The possibility of balance

It is common knowledge that the majority of people greatly favor one side of their brain over the other. This has me thinking, is it at all possible to train the lesser half of your brain? Why not use your not-so-good hand when you eat? Why not try and learn to write with BOTH hands? I think that training both sides of the mind could possibly increase ones' potential in many things. Maybe we can reach a day where people often use fifteen or twenty percent of our minds' potential, as opposed to ten. That would be a great day for mankind. [And maybe now some of us have an excuse to beat with that other hand now] -AT9-

"We only use ten percent of our brains" = FALSE

Anyways, I don't think that making yourself ambidextrous would help in any way, besides being able to use both hands equally well. Ambidextrous people aren't geniuses that can do everything better than those who have one dominant hand.

Thank you, sir. Way too many people believe in that shinanigans.
Being ambidexterous can be usefull if you were, say, a boxer or something. But for most people, it's not particularly usefull.
Also not something that would help your brain at all. People favor different areas of their brain in corespondance with the way they process things, personality traits, things like that.
I suggest you try juggling. some folks with degrees think it can help brain function, particularly logical processing and spacial understanding.
But I'm not a nuerologist, so I'm not the best person to ask, I'm sure.

If you want to improve brain function then just exercise your brain. Read a book, do a crossword. Hell, even play brain age on the D.S.

In my defense, I never stated that doing other things didn't increase brian function; I assumed that was a given. I choose this particular area of brain function as a topic because I've never heard anyone talk about it. I don't hear doctors discussing it on T.V or books either [though I'm sure they do, but its' a big world and only so many places I can check in a given amount of time]. I also didn't say I was seeking to get smarter; this subject just peaked my curiosity. While we're on the topic, 5 different thanks in five different languages to those that used the word ambidextrous, because I could not [while writing this thread] for the life of me remember that word, or I'd have used it [instead of trying horribly to describe it]. Also, I appologise for the inacurracy of the 'ten percent of brain fuction' statement; I've never been told otherwise. I HATE following popular mis-conceptions, so thanks for that as well. -AT9-

Coincidentally, I was talking to my colleagues about how the brain works just the other day.
I would think learning to use one's left hand more efficently and effectively (provided that s/he is a right-hander) does train the brain since it is trying to change an already deeply embedded action.

The left brain right brain thing is also something of a pop-culture myth as well. Obviously there are right and left sides to the brain and they serve different functions but they are not separated to the point of one side being "Math?! What the fuck do I do with this shit?". There is a lot of intercommunication between them and they work in tandem towards the same goal of breaking down information.

Like it says, you always train both sides of the brain because for information to be processed it goes through both. Using your opposite hands to do things (left if you're right, right if you're left), playing Brain Age, etc, are all good for building up your brain agility.

It's one of those things that you hear and see all the time, but only rarely does someone tell you that it's not true. I myself believed it for a long time because I simply didn't know it wasn't true. I don't study the brain or anything, and I've never had any interest in it, so how could I argue with all the advertisements and shows that said it was true?

n 2006, researchers at Lafayette College and Johns Hopkins University in a study found that left-handed men are 15 percent richer than right-handed men for those who attended college, and 26 percent richer if they graduated. The wage difference is still unexplainable and does not appear to apply to women.
wiki
then again, this study doesnt really reflect that left handed people tend to have more psychological problems, learning disorders and similar drawbacks...
btw, what about linear sequential vs visual simultaneous in thought processing, has this also been debunked as a myth?

Don't think so. I was on an elliptical a while back, I noticed my feet were moving forward at first, I looked back at my feet and they looked like they were going backwards. I stopped looking for a bit, and my feet were going in a forward movement again.
you also have to look at the feet too. I'm ambidextrous with my legs (definitely not arms.) I play soccer, and to be good I decided I should depend on both legs for favorable plays. So I practiced juggling. I could do 17 with my right leg, 3 with my left. I practiced my leg, and after about three weeks I could do 7. Not a huge improvement, but better. I then did both legs, before I could only get up to 8 with both (due to leg mess-up) now I can do 15 with both.

Clearly, ambidexterity is usefull in sports. It's likely that the same sorts of activities you would use to try to learn to be ambidextrious would also help in spacial understanding. I don't have any proof for this, it just seems to make sense to me.

Or it could just be a total fluke. One type of hand dominance statistically has to be dominant in any comparison. It's like those studies that say what sort of zodiac sign is most likely to get into a car accident. If you draw from a large enough data pool then some sort of correlation will arise.
Of course, this is just apriori skepticism of something as trivial as which hand you use affecting your wage. It could be true or it could be something as simple as someone like Bill Gates being left handed and skewing the data to all hell (since the population is quite a bit lower for lefties).
