I am quite tempted to purchase a Nintendo 3DS, especially when I read above its related reviews. However, since I am not very knowledgeable in games and consoles, may I enquire if any sort of internet subscription is required to connect with users worldwide, for example, members of Fakku on the other side of the world? Or am I limited only to the local area?
You can play anyone anywhere as long as you have access to wifi ,and the same game...though I suppose with the new region locking taking place it may now be a tad more limited than in the DS/DSL/DSi/DSXL era...I am playing old DS games ,and Street Fighter 3DS globally ,but future titles may be limited by region or what network they play on like demon souls JP not working on same network as demon souls US not allowing cross-region play unless ur using copies of the game with the same region coding(which due to the region locking would mean ud all have to have 3ds's from the same region as well)
TLDR; Will probably depend on game being played..some will work ,others will likely not.
here to add to this:
There are some games that have special modes in them [like Super Street Fighter 4] that can interact with other 3DS systems without needing the game in the system. SSF4's figurine mode data is saved onto the system and it will record any encounters you have in streetpass mode [you pass people who have a 3DS and information automatically exchanges]. You can then view the battle results when you put SSF4 in the system.
TL;DR you don't exactly need the same game in the system, just the same game save.
Regular DS game have kept the region free policy when playing on the 3DS, so yea a japanese or other import original DS game will work fine. However in regards to wireless play with original DS games you still have to connect to a compatible WEP or unencrypted connection. They can't use the new WPA/WPA2 options that the 3DS offers, only 3DS games can use that option.

The 3DS will eventually go back up in price since the real good games that will give it momentum aren't out yet. Gonna grab one of these before that happens.

As soon as I heard 'Ambassador' I was reminded of a pair of glasses with the nintendo logo on it that I used to own when I was 8-9. It was technically my first piece of gaming memorabilia.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NINTENDO-AMBASSADOR-KIDS-EYEGLASSES-FRAME-/290529424356
[super hard to get any nintendo branded glasses. Yes, there was more than one style they made]
All the other 'found' models [21 different frames were made]
They were made in small quantities and had a few other things with it. Made me think that the name of the 3ds program was like a little inside nintendo joke. lol so yea a little gaming trivia for the watercooler.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
OT: This is nice! very nice! Also, the most interesting part about the annoucement is near the end namely these two parts:
and...
So what the early adopters will be getting would be 'test' versions? If not, then what would the whole 'updated' thing imply? Possible that it might be a 3D classics kind of release. I mean, they are giving people Yoshi's Island then not releasing it to the general public so it doesn't seem too far out there.

Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.

Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 (GBA) games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

Even if you do get those 20 free games it still wouldn't be worth.. to me at least. And all of them are just rehashed being on the Ds.

I think I'll buy the 3DS when they release the 3DS LITE with better Battery life.
Also when more appealing games release, do I really need more rehashes?... When are new IP's Comming out for Nintendo... last one they had was probably Pikmen..

I have a hunch that the 3DS Lite won't be cheaper, that's why I'm grabbing this now. That's what happened with the DS -> DS Lite. There will be too many good titles.

According to Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, there will not be a compact version of the 3DS, due to it already being packed with the smallest technology they have at the moment. http://www.geek.com/articles/games/there-wont-be-a-3ds-lite-system-is-fully-packed-from-the-start-20110131/
Nyko released a battery that improves playtime of the 3DS, at the expense of being bulkier. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/03/heavy-black-rubber-testing-nykos-third-party-3ds-battery.ars

He says there will not be a revision coming "short-term". He doesn't mean it will never come. As better technologies come out they will be able to make a new version with better battery life.
After all, the 3DS has a 1300mAh battery. You can already mod it yourself to get a 2000mAh battery.
