There are many good MMORPGs coming out this year actually, I'm not sure what's a really good mmorpg atm though. The two that I'm waiting for are:
Aion: Tower of Eternity (It may have a subscription fee) and Guild Wars 2.
IMO I don't recommend you get into until you take a look at other MMORPGs. For a list of MMORPGs try looking through this, Wiki. I haven't checked this list thoroughly yet, but I'm pretty sure you"ll get some good information out of it.

Try RO--Ragnarok Online. I've suggested this to many people innumerable times. RO is so awesome because you don't have to pour your life into it, and every on it loves Anime. Find a private server, though, that way you don't have to pay.

I play EVE online, its kinda a cool spaceships game, quite different to most other mmorg's
Its supposed to be set in a cold dark world, where anything goes, in other games if you scam someone out of there money, you can expect a GM to come along and pwn you, in Eve its ,you were smarter than they were you keep it.
Theres plenty to do, whether you want to get involved in alliance politics out in null sec space (alliances in EVE tend to have hundreds if not thousands of pilots), become a pirate in low sec space, and gank anyone stupid enough to get close to you, or if you prefer you can do mining/industry and just supply the ships and guns that the PVP'rs need constantly.
PVP is pretty hard core though, if your ship gets blown up who ever shot you down gets to take your stuff, so only fly things you can afford to lose is the order of the day, there are safe(r) areas of space, where attackers will get wtfpwnd by npc police ships, but as in real life, they often arrive too late to stop the attack and can only punish attackers after they have killed you.
It is however incredibly complicated, and you will feel like you have been thrown in at the deep end on starting, skill training (leveling up) is done in real time, so you dont need to play for long to skill up.

Ok, Why not phantasy star online(pso). This game is rather addictive though if you play episode one it is repetive and can be tough, but there are some sweet features.
1. at the highest lobbies there a game you can play thats like soccer but unforetunately i no longer know what its called
2. the people who play (including GMs) this usual dont care if you use hacks. just dont go to the server that will imply that they play legit(they're mostly snobs)
3. a ton of neat/funny gimick equipment like a chao on a stick (weapon)
4. has an PvP setup
5. there are some private servers
This one isn't a mmorpg or mmog (per-say), but what you do if what you choose. If your aware of vg emulation this could be something worth looking into. It called kaillera and its a feature certain emulators(or versions of some emulators) have. Basic it lets you chat while playing your roms online. The nice thing about is that if the rom use is a multiplayer game you'll be able play them with people all over the world.
If anyone is interested i'll post a topic about this later this week and i'll try to showing up on the irc. If you dont want to hear it from me, google it.

Mabinogi goes Open Beta on the 5th. I was in pre-open beta, which lasted two days and it was pretty fun.
Combat is based on a rock, paper, scissors deal. Normal attack>smash>defense. Counter attack beats both normal and smash attacks, consumes alot of stamina.
It's not grindy, exp comes rather fast. As you level you gain a certain amount of AP, which is used to learning and upgrading skills. You learn skills by buying books and doing "Advanced reading" or by talking to npcs, who will teach you the skill for free.
There are 3 types of skills. Combat, Magic, and Life. You can guess what combat and magic are. Life skills are every day life things, like resting, campfire, composing music, playing instrument, ect ect. I sat all of last night just composing anime songs and some japanese music. Ran past someone who was playing hare hare, lol.

But seriously...play World of Warcraft. It isnt the greatest game I've ever played, but it's the most balanced, best run MMO out there. And I bet you know at least 3 people who play, which means everyone knows someone to play with.
