Nintendo is in trouble

February 28, 2013 by Dan Hoyt
I hate to say it, but Nintendo is in trouble. I’m saying this as a fan of Nintendo so it’s even harder for me to admit. There is plenty of logical reason’s why I could argue that they need to work on some stuff, but I would like to tell you the worst sign that they may have a serious problem on the way.
Last fall my younger brother asked for an Xbox 360 for Christmas. My brother, who has owned every Nintendo system ever, wanted an Xbox 360 instead of the new Wii U. My brother would rather own an eight-year-old console that originally launched in 2005 than the new Wii U that was released in 2012. Think about that.
He’s actually stuck by the Wii until now. He bought one fairly early on in its cycle and has quite a collection of games. Unfortunately, after years of jealously watching all the other super fun games being released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, he looked at the roster for the Wii U and said, “no more.” Most of what he saw was more of the same and he has had his fill of Nintendo.
“I feel like I’ve missed so many games over the past few years,” he said. “I used to really like playing games and watching shows like X-Play, but now it’s actually kind of sad when I see those shows and there are no games I could get.”
I think the final straw may have been last year when he played From Dust at my house. I told him the game cost around $15 and I could tell there was a tiny moment of despair as he realized this same game would probably have cost much more than that on his Wii and would have required a disc. Showing him how I could download all these excellent games and keep them on my hard drive had to be a little annoying.
“One of the things I like about going to your house is being able to play video games,” he said. “Isn’t that just ridiculous? I have a Wii and I go to your house because you have real video games. Like when I play Call of Duty on the Wii and then play it on your Xbox it feels like a cheap knock-off or something like that.”
He joked about how it would be nice to just shoot people in one of his games. I bought him Mad World for his birthday when it was first released and while he admits that it was good, it would’ve been nice if he felt like there were more games for adults for him to choose from. Creative platformers has kind of been his staple for a while and when Nintendo launched with a Rayman title he knew where this was going.
Oh yeah, and my Xbox 360 has the ESPN app for no reason other than it just does. He’s clearly very angry that his Wii doesn’t even play DVDs.
“I heard the Wii U will play DVDs, which is just fucking stupid because the Wii could actually play DVDs if Nintendo would just allow us to. It has the player, but because Nintendo never put some kind of software on it, my Wii can’t play stupid DVDs. So, I have a Wii and a DVD player hooked up to my TV. How much sense does that make?”
He owns an Ipad, so a Nintendo version of a tablet doesn’t impress him either. Nintendo talks about maybe competing as the second console that gamers would have in their home, but that’s what a tablet is for. My tablet and my brother’s tablet both play a few really good games like Sid Meier’s Pirates!, so why would we need two consoles, a tablet and a PC?
Remake this game!
I’m sure Nintendo is going to sell a ton of Wii Us for the next few months. People will buy them, but what is going to happen when Sony and Microsoft roll out their next system? Sony released some information this past week about their new PS4 and it looks like they are going to make it much easier for developers to work with them. I’m sure Microsoft is going to do the same. Nintendo is going to be left, once again, making their own first-party games and developers are going to have even more incentive to flock to the PC, Xbox 360 and PS4. If Nintendo released one really unique game for the Wii U, (like Pokemon Snap utilizing the Wii U tablet!) I wouldn’t be so pessimistic, but I’m incredibly underwhelmed and so are most of the people I talk to.
Deep down I want Nintendo to keep amazing us with their games, but if they can’t get me and my brother excited enough about their new console to consider buying it, then they are in serious trouble. I have a Legend of Zelda themed Xbox Live gamertag and I’m not even interested in the Wii U! My brother represented the last bastion of my friends who was holding out on the potential that Nintendo has always had and now that he’s gone, who is left and who is going to be around next year when Nintendo has to compete with the next console cycle?

It's sad but not surprising
The SNES was the first system I bought using my grand mothers Christmas gift money
Nintendo has been slowly dieing of a painful death for more than a decade
Thanks to the major successes and impact that Xbox and PlayStation
have had in North America & Europe
It's time to pull the plug on the life support that is hardware Nintendo
Rethink your future and pursue a software only business model

First, I am not a Nintendo Fanatic, and second, my last Nintendo System was N64 (Nintendo 64).
I don't think the problem is the company, the systems or the games that it offers. I strongly believe that the problem resides within the customer who is not sure of what he really wants, and I refer to this statement:
In my humble opinion, saying that means that for him there are different types of games, say "real" and "no-real", which is completely BS in all honesty.
Nintendo has always been family-casual oriented, hell just look at the name of the very first system "Famicom" (Family Computer). It says by itself.
Your brother simply wants other kind of games that unfortunately Nintendo does not offer, but that does not mean Nintendo systems or games catalogue are bad, not by a long shot.
Although Nintendo may be in trouble because their systems are not offering more technological power, say like Microsoft or Sony, still offers a very high quality games, which the other systems can't really say or be proud of, such as GT PlayStatino Store openning from an Xbox. That was the first example that came to my mind. Of course Nintendo games have bugs, but their quantity and impact is very very tiny compared to the ones from Microsft and Sony.
The last time I checked some statistics Nintendo was still leading the market with its systems, don't know how it is by now, but I don't think that will make Nintendo tremble. Of course this is just my opinion and I can be totally wrong, so take it with a grain of salt.

Nintendo is the company that makes the most money out of the three, as they don't sell their systems at a loss, and their franchises are pretty much all multi-million sellers. Nintendo also has around 15-20 billion dollars in the bank and no debt, which is something Sony only can dream of, dunno how much MS is sitting on, nor if they have any debts though.
In conclusion, that article is fuckin retarded and Nintendo ain't going nowhere.
They have enough money to make non-profitable systems for another 30 years if they choose to.

Playing on Wii has its upsides, too. Though I do admit the games that it offers are way behind what XBOX360 and PS3 has to offer (like XBOX360 has the Forza series, the PS3 has the Gran Turismo series, and the Wii? Mario Kart Wii.)
XBOX has how many buttons and directional sticks? How about PS3's?
My point is, as long as there are people who wants to play and hang out with friends, but cant take the complicated controls, Nintendo is there to stay.
Also, just because his brother does not play Pokemon or Mario anymore does not mean nintendo should shut down its hardware production. If he really wanted an XBOX360 in the first place, then go ahead. Buy a fucking XBOX 360. No need to make other people feel bad of them owning a Wii.
As people grow up, their preferences are likely to change. The author overlooked this factor.

Nintendo is dying off because teens this days LOVE VIOLENCE GAMES Nintendo does not have much violence in it yes it has one of the best series Zelda is one of it and Super Smash Bros AWESOME but that is all the violence that they have in there own francis.
Other francis are for the kids like Mario and Kirby, which kids we all know is control by parents when kids want to buy it parents says "NO" kids has no choice but to listen.
By the time they grow up and work not much people has the kid in them to buy Nintendo product that is how Nintendo is dying off

This is retarded.
Nintendo is nowhere near "dying". If something Nintendo is earning more money than ever, and the Wii is one of the best selling consoles ever made, the Wii-U might have been of to a slow start, but that will probably change.
What someone can argue is whether Nintendo has been overlooking their "hardcore" fanbase(if they ever had one) or not.

I've been hearing doomsday criers since the N64 era. So far nothing has come of it.
Sure Nintendo's Wii U has had an abyssal launch in terms of sales figures, but I wouldn't say they're exactly "dead". The 3DS has surpassed PS3 sales and is dominating the Vita, the DS is the best handheld/console sold surpassing ps2 sales and in it's first month the Wii U sold more than the PS3 and xbox360's launches. People need to realize that most launches won't surpass current gen consoles so early in it's life. One of Nintendo's biggest problems is the lack lack of "good" or wanted Nintendo games. ZombiU was fun, and I'm looking forward to Monster Hunter, but they need more 3rd party support, and better games from Nintendo themselves, sure Pikman seems pretty cool right now, but it's not even out yet and people want more.
Maybe things will turn around after the new Super Smash brothers game gets a released date.

We bought all three consoles PS3, the 360 and the wii.
Most used console would be the 360 followed by the PS3.
We barely touch the Wii. Only when there are family gatherings will we put the Wii on use as it liked by most adults and kids plus it's easy to use.

While I will admit that the PlayStation 3 has more fun exclusives (and the 360 has Minecraft), the Wii has some fun games in it. It's just that most of them don't use the motion control stuff or just has it there because that's the Wii's (supposed) selling point.
However, it easily crushed the other two consoles in sales when it was out, so I expect the Wii Nii to sell well.
Also, I feel the urge to post this:

While I barely use my Wii andymore since I got my PS3.
My 3DSXL definitely gets a lot use. All I seem to use my Vita is Youtube since it works closest to actual Youtube.
I wouldn't mind if Nintendo stopped making home consoles so they could focus more on making handheld titles.

I agree they've hit some hard times but I don't see them dying off anytime soon. With the major succes the Wii and DS had over the last few years, Nintendo made billions over that time. And even though they are starting to post negative profits these losses(hundreds of millions) are nowhere near the same magnitude as their previous gains. So even though Nintendo's previously winning formula of, making a console with great first party titles and then when it becomes popular enough charge royalties from third party developers to use their hardware, isn't working they can go on like this for years to come, maybe even decades.
-side note-
Part of me hopes Nintendo stays in the hardware buisness because all of their really good franchises are so good in part because they are custome made for their hardware.

Imho nothings wrong with Nintendo. The Wii U did start off slow but that may pick up this year. If anythings in trouble, its todays generation of kids that always want to see hardcore games like CoD and others. I own every Nintendo console and I have to say that im not dissapointed with the Wii U cause I know what im going to expect. Im also not dissapointed with the 3DS because of the good amount of software titles they have to offer...compared to my Vita which is collecting dust at the moment. But seriously, Nintendo is fine. Even when Sony and Microsoft release their new systems, Nintendo will still be in good shape. Also, lets not forget that when the new Smash Bros game comes out, Wii U and 3DS sales are gonna sky rocket.
Oh and I also find the article funny. Just because one kid decided to not get the Wii U means that Nintendo is in trouble. His fucking lost, not theirs.

Sony has been in deep shit for a while and he's saying Nintendo is dying off?
Oh that is rich.
The main reason why Nintendo still stays relevant in today's market of video games is imagination. What happened with the Wii? It had only slightly better graphics than a Gamecube, has only 1 joystick and 6 buttons if you include the nunchuck. yet due to its motion controls sold an assload of consoles. heck Sony and Microsoft tried to copy its success with the Playstation Move and Kinect, both with limited success.
Now the Wii U has a touch-screen as well as a camera on it. People simply haven't used the hardware to its fullest yet. We can only anticipate what Nintendo can come up with, while with the new Playstation and Xbox consoles it's just better graphics. Same ol same ol, which isn't too interesting to me since PC games will always have better graphics anyways.
Meanwhile he's ignoring the fact that the DS and now the 3DS has dominated the handheld market.
Man, do people even think things through before making these kind of articles?

I wasn't even aware the Wii-U was out. Nintendo ain't dying anytime soon so long as there are casual gamers out there to buy their stuff.
