Kids are less creative according to study
Are kids today less creative then when you were a kid?

Even if kids today are creative, they have fewer outlets for creativity in my opinion.
They're made to grow up too fast to embrace the pure, unadulterated silliness of personal expression!

While I was still in school, I was with a group of Otaku kids. We were pretty creative, since we were the only ones who in some classes who would put our imaginations into our work. Some kids just didn't do it.
Now, I do think that school is part of the problem, because it doesn't teach these kids how to expand and use their imagination, and not giving an outlet for those who do. School yo day is a factory, making it's products by the batches, slapping a release date on it, and making sure the vast majority are functional to do their jobs.
I also don't think that school is the only problem. I have a step dad, (In reality, my new uncle. It's complicated, don't ask.) and he was a mainstream thinker. When ever I was picking classes for the following school year, he tried to tell me to go with the "easy", non'complicated ones. I never listened to him. Despite him, I decided to take classes that I knew I would have fun in, and thought what would help expand my range of knowlege, like Astronomy, Phylosophy, Psycology, Sci-Fi, Fantasy writing, and much more. Getting back on track, if I listened to him and went with the no brainer classes, then I would be as creative as I am today, and it makes me think of how often other kids listen to their parents on what to do?

Kids may be less creative nowadays, compared to the past, but I doubt entertainment has had much of an effect. For example:neko-chan wrote...
The decline was especially noticeable starting in 1990s (I believe this is when pop music became really popular).I wasn't implying that entertainment is making kids less creative. I was pointing out (in jest) how entertainment and pop-culture has become less creative, perhaps because the people who create these are "victims" of declining creativity or maybe the audiences that enjoy them think to themselves, "You know what? I don't need anything more complex than this to stimulate my mind."
It is just conjecture though.

I think that a lot of the creativity that we see comes with learning how to think critically and question things that have happened before us, not just art, but science too. There is a saying out there that is something like "a painting never means the same thing to two different people." I find this to be very true: the human experience is different for everyone, and there are somethings we can't replicate in others with the same things. If you loved teddy bears at the age of 7 (I seriously hope you're older than 7 and on this site) there could be another 7 year old kid that is scared to death of them. I think that what we should be teaching in school, along side the arts and sciences, is a type of enlightenment where you learn to question everything. What is the saying of the assassins in Assassin's Creed? Something like "Nothing is true, Everything is permitted?" I know that in high school I had a teacher that really opened my eyes and made me question everything and learn what the world was like for myself, for better or for worse.
tl;dr: Schools should focus more on critical thinking and continue teaching arts and sciences.

I dont really think that 'kids' are getting any less creative than those of my fathers generation but I will say that the standard for so called 'artists' is exceptionally low right now and has been for years.
Cee Lo Green is like fucking Mozart reborn in this absolute shite hole of a cunting world but back in the 60s he'd be nothing, Trust me... He'd just be some bum working a car wash somewhere!
I think that modern 'creators' are just hyenas ripping apart the artistic carcass of the past and rehashing whatever they decide to rape that week into some good old 'new' shit and all the fucking mugs who listen to their 'work' say "Wow this is so original and fresh" without any degree of sarcasm or thought.
If the kids today listened to some real Mo-town soul they'd probably write it off unless it was a big name like James Brown (Also because he did Rocky IV) but oh no, Cee Lo Greens obviously the man cause he 'in the now'.
I dont hate the man and compared to most of the jokers out there (99.9%) hes godlike, and that shows just how tragic things have become.
Wait a moment... I take it all back! (Maybe the kids are alright after all) ----->

In music, I like to listen to the older stuff, and follow along groups that's been going on for some decades, to a few newer hits, but I'll always love the old rockers and punks. I really like the more emotional and somewhat demonted shit, the ones that talk about hardships, cuz that's what our life is filled with man.
I find that it's funny that people were psycing out about hannah Motana a coupke years back, but now I bearly hear about her. Hell! I don't even hear any hype of the 'Hot new teen singers'. I say, learn a little something from the heart that ain't about fucking or the perfect life, and I'll give ya a shot.

As for the whole Rebecca video. I hate you. You showed me the most vile thing on the face of the planet, though I was happy to see that dislike bar

Most kids these days aren't creative. It's not that they lack creative potential, I just think they're too damn lazy to think outside the box. And with the rapid development of technology, they're getting too used to gathering unoriginal ideas at the push of a button without using their heads to think of something themselves. Plus most schools (In my country anyway) emphasize on the idea that only through academic excellence can one become successful and expect kids to close their eyes, open their mouths and let teachers spoon feed whatever shit they want to them, hence disabling kids to think for themselves. Plus the standard of creativity now is much much lower than what it used to be. Mainstream music right now is a prime example...

To be honest I really can't give a straight "yes" or "no" answer.
As someone who has experience in teaching (during my field study) in my opinion kids' creativity regarding school work is "limited" or "restrained" and it's up to the teachers in helping to improve a child's creativity while making them learn. Also it depends upon the students' initiative as well.
Man, do you know the pain of checking essay papers filled with the same old answers again and again as if they were photocopied in verbatim from a book? I'm telling you it can crack you up! I mean it is still very much possible to construct bogglingly essay questions requiring students to be creative while making them to think of the facts. At that time I didn't have the authority to give homework to my students, my proctor held the shots when it came to that. So I thought to myself, wasn't he getting tired of getting monotonous answers from the students by just making essay questions that would restrict the child's creative thinking and reasoning skills? It's not that I'm belittling my proctor or something but I expected that he could have done better. He could have just asked them to think up of situations that would make a certain set of facts applicable, to a degree creativity would still be restricted but it's not totally lost. I understand that it saves him time in checking papers, but it's detrimental for the students.
Of course this doesn't mean that tests would be all in essay type, that's just plain nuts, just like what K1 said. But a teacher can help his students develop creativity through class recitations, home works and other activities, there is always a perfect time for everything. In my opinion if teachers can make their classes interesting it is bound to spark creativity within the children.
BTW I'm born in the 90's too XD Some time during my report I presented a flick of Full Metal Panic Fumoffu regarding student responsibility and the effect of the environment regarding a student's capability to learn. I used the 1st episode wherein Sosuke was having a hard time understanding Japanese literature due to being raised in the Middle East and in the midst of Guerrilla warfare, at the same time that was when he forgot Chidori's notebook. My teacher was laughing all the way along with the whole class. And I got a very good grade from that too XD

Frankly I do not know if kids lack creativity these days. but what I do know is that children from when they were born to age of 12 have a wide imagination. Thus I believe that if they do lack creativity then it is rather simple for them to obtain one. all what we have to do is simply enable them to do so.

OT: Meh, it will pass, in schools today, we are slowly trying to make our students compete with china, in a effort to compete with china in science in math, in china the reverse is occurring in order foster ingenuity and innovation. I imagine it will pass as society grows and evolves/
