Guns lead to more or less crime? your opinion.
Proliferation of guns in our society leading to an increase in crime?

Sorry, I fu**cked up on the poll when posting it if you can tell me how to fix it that would make me happy, its supposed to say.
1. I think more guns leads to more crime.
2. I think more guns leads to less crime.
3. Bows are for pussies.
4. I dont give a damn as long as i am safe.
Personally I am a gun owner, but not like most.
What I believe is that guns both increase and decrease crime depending on what area they are most prevalent in and depending on what the people in that area are like.
What is your opinion, please though supply a reason why you believe what you believe.

I know it only has one, if any one can tell me how to change that I would be happy.Hit the "edit" button. It's in the upper right hand corner, right below the date and time. Though I'm not sure if you can edit a poll ounce it's been made.

I hit that up there near the date and time but it doesn't seem to give me the option to change the poll.

I'm for gun ownership, but I'm also for gun control.
Guns don't kill people, it's the ones pulling the trigger who do it. Yes, the gun enables the killing and makes it a lot easier to kill than if you had to do it with your bare hands.
However it's often vastly overestimated how "easy" it is to kill. It's not. To be able to pull the trigger takes enormous changes in the psyche:
Rather than focus on the singular issue of gun ownership, if we're to combat modern violence we should focus on what the myriad things are that enable us to kill either in cold blood or in rage.
I'm afraid that video games are one of these, as just like modern combat training it enables one to overcome our natural tendency to avoid doing harm to thing that look human.... however it can't be enough. I've played these for several hundreds of hours (maybe thousands over the years), but I'd probably still find it hard to kill someone.
The "gun ban" freaks are on a wrong footing, they thing magically: if we take out the gun from the hands of people they won't kill... that's stupid.
IMHO we should use the fact that people want to be armed.
Just as with an auto mobile, we should make people accept that carrying a firearm goes with a special responsibility. I find it idiotic, that people demand to own a gun as a born right. Yes, I believe everyone should have a chance to acquire that right, however not without training.
If one were to demand that they should be able to drive a car without any training whatsoever we'd think him mad: he'd be a menace on the road and would likely end up killing someone...
...and we don't want to handle object created with the express purpose to enable one to kill with the same respect? Utter madness.
A part of the training should be (beyond gun safety) a rigorous training of *when* one can use their gun. I find it bad, that most of this training views current self defense laws as something to get around - so you can shoot and kill the bastard! - rather than something that protects us, from becoming killers ourselves.
Yes, there are times when it's obvious that it's kill or be killed or kill and someone else (undeserving) get killed... however the ready willingness of Americans to use lethal force creates an ever wilder and nastier circle of violence. Since perps are also well aware of this mindset they're also perfectly willing to kill.
I don't know how the USA could break out of this cycle. Sometimes if one allowed a perp to get away, if it wasn't a life or death struggle, but a merely a question of getting caught versus getting away than the perps themselves wouldn't feel pressured to kill. Yeah, even a violent criminal isn't readily willing to kill. You heard right: the overwhelming majority of criminals is no different than you when it comes to killing.

It isn't the guns, it's the people. I don't support average citizens owning guns, and I only support the NRA in terms of its objectives, not how it is practiced. However, I'm not so foolish as to think "people don't kill people, guns kill people!"
I don't believe the availability of guns leads to any direct correlation on the rate of crime. That said, it should at least be much more difficult to obtain a license to carry weapons in the United States. I'd go as far to say you should have to pay to take courses in gun safety and even training exercises, but the cost of that would be way too much to make that feasible at the current time.

I agree with "Flaser" on this, people are responsible for the deaths of other people and removing guns will do little to stop that, I dont even think making guns illegal would stop people from buying guns.
I live in California and here AK47's are illegal under certain circumstances, yet huge amounts of people near me own them. Even though i live in a small county illegal guns sales are at a high in our drug community, funny enough we don't have many shootings though.
As a gun owner living in the united states I feel that any one "who is mentally fit" should be able to own a gun.
That being said criminals are just people, therefore if you give guns to every one someone will shoot someone.
Now I don't know if we should go as far as to charge people money for a licence to own a firearm, a firearm is dangerous but that is exactly the point of the firearm itself. We want guns to be in the hands of the right people at the right times, that way average everyday citizens both stop crimes committed against them and serve as an example for criminals.
Now Im not saying guns reduce crime considering the average person may draw a gun but the chances of the actually firing it are darn near nil. In many situations drawing a firearm on a criminal may cause them to shoot you, that is if you don't get off the first shot.

but I am all for them to be carried around I don't care for them myself seeing as they are disrespectful when fighting one on one but I don't think guns lead to crime it's the people who use these guns that commit crime.
hence the phrase.
guns don't kill people my cousin does. some humor but thats how I see it.

I'm more of: Go ahead and regulate guns, but don't completely take away the average citizen's defense against the criminals who can easily obtain one themselves; regardless if measures are taken or not. The United States was created from the barrel of a firearm, to ban guns altogether would cripple the country as to losing an arm or a leg. Guns don't kill people, the one(s) behind the barrel do.

Guns lead to more violence to me especially when it's in the wrong hands. Then again it also has benefits when effective to kill when necessary. But overall i feel like it's been used for more negative reasons than positive.

Just possessing a gun is a big detterent against any threat against you.
However I feel that the US citizens don't realize what *is* and *isn't* self-defense. If you get a gun, you should do that to protect yourself.
When attacked, run away! Yes, run like hell! If you can't run without getting shot at,take cover, take out your gun, and loudly proclaim that you're armed and ready to defend yourself! Next, with your opponent contemplating this, see if you can leave. You should leave and run anyway if you can! Fuck the stolen goods! Fuck all the bullshit about what's manly/brave thing to do! Get the hell out of there.
The police can chase the perp, it's why they get paid the big bucks. Only use your gun if you can't run away and the perp won't leave you be. Tell the perp that the two of you should go your separate ways. Don't lecture him or make demands... especially while waving a gun in his face. Just state that you have a gun, and if he attacks you will defend yourself. Now back away and leave... if you can't than tell him to leave and save both of you the embarrassment of getting shot and killed over a 20$ stereo.
That is self-defense.
Shooting the bastard 'cause he nicked your stuff is not. Shooting because you're frightened out of your wits by all the bullshit and sensational stories about manslaughter by the irresponsible media is not. Shooting because you have a hard on for heroism or for "delivering justice" is not.
Self-defense, first and foremost is a mindset. Even without a gun, having your wits, your calm and especially your priorities straight is priceless!
Your first and formost priority should be to avoid danger altogether! Don't go into neighborhoods where trouble abounds. Take the safe road. When a conflict seems to come, once again back away, try to avoid it.
Most of the time that's all you'll do since you'll never even allow danger to approach you. Most of the time... almost all the time. Unfortunately you can still run of out luck, danger may still find you even if you're actively avoiding it.
It's OK. You've prepared, and you know what you gotta do. You're in danger - maybe lethal danger. Your no.1 priority is to remove yourself from this danger. No. 2 is to deny the danger (the perp) even the chance hurt you. You last priority is to retaliate if you can't avoid the danger!
The gun in your hand is your last refuge. Beyond shooting it also gives you a strong negotiating position. See, I'm armed. I'm dangerous.... however all you have to do to make me leave you alone is let me leave, or leave yourself. Calm, certain to the point.
...and if all else fails, shoot... and for Christ's sake if you own a gun at least go to a range and practice! Practice not only shooting, but what you should do if attacked! Practice it until you can remain calm even under stress! Practice until the self-defense mindset becomes second-nature, until you have that quiet confidence that needs no bravado to carry you through.

I agree with Flaser, your gun is your last defense.
I watched all of the video's in that series "The truth about killing" on youtube, it was quite interesting.
I personally don't believe that guns increase crime everywhere, though I do believe that if you load up a place like Oakland, CA with guns you should expect trouble in your future.
I live out here in Northern, CA. Its a calm place out here, I think thats mostly because of our police force out here, there a tad bit "gung ho" about shooting people but since they have started there has been a decrease in shootings amongst the citizens out here.

Out law guns and only outlaws will have them.
people can be very creative when they want to. if someone is determined to kill another person, the means are trivial at that point.
the only gun i own shoots paintballs.

It doesn't change shit for how much crime is committed- only how crime is carried out.
If guns were never invented, the papers would read something along the lines of 'LOCAL BANK ROBBED AT FALCHIONPOINT'.

I don't think guns lead to more crime, in this country it's mostly knife crime so I'd say knives come before guns.
In the long run though, if you took away guns and knives altogether you'd still have the people who'd use them.

Out law guns and only outlaws will have them. Exactly, just think of the temperance laws that they made back in the US a few decades ago. Everyone still drank alcohol, but now the money was going to the criminals who supplied it rather than the established businesses. If guns are illegal, then the only people who will have them are people who obviously have no problem with doing things that are illegal.

Look at war of whats happening now. If people say we use guns to save people then why are we killing eachother? Were suppose to save people not kill them. The world is suppose to be a good place. But...we fucked up

Hate to be the buzz kill, but it all depends on the situation and environment guns are in. Crime is a sensitive word and is shifty as morality. So the criminology behind guns are as ambiguous of a topic as meaning of government and governance. This is a rich topic. But, there is no absolute answer to the problem of guns and crime.
