What the hell happened to Customer Service?

Neh, I was just confused is all, what you mentioned was by my personal (The worker side of me) definition rude.
Not to say that you were in the right or wrong, just saying that if you were in their position, would you really put up with it? Particularly if your job wasn't on the line.
On that same note, the ONLY reason workers put up with some of the weirder customers, is because they'd lose their job otherwise xD

Instead of agreeing to help I would have told them they needed to speak to my manager and I would get that person(s) for them. I wouldn't agree to something that might jeopardize me in anyway.
I almost pseudo accomplished that anyway. I was the Frozen stocker at my Wal-mart one day and I was already behind my times for that day. I'm trying to rush my way through only to be stopped by a customer who was becoming rather irate by the fact that we didn't have any stock of his favorite type of Popsicle. I knew chances were good we didn't have any in the backroom otherwise they would have been on my pallet, but I went back anyway to appease him. Sure enough there weren't any left in the stock room or in overstock.
Just so happened one of my managers went down my aisle when I was looking for this guy's Popsicle. She was rather upset that I wasn't in my aisle when I shouldn't have been on break. I told her what I was doing. She knew very well she couldn't really do anything about it because I am supposed to do that for customers, but at the same time she didn't bother to dock that ten or so minutes from my time either. Not to mention I had to refreeze my current pallet of frozen items because I had it out for over fifteen minutes and you aren't allowed to do that. Bah. That night was a nightmare.

Woo!Not exactly on topic, but for once I felt like a justified, albeit bitchy customer, today.
I was shopping at Meijer, which for those of you who don't live in the Midwest, United States, it is essentially a superstore like Wal-Mart that sells both general merchandise and grocery. It was after midnight and I had a huge cart full of groceries and other miscellaneous items. Well, after midnight Meijer stores close all of their register and only activate their self-checkouts lanes. Well, I hate those damn things. A cashier is there for a damn reason. I may have worked in retail, but I've never been a cashier and I have no intention of checking myself out unless I'm getting paid for it.
I was already in a bad mood, so I went up to one of the workers and asked if she could please open a register because I didn't want to have to check myself out using a register. She said she could not do it because she was responsible for manning the computer that monitored the self-checkout. I told her fine and asked if she could get another employee to do it for me. She said no because the rest of them were on break or were stockers. At this point I admit I was getting shitty. I told her I know that some of your stockers are trained on register, and told her to please get one of those people. She refused so I told her I demand to see a manager. She gave me the most pissed off look and shittingly said "One moment, please." So, the manager showed up, apologized and took the register herself, but I could tell she wasn't happy.
But dammit I don't care. Self-checkout is so stupid. I think it is fine for stores to have those, but they should always only be complementary to normal check-out lanes. The fact that they only have one cashier up front who takes care of self-checkout is unacceptable.
Damn I felt so justified pissing them off. >.>
^might want to edit this so you don't sound like such a dick.

I think this may actually be more of a problem with more densely populated areas, but I can't really speak for everywhere. In my own personal experience, smaller (and quieter) towns haven't seemed to take away from their emphasis on personal, quality, customer service. Then again, I may have just been lucky with my own shopping experiences.

Sometimes Fpod and I would end up grocery shopping really late at night, and we go to Kroger. Usually the same guy is working there and he monitors the self check out. It's really not possible to check out with a lot of groceries at the self checkout because it requires all your groceries to be on the scale to make sure you're scanning everything you set in the bags.
He'd usually open one register, but we always told him to take his time since he had to balance his monitoring to the self check out and then to us. So we'd get all our groceries on the conveyer, by then he'd be able to come over, and he'd scan and we'd bag - that way things got done faster, but he never minded and was always pleasant with us.
But I would have been mad at you too Tsurayu lol... it's not the girl's fault, as she's just trying to follow the rules.

I believe the customer always comes first at my job. There's a fine line that few people rarely cross that will get them thrown out of the store. Basically I want to threated with the same respect that I give you when you walk through the door, and if you won't do that because of some situation then you just don't get my respect anymore. Someone called my store manager an "asshole" one day because the gentlemen wanted to do a return with a credit card number on a piece of paper and my store manager said we just couldn't do that. My store manager is pretty awesome because he kept his cool with the guy, but he did not bend for the gentlemen.
There are too many people out there looking to do something illegal and fraudulent to abide by "the customer is always right" anymore. It's really sad.

It isn't as though I told the manager that the girl was refusing to open a lane, or find someone to open a lane. I just asked her to please open a lane because I had a full cart and didn't feel like having to wait in line at one of only two self-checkouts open.
At least the manager didn't bother arguing with me and just opened the lane we happened to be talking in and took the register herself.
I wouldn't take back what I did because I've stayed silent several times despite how much I dislike self-checkout only aisles being open after midnight. I was in a foul mood, and I had enough.

I agree with all those "because were in a recession" posts
people are forced in on jobs they hate, of course there not going to be all jolly with you

Oh I'm sure if I looked at it objectively I would, and I'm sure most people would say they wouldn't take it back even if they feel regret about it now or later.
I might very well be one of them, but then I have to think that if no one ever complains about it despite how many people are upset by the idea, there is no way Meijer will ever stop doing it.
It is almost funny how they seem to wonder why they don't get as much third-shift business as the Wal-mart across the street from them despite the fact that for the first time in over fifteen years they've had competitive prices with Wal-mart. It's like rest assured your third-shift service has something to do with that. -_-
