Silent Hill...one of the very few video games that I can think of that was actually scary. Resident evil for me wasn't really scary but don't get me wrong I love those as well. Silent Hill is very different from most horror games and it's extremely graphic and disturbing. What set it apart from most other horror games was the exploration of a fog filled town, trying to get to your objective with very few ressources and weaponry. Your alone in almost every game, almost all the time. You rarely encounter anyone and when you do, you can immediatly tell that they most aren't completely sane...
As the series aged and progressed through time, there were some things that changed for the worse and somethings that kept being repeated and made the series somewhat predictable now. In all games except the 4th, you have a radio which emits static sounds whenever enemies are nearby. That means that you know when to expect to be attacked, which to me removed some of the fear unlike in RE where there were more then a few instances where you were suddenly and unexpectidly attacked. Some of the levels were re-used over and over in some games, so once you memorized it, you didn't have too much of a problem in the next game. All in all though, it is a series that no horror fan should miss and nowadays if you find a copy of any of these games there most likely gonna be around 10-15$. I highly recommend them (except the 4th, which I hated)

I second that. Though I believe that the second has the best in terms of storyline, 3 is just all around great. It was the most scariest and fucked up one of them all and despite what some people say I didn't think the controls were that bad. People generally complain about how you couldn't take on more then one enemy at a time...<_<
It's a freaking horror game, bent on scaring the shit out of you, your not some fucking rambo or sumin like that lol...all the main characters weren't fighters except the guy in the 5th.
But yea overall 3's the best for me

Exactly.
I haven't played the 5th, but I heard it was kinda actiony, I really wouldn't know though, which made me kind of lose interest in the game. Silent Hill is all about those tense, terrifying, and helpless moments. Every character is a regular person trying to figure what the hell is happening in this world, you're no weapons expert.

I've only played the PC version of SH2, but I loved it entirely. It was incredibly creepy in its atmosphere and the gameplay was rock-solid. Plus, the system requirements are almost nonexistent.

Call me crazy but I really enjoyed the pacing of Silent Hill 4 and found the themes resonated deeply with me. Don't hate me for it.

Music was good in it, but the gameplay just wasn't silent hill...all the levels had light, so there was no need for the flashlight. I found the "charge up to attack" combat style terrible and even more frustrating then the other silent hill's. Plus, most of the game your not even IN silent hill...so I have no idea why it's called that.

I think it was not originally a Silent Hill game at the planning stage. People would have liked it more had it been a stand alone game...maybe I just liked peeping into the next room ;)

True. It wasn't initially supposed to be a silent hill game. But I did like the claustrophobia idea of being trapped in your appartement. That was definitly something new and fun. If it wouldn't have been called silent hill 4 and if they'd had taken the time to correct the combat system a little bit, it coulda been something far better
