I can't believe anyone hasn't said it yet but Cloud Strife was a badass, I think people just focus on vincent to avoid the Cloud Strife bandwagon. Cloud found his identity and filled into the role of leader. Plus, he was the one who fought sephiroth.

Hmm... My answer is somewhat elongated, I've played many games with great characters and therefore find picking just one a touch difficult... Oh well, keep in mind that it's actually just one of my fav's:
Boomerang (Flash) from Wild Arms, he is a recurring opponent in the game, obsessed with battle but with a code if honour.

It's a little hard to say my truest pick of the litter, by my choice is the main character from "Lucifer's Call/Nocturne" (PS2).
--Why? Because he killed gods, stood his own against Dante and turn the entire earth back to normal, all while his lover is sacrificed and his only two friends turn against him.
Alone, against demi-fiends, demons, and false gods, this nameless MC is a true badass

I personally don't like Cloud much, but FF7 did hint that he made it with Tifa. The scene with them lying under the Highwind, after it and they are approached by one of your party members (I forget which one it is for this hint) Tifa says "You saw us?!" and her and Cloud both blush. Normally it says "You heard us?!" with no blushing, but if you do something with Tifa earlier in the game (forgot what again, been awhile since I tried for this seen) it goes to that isntead. Implying he and Tifa had some outdoor sex.

There are plenty of iconic characters with many great games to their name: DK, Mario, and Link to name a few, but none of them really have anything more than a surface personality in the games. From a character standpoint, I have to say my favorite is Old Snake from MGS4.
He doesn't have a ton of memorable quotes, but I really empathized with him a lot. Even so, just the little things he does in the game-groaning while executing a difficult maneuver, stretching out his sore back-really fill out his character.
The fatalistic hero aspect of his character really resonated with me, especially since it was such a change from the common archetypes of the upcoming kid, the stoic, the dark hero with the mysterious/messed up past, etc(and, of course, who wants to be an old man with no sword? Not cool guys.) He was old and in a lot of ways didn't want to be there. No one really believed in him anymore. For the most part, he was a used part in a machine. But at the same time, there was no other choice than to do what he did. It was the only thing left to give him any meaning in his life. Old Snake really pulled me into the story, along with the possibility that even if he won, it would really be everyone but him who got to enjoy the happy ending he spent his life fighting for. And there were some intense sequences in that game. Amazing.
man, very nicely said, but i must disagree with the quites, he has many great ones!:
"A survelance camera?!?"
"Damn!"
"LIIIQQUQIIIIDDDD!!!!!"
"I'm no hero, never was, just an old hit hired to do some wetworks."
"eeeehhh, thats a few, cant think of more.
but i would have to say ocelot...he's kinda mysterious in the way that you dont know what he's up to, but hes a good man and i love his little hand gesture!

Gonna have to say Isaac from Dead Space. Gotta give him credit for fighting a shit load of nercomorphs while repairing a ship at the same time all by himself.

Need I say more? He's taken down Gods & Titans. Died, Killed faith itself, escape from Hades twice. And he knows how to fuck someone up. While being...mortal
I hate to rain on everyone elses parade, but, Kratos is the end all be all killer of video games. take any hero or villain, from any video game, and he will kill them not only quickly, but mercilessly.
Kratos is the one video game character who has trumped all of his enemies at every turn. i mean come on, hes already died TWICE and lived to tell about it. he was the god of war, waged war on Zeus, and KILLED the sisters of fate. whens the last time any other character has destroyed reality for their own gain? Kratos like him or not, is the best video game character out there, mainly because of his sheer brutality, and ability to survive all odds.

It doesn't matter to Kratos if you are god mode-ing. He'll kill you anyway.
