“As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename “NX.” It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”
Do you think it's a home console or a new handheld? (Personally I think it's a home hardware that will be released 2018 at the latest)
Do you think their concurrent announcement of them also dipping their toes in the mobile market will affect future handheld development?

No point to get excited yet cause all we have is a name. I will say around 2017 or 18 we will see it. Though I do wonder what it will contain. Right now I think you see consoles pushing it and they always want to add new technology, but what else is there to add? Both Sony and Microsoft are making VR systems for their current consoles so outside of VR what else is there? If it is just upgraded graphics and RAM why release a whole new console?

A Console that can be converted into a Portable Console, which games can be played cross-platform on among NX Console, NX Portable Console and NX Mobile Phone Adapter Software.
My 2 cent.
Also, NX, does it stand for "Next Generation" or "Nintendo Tenth"? X = 10 in Roman Numbers.

That's very interesting! I'm honestly hoping it's a new handheld, since Nintendo has just been making alterations to the base DS technology for the past 10 years. Nintendo just released the Wii U which has been anything but successful from a business standpoint.
I would love to see what Nintendo does with VR, and they would be stupid not to compete in the VR market considering how much momentum it has been gaining lately. Not to mention that Nintendo is all about creativity and things like the Oculus have limitless applications in that regard.

I stopped buying Nintendo products after the GameCube. Never owned a 3DS either.
That said, I'm interested to see what Nintendo brings to the table with this whole NX project. Personally, I think it will a new console probably surpassing the power of PS4 and XB1.

My personal idea would be that it might be something similar to the Wii U in terms of design but instead of a gamepad, it will have a pretty normal controller, along with a second "controller" that you can take with you with a screen with like a sd card or something to hold tinier versions of the games or something, that would be pretty awesome.
That is nothing more than what i would like to see though.

About the VR, do not get very excited about it.
It has gained a lot of momentum yes, but that is exactly its problem, it is rising expectations way too higher, and on top of that, on terms of consumer access to it, it is still a expensive product.
I am speaking from the PoW of a VR developer and I can see that there is a big difference (and risk) in just developing inhouse VR projects to try out the technology or engage on sakeholders, than developing a product for a market like games which will need the VR Kit, Console (Hardware whatever needed) and then the game itself.
Also, Virtual Boy anyone? Just saiyan. Hope they do not repeat the same mistake in case the jump on the VR Market.

It is my belief that it is a home console due to it being an announcement of an announcement the timeline that most plausable is this....
WiiU- 4 Years Old
3DS Family- 5 Years Old
Latest Refresh on the systems- N3DS 4 months ago
No info until next year and about another year and a half so it releases during a holiday buyers market would put both Nintendo generations at 6 1/2-7 1/2 years old so it could honestly be either but I wouldn't be surprised that it would be a new handheld line instead of home hardware

I dunno. Nintendo makes a lot of their sales from the handheld so I think it would be wiser for them to go that route.
A potential feature though that could occur.
Ability to link up to the TV via certain hardware.

“Your question also included the “current notion of thinking about home consoles and handheld devices.” When it comes to how dedicated game systems are being played, the situations have become rather different, especially between Japan and overseas. Since we are always thinking about how to create a new platform that will be accepted by as many people around the world as possible, we would like to offer to them “a dedicated video game platform with a brand new concept” by taking into consideration various factors, including the playing environments that differ by country. This is all that I can confirm today.”
“Taking this opportunity, because we were often asked if we will make any new announcements about NX, smart device applications or QOL at this year’s E3 show, let me confirm that we will not discuss anything about our smart device business or QOL there because, to us, E3 is an event mainly for dedicated video game systems. Also, because we have confirmed that any new information about NX will be announced in 2016, I hope you will understand that if you expect us to discuss NX during the upcoming E3 show, you will just end up being disappointed.”
