Is keeping silent a form of lying?
So, is it?

Keeping the truth is almost the same as lying. A half lie is still a lie anyway.I severely disagree, rights for privacy. You are saying that i need to tell the truth to everyone even if i dont want to, yet, not wanting to is NOT lieing right?
If someone askes me if i have cake and i say i don't want to awnser/stay silence it isn't lieing, your comment states otherwise.
Personally i think that if you GIVE information which is false, but whatever reason then you are indeed lieing, this should always be kept apart from not giving ANY information however.
You lie when you know you are making someone believe wrongly.

Lying = giving false information.
Telling the truth = Giving correct information
Silence = not giving false, nor giving correct information.
This is a prime example of Shrodingers cat.
A cat is sealed in a box with a vale of poison set to designate at a random unknown time. Until the box is opened, the cat can be both considered as a alive and dead.
In other words, you can only define a lie once the box is open. Meaning, once you have given incorrect information.
As silences is considered as not giving information you could say, "No, Silence is not lying"
However, you could also say that in situations, by not giving information it would suggest the opposite of the question and could be considered as a lie.
But persoanlly, I do not see silence as lying. I see it as silence.

Keeping quiet is definitely a form of lying....
Don’t people get charged for keeping quiet about crimes or something....

This is nice that someone is using actual terms.
Again, this situation can be answered on how you perceive it.
If you believe failure or omitting to give out information is lying that is fine.
If you believe saying nothing is not lying that is also fine.

Yes. Whenever you are asked about something you have to tell the truth. Only absolute truth can be considered as "truth". Anything less than that is a lie. Not wanting is not lying, of course. But the it's a totally different case when you are asked, and you either keep silent to hide the truth or tell a lie. And as for privacy, it is inevitable that we tell lies and hide truth (which is lying).

Thank you ^^
I also like to say that silence is golden :D
And perhaps this is where the term came from, through a debate on keeping silent and whether or not it is a lie.

Yes staying silent is a from of lying, but I'm taking a quote from big bully "sometimes telling is good" (How was the dinner. Great.[inner-mind theater....god help me])

It depends on the situation. But, what's important is not whether you think it is lying or not, it is whether you think it is right or wrong, good for the situation, or bad for the situation. If you keep silent about something that you shouldn't be silent about, that can be considered lying. If you keep silent about something that should be kept to yourself, that can just be considered a secret.

seeing as how its 49 to 50% i guess i should weigh in. I dont think it is a form of lying. Lying is misleading or misguiding someone. If somebody asks you something and you dont respond, then your not misleading them. Therefore, they come away with no more information than they started with, and you didnt lie to them.

Wait...
Possible scenario:
Wife: You're late again!? You are going out with that new secretary of yours, isn't it?
You...
What really happened: You were working your ass out. You were doing overtime with your secretary (not THAT overtime, and no romantic involvement whatsoever) and you are saving for your anniversary gift of a trip to Hawaii 5 months from now. You go silent because if you explain this to her that way, she'll think its too detailed to be true and think you're lying.
How 'bout that?

You'd have to endure your wife throwing all the best china at your head, doge and hear them smash against the wall whilst she shouts at you.
You haven't lied, but you've given her reason to believe that you are, and if she was a good wife, she wouldn't think those things in the first place :)

IDK it depends on the situation for me. Overall i will say yes its lying, but in some cases keeping Quiet is better than telling the truth!

No, otherwise it would be easy to force us to bear witness to ourselves in court. That would be a bad thing, I don't want to lose my constitution to something as simple as that.

My first thread in SD, hope I did everything right. This is a problem that I've been thinking about for quite some time. I guess the best way to illustrate my point is through an example:
You're sitting in your primary school's "home room", and your teacher asks everyone who knows how to play an instrument to put his/her hand up. You know that whoever puts their hand up with undeniably be dragged into the orchestra, and you don't want to see the music teacher because you hate his guts. You don't put your hand up.
I think it's fair to say that everyone has been through a situation where they know the truth, but kept silent, for good or bad reasons. The question is, is this a form of lying?
We're not whether discussing whether or not it's for a good cause, like not offending your friend or selling someone out. The question is simple - is it lying? Don't just vote - discuss it too, tell me what you think.
silent for me is i dont want to cooperate.......

For me, stayiong silent is like 'no comment.' so, no. I don't think that is a form of lying.

Some people would lie because its not big of a deal for them if the people their lying to doesn't believe them. And cares little for whats at stake if they get caught.
But people who'd rather keep silent, is protecting something or someone. And they value the thing they might lose if they get caught. Like credibility and trust.
This also varies depending on the person questioning them.
