Should employers be able to check your facebook page?

yeah true anyone could check it but still....the people you work for going out of there way to make your life hell. =-=.Actually quite the opposite - they are trying not to make their own lives a living hell. Almost every business's single most time and money wasting issue is personnel. In many places if you hire the wrong person it can be difficult and expensive to fire them. As a result employers should do whatever is in their power legally to help pick the right people to hire.
These days work ethic isn't very common - I ran one store recently for four months as a favor to my boss. The store was large enough that I had 10-12 people on each shift. During my four month stay I never had a single week when every one showed up for work.
People want pay checks not jobs - employers want people interested in actually working not just collecting a paycheck. The employers are not the bad guys here.

Yes. If you put something on your facebook that would keep you from getting a job its your own damn fault. Not to mention you can put your facebook to private, so whats the point? Its not like they can tell you to friend them or you won't get the job.

Yes, thank you, get off my back and go die somewhere.
I really don't give a shit what you think about me.
I'm happy with my life and at least I have better things to do than to get on some random persons back for no fucking reason. Piss off.
You sound mad. If you don't care about their opinion of you, then don't reply.
OT: Life's unfair. When I hear about people complaining because colleges or companies rejected them due to their public material on facebook, I have to roll my eyes.
Don't post inappropriate pictures or comments if you don't want a potential employer to judge you on it. Even better, set everything to private or just don't have a facebook.

"With that sort of attitude I don't see you getting to CEO level positions."I don't want to be a CEO. -_-
You obviously don't get my point.
Let me put it simply with your attitude you wont get anywhere that pays you large wads of cash.
But I already have. lol
Look I only have an small "attitude" because I'm on the internet.
I like to vent, okay?
I'm a different person in real life.
I'm actually pretty nice once ya get to know me.
Lol yea everyone says that but I'll get off ya back now :p

Do I need to call the Wahhbulance for you now?
I originally was thinking about getting off your back but with that response beating on you more just to spite you seems more fun.
Originally I was commenting on your attitude to work.
Telling me to go die somewhere when I was being civil is just uncalled for.
Personally I have no qualms with work colleagues who express themselves in a different manner (body modifications ect), if my employer hired them it's pretty obvious they believe the person is suited to the job.
But looking from an employer's point of view without knowing the person I would find it hard to hire them compared to someone else who has the similar qualifications and experience but presents themselves as clean cut and tidy.

I guess not. Employers shouldn't be able to hire you based on your friends and personal relations.

Bit of an intrusion into your personal life, and your facebook page isn't really the best source of information on you, probably a lot of pictures of you drunk at parties and stuff like that, hard to get a job with that sort of stuff as their reference point.

If your 'personal' stuff is online it's fair game if you leave it public, be it by accident or purposely. The onus falls on you to be responsible enough to ensure your photos from last night are only shared with your friends and not there for the world to see you streaking or making out with a goat.

Honestly, even if they can't see it directly, they can ask other employees to show them by logging in or something.
My policy is not to post/tag anything that I wouldn't show to my own best friends and parents. It seems to work so far.

It is fair for employer to check your facebook. Which is why you should always watch what you or your friends post. It is no longer private once its on the internet. Sad that this is can be used against you but all fair I guess.

I don't really think it's fair for employers to go searching through your FB looking for something more personal, but for right now I don't think there's much stopping them from doing it.

Personally from the viewpoint of a business owner. Having presentable employees is my way of protecting the investment I have made in time and money and developed good will with my customers
Leaving dress mode and hair color and tattoos etc aside.
The most disgusting thing I see are employees (not mine)in dirty or stained clothes with a spit cup (usually a soda can or bottle) hanging out of a pocket
Conversations generally run like this:
Uh I am from XYZ company (turn. spit) I was sent here to fix your (turn. spit) [name something]
For me long hair is not a problem nor tattoos as long as they are tasteful and not covering the entire exposed skin or
Piercings don't fly
Sorry all but the way I earn a living is to provide service. Employees that leave a bad impression drive customers to my competition
For what it is worth those who spend the weekend getting screwed up (then posting it on Facebook or the like) tend to think that Mondays start around noon and Fridays are over when they get their paycheck
Edit
More for what it is worth
Here in Tn you can get a background check on any prospective employee for $25 Includes everything including that all records of the individual prior to their becoming 18 have been blocked by court order (OMG Watson A clue!!)
Facebook saves the employer the money and anyone who puts up information that they should know would be detrimental to their getting hired, Gets what they deserve

no. that's jsut stupid.
If my old manager saw my facebook page, she probably would have re-thought about her choice :L

We've all heard or read about stories where an employer fires or refuses to hire an employee because of something they saw on the employee's facebook or other social networking page. On one hand, what an employee does off-the-job should not be taken into account as long as he or she does the job properly, but on the other hand, there may be serious issues that may be uncovered by looking at the employee's social networking pages.I'm more in the first camp; what you do outside of your job is your business, and I don't care if you're a freaking KKK wizard as long as that shit stays off the job. (But if you're a Klansman I don't think you'd be working for me, a brown woman, anyway.) Apparently, the German government agrees with me and has passed a law limiting what companies can or cannot use against their employees.

Spoiler:
Do you agree with the practice of checking on employees' facebook pages and/or googling them? Why or why not?

Meh, I don't really see the point of Facebook.
But for the sake of staying on topic, I would have to say no, they shouldn't. Then again, if you're smoking weed and shit, it's obvious that you shouldn't post those photos for the whole world to see.

Whether or not they should be able to do so is probably secondary, b/c if they want to know something about you, in this day and age, it's easy enough, and it'd be hard to prove on what grounds they rejected you.
Best thing is just to have your integrity, be honest about who you are, and take what comes your way, the praise and the blame.

I believe employers should be able to check an individual's facebook page or any other information available to them, but at the same, they should not make decisions based solely on one particular act.
Just to provide a simple illustration:
Employee A is hardworking and completes all the assigned tasks without fail. However, some of his drunk photos on a particular weekend are found on Facebook. His employers decide to sack him.
Employee A's contributions to the company should be taken into consideration, instead of an immediate decision to remove him.

Note to self: 4chan was made so you can post and exchange ideas on all the cp, loliporn, surprise-butt-secks, yaoi, furry, or any perverse topic considered taboo by society. Facebook, on the other hand, was made to poke the hell out of your friends and post camwhore-but-totally-legal-and-not-socially-taboo of yourself and others.

Indeed, as it has been said a number of times... I've always had the opinion that if you put ANYTHING on the internet, it's no longer within your control. Being it's really not.
If you don't want your employer to know about it, you either A: should not be doing it, or B: should not be telling anyone who will listen about it. It's really that simple.
