Final Fantasy 11

I've played just about every Final Fantasy out there except this one. To those who have played it, do you think its worth the monthly subscription when there are so many nicer MMO's out there that are free?
On a slightly different note, does anyone know if there are any free servers out there for this game? I couldn't find much.

As one friend once told me
"You either get a girlfriend and a job, or play FFXI. There's no way you can do both."
I've heard the grinding is horrible in this game.

I definitely wouldn't play the game now. It's been out for so long, and so many other, more popular games have come out. I'm pretty sure there's next to no one left in the game. Imagine, an MMORPG with no players. I wonder if the hardcore players get lonely.

As fun of a game as it was, I wouldn't play it now. Everyone is at max level trying to get all the best gear in the game and being a new player you dont have 3-5 jobs at max level. That being said you wouldn't be useful a endgame group without a large time sink. Back in the day everyone was low level so everyone could level to 75 together and because it was so hard to get that way many people quit. Because of that the servers have a real community everyone knows everyone. New people are not welcomed very easily nor can they find help easily.
It was worth playing a few years ago but now unless you have a job at max level theres no point in wasting your time.
I just quit this game yesterday after playing for 5-6years since the 8th grade.

Hmmm... my honest opinion would be to try the free trial, and see for yourself, than make a decision from there. I would wait for FFXIV though.

The most annoying part about this game is finding a party. If you're not a healer, then you won't find a party easily. It could take hours trying to get into a party.
On that note, Guild Wars was exactly the same. Horrible to find a party if you can't heal.

Actually that is not true anymore with the new level sync system. Now it doesn't matter what level you are everyone can sync down to the lowest level in your party and because of that you can invite almost anyone. Making party's is alot easier now and xping is alot easier too since alot of jobs were buffed in the past years,

As an avid FFXI player with a healthy amount of endgame experience, I can say its one of the harder MMOs out there. Getting your first lvl 75 can take weeks, maybe even a month or 2 depending on how much time you put into it. Endgame is kind off hit and miss as well. Some things are requires an ABSURD amount of time (the strongest weapons in the game can take roughly 1-2 years worth of work). Toss in the notorious unkillable monster Absolute Virtue, there is much to be said on how bad it is.
I personally love the challenge. It makes things like getting to a certain lvl that much sweeter, or getting that one rare item that costs millions of gil and time is worth it. Also because of the amount of work you have to do, your friendships with other players is much stronger. I'm not saying you shouldn't try the game, but be prepared as the bar is set high in this game.
