Question of curiosity.

I was sitting in my room bored when I was looking at my dvds. I came around thinking in the distant future, some odd years from now. Would dvds be obsolete? You know the way we download files now and everything. It was a very interesting question. So would you think it they would become obsolete?

Very few innovative devices, ideas, etc can avoid the cruel future of obsolescence. DVDs will share in this future.

Don't we already have Blue Ray, or whatever it's called? I'm aware that these haven't completely replaced DVD's yet, but it will happen. Eventually, all movies will be beamed to us through thought. ...Thought movies will be pricey, but the experience should be rather satisfying. I don't really want to be the one who has to work the bugs out on those though, sounds a bit dangerous.

It's happened before, and it will happen again. CDs replaced tapes, DVDs replaced VHS, and Blu-ray will replace DVDs. Before too long, some new thing will replace Blu-ray. Just the way it works. And part of the reason I'm opposed to getting a Blu-ray player. Why spend all that money when it's just going to be obsolete in a few years anyway? At least DVDs were around a long time before HD and Blu-ray showed up. With the way technology is going, I wouldn't be surprised if a new, "better" format came out before 2015.

Something tells me that DVDs will still be around for a little regardless if BLu Ray grows bigger. I know VHS was a straggler for a couple of years when DVDs came out
Besides.. who would want to download a movie thats 19GB just because its in 1080p? screw that.

I don't think Blue Ray would beat DVD's soon yet, even it might grow, but they do cost a lot right? And what about players? Well i am not browsing a lot of shopping sites nor shopping, but i haven't seen yet any players which could play Blue Ray movies and wouldn't cost a hell (excluding PS3).
I'm sure thou that there should be already Blue Ray players out there >_>

Rather than the question itself..
Did you find it a bad thing for DvD to become obsolete in a near future?.. Why bother your mind with that?.. Like the DvD that replaced VCD in our earlier times, I think I wouldn't mind if something more convenient will replace the DvD..

Well other then me, who here buys anime dvds? And dvds in general, I asked this question because I knew most if not all people here download anime to watch, and it just intertwined with the question if that was what would replace dvds.

I download when I want a quick fix; and if I happen to like the movie enough, I will go out and buy the dvd/bluray (wtf ever they are called) when I've got money. I like having hard copies around. Other wise, I just download and hold onto it for a while, then make space later for something new.

All forms of technology are rendered obsolete eventually. This trend will continue until we actually reach the limits of technology in a certain department (Rumor has it that processor development speeds are slowing down and reaching their peak which will cause us to have to change the very concept of a processor).
As for the movies straight into your head idea tsuyoshiro mentioned. I plan on creating a thread in the near future when I have the opportunity. After I some research on that specific area. I'm hoping that it'll be educational for a lot of people.

hmmmm...If net becomes faster , a lot, and pc processors have higher processing speed with a cheap price and HDs having more space, greater than 1TB? Maybe that's the time when DVDs will be replaced.

Personally, I think that digital storage will eventually completely replace physical storage, especially when the tech for augmented reality becomes available to the consumer market.
I'd personally prefer a holo rack of disks rather then an actual rack, given how much less space the holo projector will theoretically take up, and how much more it could hold.

Just look at how popular iTunes is. That's basically the same thing; people buy tracks or even whole albums with no physical counterpart.
I, for one, won't be joining that movement. If I'm going to buy something, I'd like something I can actually hold. Because really, if I don't have something I can hold, why bother paying for it? I could just as easily download it or borrow it from a friend or something.
While I understand that when people buy stuff off of iTunes, it's to be within the realms of the law, but I simply cannot stand the idea of paying to own something that I don't really own. If you spin things a bit, you can say that downloading an album or movie off of some website (for free, illegally) is the same as your friend buying the thing off of iTunes and giving you a copy.

I'm not sure about DVDs, but if you look at the current gaming scene, you'll notice a slight trend emerging, especially with the Xbox 360 and the new trend of downloading full games. I'm thinking that eventually discs will become obsolete, (or maybe more expensive), and that downloading will become the norm. I'm not really thinking that way with dvds, however, because of Blu-Ray and such. That's a good deal of income right there, and it would take forever for a blu-ray dvd to download to someone's DVR or whatever.

i think DVDs are just another step in the evolution. vinyl, 8 track, casset, CD. or, film, magnetic tape(Beta, VHS), laser disc, DVD...

Curious and Wondering
DVDs will soon become a thing of the past, just like cassette tapes and film negatives. Eventually, something will come. Blu-Ray's one step forward, for now.

It was thirty years ago when the Betamax tapes came out, blazing the path that VHS and DVD would eventually take. No surprise if thirty years into the future Blockbuster is renting out tiny chips that we put into portable projectors, or some crazy thing like that.

I was told that there is something even better then Blu-ray available, but it isn't sold at retailers because each disc/movie would cost around $100.
Transformers 2 isn't worth that much.

DVD's will become obsolete as all technology dose one day, as for what replaces them is the question we must ask. Will we be buying blue-rays for all of our movie needs? How about downloading all of what we need? I will say that a system of just downloading will most likely not happen for a long time so I think blue-ray will take DVD’s place right now. There is just too much to monitor with download for it to be the only way to acquire media though it will happen one day, going to the store to buy something will be too much of a hassle.
