Got into a discussion with a friend and was wondering about other people. I try to wait till the game is fully translated and then try to play the game without a walkthrough, only going to the walkthrough when i am looking for cg's or cant start someones route.
My friend is completly the opposite he plays as soon as a route is available, even the common route and strictly follows the walkthrough throughout the whole game.
So how do you play your visual novels.

If I "can't read Japanese", I'll be the type to play any route that's available. I rather play it little by little rather than waiting for the whole thing when you don't have any clear finish date.
But the truth is I don't need to wait anymore, since I already learned myself some Japanese. :P

I wait till the VN is fully translated before playing it, and yes I make extensive use of walkthroughs to get everything said VN has to offer.
Exceptions to this are those porn-heavy VN where you play just for the H-scenes.

I wait for it to translate, since I can't read Japanese, but I never use a walkthrough unless I'm stuck. Not even the spoiler-free ones.

I usually wait for the full translation to enhance the experience since I don't know jap.
However, in very rare cases I play partials.
Regarding the use of an walkthrough, I got the habbit of using one since I don't feel like I'm loosing experience. Of course, when I feel like it I don't use an walkthrough.

Usually if its fully translated or it has the routes I like in english, I took 3 years of japanese but I can only hear and speak, reading takes me forever to do so.

I could read Japanese good enough now so I don't wait for translations, and I strictly follow the walkthrough with some exceptions where I want to see the outcome of a certain choice.

For walktroughs, I don't really use it unless I want to complete the CGs. Because I want to really try to actually complete it without any guides. That's where I can gauge the difficulty of a VN.

Well I only care for the story, and while the choices always offer additional details, they're usually ignorable and kind of a waste of time to go through.

Of course, if it is obvious how things work I do not use a guide at all. If it is a point base system like ever 17, it is fairly easy to do without a guide but when it is something like clannad, where almost every choice matters, I use one.

I am currently feeling more confident with my japanese after 2 years of study and plan to attempt reading an untranslated one this christmas as a learning tool but that is another story.

For those difficult VN's I play until the frustration of not making any progress outweighs the fun from playing blind without a walkthrough. For most games you never need one. Exceptions would be ever17, getting to the ending of stein's gate, kagestu tohya, etc. Sometimes, when I never ever think I'll play a VN again, I will look at the flowchart of of curiosity.
Play every character, don't go for any 100% completions, though I do go for every non-trivial ending, using a walkthrough if needed.
I got to an intermediate level of Japanese, so I am just starting to read untranslated VN's with translators (the dictionary word look-up kind, not actual convert to english translation). I think I will still play translated VN's in english until I get much better: I feel like the extra effort is better spent on titles you wouldn't have otherwise been able to play.

I have only ever played english translated VN. This is only because every VN I wanted to play has been translated or is being translated. (Except Fate/Hallow is taking FOREVER)

I only play translated ones since i'm not a professional in japanese. I always do things my way but I make sure that after I get the route I've done thinking of my true choices i go back and do the opposite. Always make sure to make 100% of it @-@

i know japanese very little. The better thing is play Vn with greater pleasure, so no need to rush wait until fully translated.
A little advice from me who have experience the worse thing don't dare touch the manga, the anime that game title and the HCG before finish the Vn unless you prepare the worse thing.

I would rather play the ones that are already fully translated.
I usually don't use walkthroughs or guides unless it was a strategy/tactics/simulation game.
I would play a game to 100% if it gets me really engaged or the h-scenes are good, even if the game is not yet translated.
Sometimes, I would just finish one route and not play again, especially if I have to replay one half of the game and/or I happen upon a "meh" route.

I usually play fully translated ones, (tried using translators for a while, I got the gist but you lose alot with the software), I go from the girls I like the look o the most and go down, if there is a particular storyline I hate (rarely) I just leave it. I try not to use walkthroughs unless the game is hella long and i'm having trouble.

I play VNs that are fully translated. If I have time, I go through them word-by-word, but sometimes I just rape / grope the "ctrl" button and will just view the text log one I sensed that I might have missed something important.
I haven't used walkthroughs so far, but I think Imma use some if I feel like it wouldn't be finished without browsing a walkthrough
And "Brass Restoration" is badly translated, that's why I only finished one route before I deleted it. Just sayin'.
