The way the Media treats Nudity/Sexuality

Check this out, By us condoning nudity to children the more likely they are to emulate it. Public Nudity isn't something appreciated and seeing our kids running around buck naked can't really spell anything good....imagine the horrors of young girls being taught to love sex before their lives really even started yet.
But heres the thing--If the media glorifies violence, most people have the sense to know: Well, thats obviously nothing like what killing a person is (or whatever, I think the point is made) I think brief nudity shouldn't be that big a deal. What is so wrong with seeing someone's breasts as opposed to seeing someone stab someone else and kill them? It's not as if seeing breasts are enough for a kid to start having sex constantly, or if a girl sees a guy's Penis, I highly doubt thats going to turn her into a giant slut. It's just for realism--If thats how a body is why should it be censored?
EDIT: Thanks for all the replies, apologies for the double post.
My main point being that kids already have active enough imaginations. Cartoon Violence gets a pass; it doesn't have a place in this conversation. I'm talking R-rated violence (and X-rated Nudity/sex). You know, the type of stuff you generally shield your kids from if you so happened to be a parent who was a good parent.
And I don't have to suppose this when it's already happening. In places like Europe and Australia where the legal drinking age is 16, legal age for anything is 16, and people don't give a flying fuck about sex...kids are out doing all this and it's normal to them. Whether or not pregnancy rates skyrocket, I don't know.
Of course we're desensitized enough already; when I was a kid I laughed at cartoon violence. I'm sure everyone else thought it was funny, too. I can't even imagine trying to watch something with no physical action because that made the show. I was one of the lucky ones who didn't try to copy. But the rules aren't so carbon obvious - some kids don't know any better. To the person above me who said that 'it was something special because it was hidden away', that's the fault of bad parenting.
How so? I'm away at school, and it's a relief because I'm used to School -> Home. Soon as I got my hands on money I splurged a good chunk of it. (On a crappy purchase I might add but I'll be getting it back) My mother never let me do anything, and so now I'm doing whatever I feel like I can. And it's the same for every other kid brought up this way. My point? You should gradually grant your kids freedom, not all at once, especially with this allowing younger kids to view nudity bit. Maybe later.
I remember when I was about 15/16, my mom decided to be nosy and look at history on the family comp downstairs. She said something along the lines of 'don't let me catch you doing it again' and did so because she felt she needed to correct a behavior that wasn't very 'christian'. The hell would I care if my 14 year old kid was looking at porn (or hentai for that matter)? I would happen to care if he got a girl his age pregnant.

...When nudity is considered worse than violence on media then you know something, somewhere has gone terribly wrong.
But media will continue to get filtered so it doesn't get sued by X group of people, on the nudity/sexuality part we can thank parental/christian groups for it.
Everything should be unfiltered, be it violence/nudity or w/e, in the end it's a parent's job to filter what the kid will see.
But NOOO!
Nudity on media, violence on video games and X type of music pushes kids to the wrong direction, it has nothing to do with parenting or the lack of it.

Old soldiers never die, young ones do.
Regardless of country, for the most part, we ask our young ones to die for us, to protect us from the others. So to an extent there is a cultural need for them to accept violence into their lives. In any language or culture there are tales of valor and might that deal with vanquishing a foe. Infecting the mind with these images and desires that may later be needed to enact. I am not condoning such action, but with limited resources strife will be a constant as it has been.
As for sexuality, is there a strong need to subject children to it? Undeniably teenagers are physically ready, but in a monogamist society are they yet ready to handle the reciprocation of procreation?
For both sexuality and violence I would prefer if we could wait until the individual was ready for such things, but unfortunately the world is never so simple.

I've noticed this two. I mean, on cable tv(not HBO or those other paid channels) you can show bodies cut in half and hearts being ripped out of people, but tits are off limits. And the supreme court recently argued that violence in videogames cannot be regulated but nudity can. Not that i am a fan of censorship in the first place, but that seems a bit unfair to me.
Actually in Roger Eberts review of Passion of the Christ he said something i found memorable.
I think the reason(or part of it anyways) sexuality gets treated so differently than violence is that parents are afraid to talk to there children about the topic of sex, and thus depictions of sexuality in media get unfairly censored. I also think America is a lot more prudish than people sometimes think

I said the film is the most violent I have ever seen. It will probably be the most violent you have ever seen. This is not a criticism but an observation; the film is unsuitable for younger viewers, but works powerfully for those who can endure it. The MPAA's R rating is definitive proof that the organization either will never give the NC-17 rating for violence alone, or was intimidated by the subject matter. If it had been anyone other than Jesus up on that cross, I have a feeling that NC-17 would have been automatic.

Kids are curious, and will imitate what there idols do. If kids watch DBZ, they'll imitate the kamehameha blast to destroy the moon. If kids watch porn, they'll immitate it and next thing you know we'll have pregnant 12 year old getting abortions.
intense violence is censored from kids, just as "intense romance" is censored from kids. we already have way too many pregnant 16 year olds, and there will be ALOT more if the media portrays it as normal behavior (which they already do)

I think, for anyone to see porn or violence with gore/blood/etc need to pass a common sense test that confirms your sanity and IQ over mentally retardation. The age doesn't/shouldn't matter. Your maturity, intelligence, and just basic common sense should be the MOST important things

Considering that we live in a nation that was in large part influenced by Christianity during its founding, it is somewhat understandable how we treat sexual acts (such as fornication) in the media. Give it some time, you'll find that the number of people who understand "Freedom of Religion" as "Freedom from Religion", will increase, while the Religious population that advocates the current handling of this sort of content declines. A likely result: this issue being addressed much differently.Patience is a virtue.
You know what? That's bullshit. The US was *NOT* founded on a Christian basis, in fact the founding fathers have done everything they could to keep religion *OUT* of the government and federal policy.
It was only after the Civil War and subsequent religious revival that Christianity has come to dominate the public discourse in the country.

Perhaps I misstated what I meant, I was referring to how religion had a much greater impact on the denizens of American society (referring more to the individuals, not so much the nation itself) at that time as opposed to now, where the number of atheists appear to be higher. Nonetheless, I thank you for pointing out said bullshit, in fact, I applaud it. Misinformation is terrible, thank you for clearing that up.

I think there needs to be a clear distinction between "nudity" and "sex" in this conversation.
I'm not for showing people having sex on TV. That shit belongs on Cinemax, not TBS. But I have no problem with showing nudity on NBC or Comedy Central, if it's done in a way that doesn't show people how to have sex (as if teenagers need a guide; even younger kids can Google whatever they want) and isn't there just to get people to watch the show ("Gonna see some tits, fuck yeah!").
Kids having sex = bad
Kids knowing what breasts and penises look like = okay
Besides, doesn't every TV now have the V-chip or whatever inside of it? Parents can block shows with certain material just like they can block websites with certain material. Do we really need to be censored?
Then again, if nudity and/or sex were allowed on television, we'd probably have nothing but shows about tits, asses, dicks, and fucking. We already have too many shows about dating as it is.

I agree with K-1 on this. Although honestly, I think the core of this problem is the idea that "people exposed to bad things turn out bad and people not exposed to bad things turn out good." IMO, if anything should be banned from children's media, it should be moderate/extreme violence. But even then, simple exposure to violence does not compel one to commit it, but exposure which ignores the consequences of violence does reduce sensitivity to it.
I'm an avid gamer, I would really prefer it if more games forced you to look at the consequences of violence/murder. It really bothers me when I see kids in single digits playing games like Halo and nonchalantly talking about who killed whom as if the scores all that matters.

You reminded me of something - the disparity in violence shown on TV.
Primetime TV shows a lot of violence, even on the basic channels, and most people don't seem to have a problem with it, though it's not hard for a little kid to stay up to 8pm to watch the violent stuff. At the other end of the spectrum, shows aimed toward kids tend to be devoid of any violence whatsoever. Even the action shows meant for 10-12 year olds have no blood, no death, sometimes even no punching or real damage. There's a reason a lot of teenagers consider anime as something for grown-ups, because in American culture, the shows meant for kids are watered-down and simple. Compare the violence in Naruto to the violence in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for example.
Why are we okay with decaying carcasses, semen-filled corpses, decapitated bodies, etc. at 7pm, but when it's 3pm, there cannot be even a drop of blood or someone punching someone else shown?

This thread makes me think of the "When you know you are an adult?" thread since like all of the posts I've read sound like something discussed at PTA meetings and stuff parents talk about.
From what I've seen yeah there is a glaring hole between violence and nudity on TV. Its not really important to me personally though. Its not like they dont learn about both sex/nudity and violence/gore from anywhere else. Internet and school do an excellent job of that. Somehow the media turns a blind eye to that. As for myself I remember watching Barney then I stopped and switched to cartoons (1st grade area) and not too long after that I discovered the girls gone wild ad's on TV at like 5am. I didnt die and I do wish the two were at least treated equally.

I live in France, and weapons are hard to buy, you must get a gunpermit from the police to be allowed to buy one. They check all types of datas about you and ll find you in no time if a murder happens near your city.
Here films with over-violence are banned and the only violent show on Tv is the american-catch emissions.
Kids are loving catch in Europe (brainless kids) they buy the golden belt, the stickers and fight at school.
I remember that in march a girl(14) was killed by his brother(14) after being blowed several times in front of all his mates. Was just horrible, he just did it because she was tricking some boys.
Anyway, the superior authorities who censor or limit nudity/sexuality I think, just want a world where sin and lasciviousness is hidden away from children.
We can t solve that violent-movies producers now have money to release infinity of films, and the "hot" movies producers can only sell this to adult american, european people who are (thanks to credit cards) able to pay.
Billions of dollars are fighting thousand ones ...

I like America is one of the most uptight nations when it comes to nudity, and yet we produce the majority of the worlds porn. Irony huh?

Because most adults don't realize kids are smarter than they actually are. They believe seeing a naked breast will taint their innocent minds for life. Lack of sexual education doesn't help either. I used to be neighbors with a kid who didn't know ANYTHING about the human body. It was depressing to see.

Yeah yeah necrobump but its related to this thread (and the censorship thread).
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/bits/2011/10/11/porn-to-be-opt-in-only-with-uk-s-biggest-is/1
(The Guardian article in first link)
(PCPro article at bottom of 1st link page)
To summarize what the articles are saying. Britain is trying to cut back on kids seeing porn. The government is obviously playing a big role in this. Essentially the four biggest ISP's have agreed to block porn and other "adult content". There are a couple of articles saying it will be blocked by default and anyone who wants it will have to opt out and other articles saying people will have to opt-in for it to work.
It doesnt seem like it will affect torrents and other downloads though.
I find it pretty sad that ISP's may actually be doing more parenting than parents. I'm not a parent (nor do I want to be one) but I spend all of my time working on one thing or another (or reading manga). If a 10 or 11 year old lived with me and I didnt want him/her watching porn on a computer I would be smart enough to use the parental controls that came with windows.
If I didnt want to or know how to do that then I would just tell the kid about porn, sex, whatever. By the time the kid is looking for pornhub he/she is probably well aware what sex is. Its true that a like 4 or 5 year old could stumble across adult content but I would imagine the child would say something like "mommy daddy look what I found!". And for goodness sake a 4 or 5 year old shouldn't be online without an adult nearby anyways.
So in short its just total failure on the part of general parents that something like this even became a good idea.
1. Who decides what is "adult" and what is not? Who knows?
2. Depending on answer to 1. Will sites get wrongly filtered? Probably
3. Is it censorship? I say yes if its an opt-out deal.
4. Will kids who want to see porn still see porn? Probably. It shouldnt be hard to torrent porn.
5. Will this be a total waste of time and money? For the most part yes.
6. Will the general public of parents become better parents? Ha. There's a one line joke
What do you think of this and those 6 questions?
