy more things and get more stuff and faster, more time-saving equipment to save more time to do more stuff.
There is an attitude that excess equals success, and quite frankly- I am not a fan of the fast and frenetic pace life has picked up, with an ever-present sense of urgency.
- Manners. Whatever happened to saying "hello" to people you pass on the streets, with an equally cordial and amicable greeting in return? What happened to young people helping old people crossing the streets, or helping them carry their bags? What happened to respected authority figures, who regular people were able to have a nice chat with?
Of course there were rude people back then- but it would seem that it has become the default setting whenever one goes out in public, with common decency reserved only for those close to them- and even then, it's rare to see a guy pull up a chair for a girl.
- Apathy. With the onslaught of information permeating the Information Age- everyone is desensitized and jaded, which is why only bad news makes headlines- in a vain effort to grab the customers' attention with sensationalism. For anything to get a second glance, it has to be gory and graphic to extreme levels- and even then it can be met with naught but mirth and derision. (There's also a bit of a "think of the children!" aspect to this).
- Popular culture. This has been a long time coming, and is also a loaded subject that can spark endless squabble- but I'm talking about the hypersexualization of our culture (with an emphasis upon women).
Now- I'll try to keep this one short and to the point.
If a woman in- let's say- Uganda has sex with five guys and swallows all their jizz- it's usually rape.
If a woman in- let's say- Vegas has sex with five guys and swallows all their jizz- she's probably at a party.
The women in all sorts of media- movies, television, music, porn- they're all fit, trim, curvy, big tits, big ass, big hair, kissy lips, smooth skin, etc.
Essentially- we don't want them to age past 30. Tops.
There's something about this that just don't sit right with me- and I'm (a bit) of a misogynist (my ideal woman is close to the French Maid archtype; stay at home, do the housework, sex, etc).
There's probably more that I'm forgetting, but they're likely just small, personal preferences.

The past was definitely a lot more simpler. Things just keep getting more and more complicated each decade and sooner or later we'll be the ones complaining about how things are so difficult when we reach a certain age.
You know sometimes I feel that I was born at the wrong time period.

I feel out of place too, but I cannot determine whether or not I would be better off in the far future, or centuries ago. Probably the latter.

What are we basing "good" on? Every generation has it's own crisis and will eventually overcome it or pass it on to those to come. At the same time, with advances in multiple fields of study, new innovations can make our lives easier. However, many of these innovations can often have a some-what unseen consequence. This seems to (me at least) be how it usually happens. So I'm confused on what grounds you use to judge one time period with another on how good it is.

Nope not for me, cause to me everyday is a good day. It just turns bad through certain events that happen on it.

Our cultural experiences now are much more short lived.
Even fads come and go very quickly.
Because of the globalization and electronic connection to almost anywhere in the world, culture is so much a mishmash of all places that it takes very little time to spread, and little time to die out.

ah, those old days, when the world feared communism and everybody was a hippy, I wish I lived in that time.
Well I can't really vouch for everyone but, to me the good days are over, we are slowly losing our cultural heritage and ethics, I mean come on, we've got pregnant teenage mothers, 16 year olds who are part of street gangs and old pedophiles and child abductors(I am only talking about my country, I don't know anything about anyone else's). I honestly think we're going down a deep, dark hole of sh*t.

I miss the days when people feared for their life of an impending nuclear attack from Communists. Now we live in fear of an impending nuclear attack from terrorists and Koreans (wait... Oh crap).
Boy have the times changed or what?
I don't think the good old days are really gone per say. Life just kinda piled more shit for us to carry so we can't enjoy ourselves as much as we use to. That and we forget about the tear gas.
EDIT: Upon thinking I realized that life isn't the same without this guy
In all seriousness, it's really what you make of it. I personally think the good ol' days are still here, just kinda deteriorating.
