SPOILER: Using This Musicians Image Wrong?
Is His Inclusion In This Game Wrong?
0
1st: this may contain some SPOILER for those who do not know who is on the roster for Guitar Hero 5, so be warned.
2nd: Okay i have been on Fakku! long enough to know that anything video game related goes in the gaming section, but i wanted input on the subject of Kurt Cobain's inclusion in Guitar Hero 5. Kurt is considered widely as an awesome artist, who was not all about being some media monkey for tabloids to just devour like other people. so it is actually a rising conflict that Kurt is in the game.
Now the guitar hero team has been vying for Kurt Cobain's likeliness to be included in the game for three years now. Now they finally have it. however many have protested that using Kurt Cobain in Guitar Hero 5 is trashing his image, and the legacy he left behind, and how his initial suicide was (associated) with how he didn't want to become another face in the media.
Courtney Love, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, along with other media peoples feel that Kurt Cobain being included in GH5 is a "posthumous humiliation" to his name and image. do you all think/feel the same about Kurt's inclusion on GH5?

I don't think I'd care even if it was someone I admired or thought actually HAD a great legacy or some such bullshit. It's just a video game. Having a musician's likeness and name in a music-based game, even if they are dead, really just makes sense. He is, after all, a somewhat iconic figure.
Although, it's Kurt Cobain, so I don't care either way. He's ridiculously overrated and idealized.

I think it's the type of thing you really need to ask the person about. So no, I don't think it's ok for them to do this.

I agree with Dante that Kurt Cobain is too idolized (or idealized), and don't think his suicide entire dealt with him not wanting to be seen as a souless musician. I think that part of the story is only propagated to save face that he commited suicide.
That said, Kurts wife has the right to say no to using his image. HOWEVER, I hope they don't play it off as saying "oh but this is what kurt wants and is exactly against his wishes"

Personally, I think he's too dead to give a fuck about what guitar hero does to his image.Haha I guess this sums up the whole thread

If they can do it with the Beatles, they can do it with Kurt Cobain. The fact that he committed suicide is ultimately his own fault and should not be taken into consideration when deciding this.

I'm not that up on why he committed suicide, but if that was in the note or something, I think people should honor his memory.
The news here is making it sound like the only problem is that his inclusion involves a Bon Jovi song.

I think it's in very poor taste. If we're going to show the dead any respect at all (and that is a big thing in American culture, as well as many others), we shouldn't use their likenesses in any fashion that they would disagree with if alive. That's why we shouldn't have dead actors selling vacuum cleaners or Gaundhi endorsing the iPod. While this is a bit different, since a likeness of a musician is being used in a game about music, I think we should still consider how Cobain would feel about it and how the likeness would be used.
Really, why the fuck would you need his likeness anyways? Will someone's life be incomplete if they can't see Kurt Cobain on stage while playing his songs? How will this enrich the game at all? Do you get to unlock Kurt Cobain and play as him? If so, then that is very fucking disrespectful.

Being a ex-Nirvana junkie...
when "With the Lights Out" came out, fans loved the fact that there were uncut, uncensored Nirvana works included on ...3 CDs? Along with a DVD full of music videos and concert footage. From what I heard, Courtney Love, Krist and Dave all had at it in court because Courtney believed that since it was her husband, that it was her money.
If you think about it, Kurt was never partial to the media but he was considered a popular idol to cover in the 90's since so many fans related to him and his mumbo-jumbo lyrics. The top reason why he committed suicide in the first place was that he hated the fame and over-exposure he gained as a musician, thus he ended his life. (Suicide Note, here.)
So this may be a good move. Kurt never wanted to be such a HUGE idol and Krist, Dave and even Courtney are fighting to preserve his image. Putting him in the game is basically shitting all over his suicide.
Just like how Eric Clapton's child died from falling out the window from lack of parenting or how John Lennon's assassination was valid due to him being so popular as an activist and a musician? Seriously dude, not fair.
Most likely, Paul McCartney gave the okay for The Beatles' Rockband. Plus, there was no documentation from George or Ringo or John saying that they didn't want to become part of something so exploitative.
