(Storyline) Harry Potter: Lord Voldamort
0
For those who haven't read the Harry Potter novels nor seen the movies or been under a rock for the last twenty years and doesn't know anything about Harry Potter,
There is a villian named Lord Voldamort. Hes been dead for a while but the terror he caused was so great that people are to afraid to speak his name so he is instead called He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
Now throughtout the novel Harry Potter, the protagonist, says Lord Voldamort quiet often since he does not fear it and everytime he says it all the people around him yelp or something. They're surprised. This happens even in his school.
Now my question is, if Lord Voldamort is so bad that people are afraid to speak his name. How is it that the children know who to be afriad of?
I'll simply it, if nobody speaks of Lord Voldamort how is it that these children who have never heard his name spoken know that when someone says Lord Voldamort they should be afraid. As far as I'm aware the generation that wasn't alive during Voldamorts reign could have no idea what his real name is and since nobody is courageous enough to say it how did they find out?
So yeah... How is it everyone knows Lord Voldamorts name if nobody speaks of it?
I consider this a serious question since the Harry Potter series is pretty foolproof (The story is solid and everything agrees with the history bla bla bla)

It's 'Voldemort'. And you don't have to say his name to know it. I'm sure it's written down somewhere. Nobody ever said you couldn't read the name.

If someone is so afraid to speak his name don't you think its probable that they'd be to afraid to write it?\
Edit: ...and if a kid simply read his name that wouldn't explain the sheer terror that they experience whenever its spoken. I've read books about Stalin and Hitler but do you see me throwing my arms up in the air whenever someone mentions them?

Harry Potter wasn't the only one who actually used his name. Some of the other characters, such as dumbledore (and maybe lupen/sirius?) used it too. It can be assumed I think that somewhere in all the thousands of wizards in the world of Harry Potter, there would have been at least a few more not in the books with the balls (or stupidity) to say his name.

But even though I haven't read the finally two books, like the story fanatic I am i've discovered as much as I could from other means ( *cough* )
Think about how it would've been in the real world:
You've heard about an ''hardcore'' evil guy who still even after his death spreads fear througout the known world. Ofcourse you're going to by allmost any means nessesary look up and find out who's everyone so afraid of? Am I correct?

Its said in the novel that Dumbledore was the only man Voldamort ever feared so of course Dumbledore would never be afraid. As for Lupen and Sirius I can't recall them ever saying it. The only group I could think of that COULD speak his name were his supports but even they didn't most of the time. They addressed him as The Dark Lord and if I recall correctly they felt they were unworthy to call him Voldamort so yeah they wouldn't.

I said before thats not the case for me. Maybe if I was alive in Russia fearing everyday that Stalins police would come and kill me I'd be afraid of his name but I wasn't SO I'M NOT. So how is it that these kids are scared? I doubt they could read something so horrible it'd scare them to this degree. What kind of parents would allow them to? What kind of library would allow this? None. I understand that the generation that lived during Voldamorts rule could fear him but not those who didn't.

ive had alot of friends who acquired their parent's phobias.
Im guessing these children witnessed their parents freak like crazy to the name when they were really young and made it a mental note that its something scary and should be freaked out on.
HArd to explain it but thats the simplest way i can explain it.

I'm fairly sure that there were other members of the order of the phoenix who spoke his name. Regardless though, even just dumbledore saying his name would be enough, as dumbledore was a very famous and political person. He always made a point when talking about it to other people that they should use his real name - so even if he was the only one in the whole world of harry potter it would have been enough.

The best explaination I can think if is that the name of Voldemort might have been known like how kids learn to use cuss words. Someone finds out, it gets passed around and some one dares another to say it so on. Though I think you guys are reading a little too deep into this matter... >_>

in fact, he NEVER died until the ending of the last book (where he was killed by HP in very shitty way imho).
AND, the explanation might be, that there's actually no person decribed that fears to WRITE his name (and even in the first movie, Harry comes to know that name from a paper Hagrid writes).
another one is, that Albus Dumbledore never feared him and always called him by his name.
you choose :)

It's called a "plot hole." The Harry Potter series is not foolproof. It was written for kids, by a lady who was not a professional writer in the least. It became popular and has been forever placed into the annuls of history, but unlike great works that are ignored by the public when they are released, if the Harry Potter series had not become popular, it would not have survived the passage of time and would not be mentioned by English professors fifty years from now, who say that the books were wrongfully ignored when they came out.

I agree. The book started out as a childrens novel but I'm pretty sure when blood and death was introduced to the story she had no longer wrote it for children. The book evolved and though the earlier novels are trash really I feel the later books are pretty good. Be it her or a good editor :p

No, still for kids. She just understood, I think, that her audience got a little older, despite being the same people, generally. The books where just written over the span of a decade. The only reason I finished out the series is because I was like 8 when the first book came out.
Also, Voldemort was only gone for like 10 years. I don't think people would completely forget his name.

I really admire J.K rowling, she is a single mother who happens to know what kids like. Its simple to understand too, but the later sereis has philopshical stuff in it about life, love and tragic stuff. I reckon this is one of the reasons that made Harry Potter famous, its ability to explain inner journeys and how it relates to peoples experiences.
As for the fear of voldemort, i think its mentally engraved into the minds of all mages due to the truamatic experiences, and this fear passed on to their offsprings. Though i think my theory is kinda bullshit.

I agree with @exterminatus who admiring J.K rowling.
well, voldemort is the feared one who had a power to resurrect if someone called his name, cuz his blood/power runs through Harry, and It's kind of some trigger to resurrect him, like in Harry potter and the goblet of fire.

Lol, Rowling.
Honestly, Harry Potter is to Wizards and Magic what Twilight is to Vampires.
But, as for Voldemort, it's because, during his reigns, his name was a Taboo, and if you spoke it, Candle Jack...err, the Death Eaters came and took your soul...fuck, I dunno. Killed you, or something.
And, since all wizards are paranoid fucks, everyone assumed a subconcious fear of him still being alive after his fall, and thaught to themselves "Well, what If the Taboo is still in effect? If I say Voldemort, Candle Jack will come and eat me."
