Working our youth away?
Work, or Play?

Hey guys, so i was getting criticized by my mom again today for not being prepared for the real world and she was telling me i need to start working full time now and preparing for school in order to plan for my future. I have the idea though, that as an 18 year old, i should be more focused on living my life to the fullest while i still can before i have to start getting a 9-5 job; and its something i want to do before i basically work my life away for a pension check when im 60. but my question is, do any of you share the same idea with me? I just feel as if i will regret not living out my youth when i look back on my life when i have recieved my pension check and an unable to do the things i could when i was 18.
Basically my poll is asking whether you think its best to spend your youth preparing for the rest of your life, getting a job, spending years in school so you can succeed when you are older. Or, to take a step back from the industry and business world we live in and actually get a chance to take in all of the things around you and enjoy the time you have as a young adult. keep in mind though that this question is based around living as a young adult, since its pretty irrational to do as a working man/woman but could apply i guess if possible.

What is a 9-5 job? I work two split shifts several times a week for this world conglomerate. Sometimes, I have to be at work at 1am to see how the overseas markets open up; then I go home at 5am. Be at work at 10am leave at 230pm.
9-5 job good luck in finding one!

You are right about enjoying your youth while you can, but you are also at an age where you need to start thinking about your future.
Basically the longer you wait/play, the harder/longer you need to work later on in order to be able to have a decent pension.
You should also remember that even when you have a career, your life is not over, you can still play, have fun, and live life to its fullest (plus you will have more money to do so)

Listen, I owe $80,000 (reasons not important ATM), I can't play even if I wanted to. Working is an important part of life, everything cost money, you can't depend on your parents for the rest of your life (unless your rich lol). It wasn't until my mom kicked me out until I learned to value of a dollar. So IMO I thinks its better to work when your young, so you understand a little better how expensive the real world is.

If I had my way, I would love to sit at home, watch anime and play video games all day. Instead I'm in college, working, and living on my own with my boyfriend. My goal is to just keep working hard so I can enjoy my later years with any success I made while growing up.
Think of it this way, as youth we have the energy to work hard, and when we get older if we made ourselves successful - we can sit back and relax and do the things we wanted to do.

I've thought about what you're saying Mr.nockers, but in a different way. I think of the many kids across the planet that spend the majority of the day in school and then do homework for several hours after school, and I wonder why it has to be that way. I understand that it's easier to learn when you are young, and each person should know certain things before they reach adulthood, but it seems like a waste of youth. Even if you have all the free time in the world when you're old, it's not the same as having the time when you're young. I know the educational system in America sucks, horribly, but when I think of children not having to spend 12 hours a day studying or doing schoolwork, I'm actually kind of glad that our educational system isn't as strict as other countries. Does that make sense to anyone?
I think people should try to work towards their future goals when in high school and their late teens, but at the same time, I think they should also enjoy life as much as they can. Getting a full-time job at 18, and staying with that job for a couple of decades without a real break seems like a wasted life. You're supposed to be a full-grown adult at 18, able to take care of yourself, but that's just not right. At 18, you're still growing, still learning, still making a hell of a lot of mistakes.
I suppose my ideal would be to have each person go through high school and college without working, except for perhaps a part-time job or internship, and after they graduate college, they get into the "real world," as it is often called. Of course, that is a very hard thing to do. It relies on supportive, loving parents (who also have a bit of money), and a child with a desire to learn and not be selfish. (Just about every person in my high school with a job only had it so they could buy shit they wanted.) As for the "experience" that one is supposed to gain by having a job, that would be learned by doing chores around the house. I think knowing how to vacuum and cook is more helpful than knowing how to ask a person if they want fries with their burger.

Realistically, and logically busting your ass as a young adult to get your schooling paid, student loans, graduating college, etc is the best option in the long run. On a personal level, I disagree with working (as much as we humans do) as a whole.
Though, I suppose if your dream of playing is fuckin' sprinting up Mt. Fuji barefoot with only a banana hammock on you are not going to be doing that at the sweet ol' retired age of 65.

Are we talking about playing games and watching anime all day? Or are you talking about having some life experiences you can tell your kids about, like backpacking through Europe?
I think a young adult should get the opportunity to do something that will shape themselves in a positive manner for the rest of their lives. Playing video games until your in your twenties before getting a job isn't exactly a productive way to spend your youth.

I personally mean giving yourself a life experience, but honestly it is completely up to somebody to decide how they spend their free time. but i would have to say doing something that will create and experience for themselves.
And i completely agree with working something like a part time job to have a balance of both, but unfortunately for many people, myself included the options given to me are either go to school full time, or work full time; there is no option in between that. i just feel that there is a lot more to living the only life your given than spending it working in your office, or whatever your job is. you only get 1 life why not live it to the fullest is my opinion i guess

Working gives you freedom, lets admit it. 18 years and you're still living off 24/7 from your mother's wallet? Geez, no wonder she insist that you work.
It's just a similar case towards studying. it starts of early, you'll want to study hard, suffer for these couple of years, get a kickass job and retire happy.
Earning your own money is part of growing up, you being 18 and seeing no sense in it is something you'll have to start questioning yourself. what's living your life when you're still young? Chill out with your buddies? Playing Warcraft? Or simply just lazing around your room blasting heavy metal?

^I like the way Ziggy looks at it!!
So yeah, I'm will to put my youth aside for work ( i still find time to goof off). I mean once i am retired i will have plenty of time to catch up on the thing i wanted to do!

It is all in the planning. I work an average of 60 hours a week and earn 5 hours of comp time. This used for mostly vacation time or if I have a rough time in a tournament I use it for sick time. Leaving work at 5am; some days straight home ( I own a condo) or go to this Grill and Bar get breakfast (eggs/bacon or steak and two guinness stouts). Then sleep then go back to work.
On my free time: I play Madden 10; watch anime or hentai; peruse through FAKKU and the internet, run 5 miles once or twice a week also 50 wind sprints or swim 1800 yards; after practice on wednesday drink beer chase women (try to get laid). I go to six tournaments a year basically to play but find women. Percentage completion of getting laid about 2%
I sleep 5 to 8 hours a day but not at once. My job makes it hectic but my parents, siblings and some friends tell me I play too much. I have my student loans paid off and keep my credit cards at a respectable level. I own 1998 Ford Taurus. I own 30k comic books mostly Marvel. Yes, sometimes I go crazy but not sniper crazy.
I have pussy in bed with me almost everynight. That is Lucy the cat; you know the one with four paws and purrs.
You can work and if you plan half assly you can play.

I agree mostly. No matter what you tell yourself, there's no guarantee you'll even live to see the elder scrollspaychecks. So putting things off until 'then' is potentially them off 'forever'.

Well i can see where your coming from and you probably work alot, seeing as you never answer your texts lol.
But I would love the opportunity to work as much as you do, So i can earn money and possibly get into college and find a nice career so your mom is right on that point i suppose.
But on the other hand, she cant tell you how you rule your life, and i know cuz she has tried that on me.
Work is good so you can prep up to the real world, but when it comes down to it, We need to also have fun with our lives, Go backpacking in Malaysia and enjoy what left of our minature adulthood before we turn into "adults" and actually work all day for a pension.
I for one would love to work as much as you, but take the time to stop and smell the roses along the way ya know? And everyone that works hard should do that.
I hate working, but i need to in order to survive.
I hope i wasnt rambling too much, just figured id give my two cents.

Im on a free ride to college, so I dont really need to work for another 4 years. After college, I plan on getting a high paying job and working my ass off for a few years, then retiring and living a pretty relaxed life of traveling.

Im pretty sure any career takes alot more than "a few years" to earn enough cash to retire early in life.
If you find one though, make sure to let us know.
