Should religion play a bigger role in politics and why?

Actually, there not another religion as divided as Christianity. Why? Because (most of the ) other religions don't claim absolute knowledge or absolute interpretation of knowledge.Warning! The following video is Atheist propaganda, if such material causes you to incessantly rage, just don't watch it! If you're religious, but have the good humor to laugh at a satire that pokes at the inconsistencies surrounding your belief, you'll likely have a laugh too... though chances are you'll be still offended.

...so I wonder what "singular religion" or RELIGION in big capital letters does OP refer to?
I don't know about divided, but Christianity is not alone is being extremely divisive. All of the Abrahamic religions claim to be the one true religion, although Jews don't go on about it unlike the other two, probably due to millennia of being randomly stoned/burnt by the Christians and Muslims.
Christianity as whole has really cleaned up it's act over the last 3 centuries, and many Christians nowadays believe that their faith may not be the only source of salvation.
If you're curious as to my views, they're basically the same as Richard Dawkins. I dislike mindless hero-worship, but I've found that I disagree with virtually nothing he has to say regarding religion, and I listened to him quite a bit.

I understand that religions have an impact on modern society, but the tenets of a specific religion are based upon the values of the societies in which they originate. Society doesn't exist in a vacuum, shit changes. I'm sure Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, and every other great prophet would agree, one cannot expect the teachings that guided a society that existed centuries ago to apply to modern times. The core beliefs should remain the same, but as society progresses, the teachings should evolve.
Religion has yet to catch up to the 21st century. Until it does, politics and religion are fundamentally incompatible.

Sunni and Shite fight all the time.
Reform and penis hair jews fight all the time.
Only the Irish and the early popeist dumbfucks fight.

Religion and politics are the same thing.. people who think they or their own moral brand is right. Liberals and conservatives are their own religion with their own nutjobs like Perry and Paul. This country is run by false prophets and moralist douches... but the same can be said of all govts around the world... except the swiss... i never hear shit overthere.

In the early modern ages the Pope was the center of religious and political power. When old religions and new government meet, bad things happen. Also religious fanatics are even intolerant to other scions of their own religion let alone other religions. I'd say having the President swear to the Bible is good enough.

No.
Politic is politic and religion is religion. Having religion being politicized means dirtying the noble meaning of that religion itself, unless the basic foundation of that country is religion itself (Saudi Arabia, for example).
What I mean is, country with law as basic foundation should not use religion as an excuse for their policy.

I also voted no and this is why,
Allowing politicians to use religion to gain voters is far more corrupt, being religious doesn't necessarily make you moral. We choose our politicians to protect our liberties and ultimately lead the country to prosperity. What you often have are politicians who are against gay marriage, gay soldiers, etc. These are not issues to be worrying about; it only provides a red herring to a far more important issue.

I vote no to this because of the movie "book of eli". but seriously, i vote no because religion is an entirely different thing. those religious people butting on the governments are (i think) corrupt. the church is already not counted to pay taxes anymore and now they want in on the government? just look at Portugal and Spain way back long ago. Both parties have strong ties with God and they used that to conquer other countries, and according to that (since Philippines was colonized by the Spaniards long ago) they Spanish priest molested our women. oh and by the way, i just pointed that out because of the topic at hand. no racism involve. i don't care anyways what happened long ago. besides, our country right now is fucked and the church is involve with it(something related to the reproductive health bill, i don't know the details and i don't care).

Uhhh, no, I'm pretty sure the human race is over the whole Divine Right thing, and why should we stop there, religion should not dictate how we pick our leader it should be because of their policy and all that other good stuff.

No. Because then it would not be objective.
However, that doesn't mean government should force moral standards based on a single religion either, like we have today.
Or in a worse extent, starts forcing their ideals of "freedom" into people's lives, such as the no-head-coverings law recently passed in France, people WILL suffer in just trying to practice their religion. Sometimes what seems restrictive is actually someone's choice.

If politics followed a religion, then corruption on governments would be complete. Last time religion ruled politics Kings and Queens ruled the people.

No. Even though I am a religious person, if religion plays a bigger role it will be chaos. Picture the pope was the president. Even though some may view this as good, if the Pope thinks what you are doing is wrong, rather than trying to reason with you, he will use force to make you change your ways. It will basically end up like the high priest in the movie Priest were the priest eventually began to view himself as God's right hand and you not following every word he says is you going against God.

Fuck no. It already has too much influence as it is, and i don't want to live under a theocracy
Its money that is corrupting politics, not a lack of religion

It doesn't matter if religion plays a bigger role or not. As long as Politics has power, there will always be corruption as people tend to be corrupted by power.
Religion is just one form of power that people can have and abuse. But these same people will just abuse any other power that comes their way.
It's not what is introduced as the power, but rather the mindset of the people who seek power tend to have.
