I have not played this game until recently because I do not like mech stuff. Boy, do I regret that. I should’ve played this game right when it came out. Alternative is a must play eroge for anyone. There is just so much in this game. I can’t say enough good things about this game. This game is a masterpiece.

Recommended for: People who want action, people who want military stuff, people who like mechs, people who want an awesome story, and anyone who can get their hands on this game.
Not recommended for: People who hate stories with bad tempo, people looking for ero, (longspear, for example) and people who can’t stand gore.

The patch translates 30% of the total text. The game uses quite a bit of cinematic flash style animation, so I can't say for sure if that correlates directly to 30% of the overall experience.

As for whether or not to play the first game... you probably should, but it's not for lack of understanding. It's more a case of the first game sets up a lot of mystery for you to wonder about, then Alternative comes and answers all of them. Or in other words, if you want to enjoy both games, play them in order, but if you don't care, then you aren't going to be terribly confused if you skip the first game.

For the record, the first game is divided into two parts. The first part is a romantic comedy that ranges from somewhat decent to rather sub-par. The second part is set in a military academy in an alternate reality, and I thought it was the most gripping VN I've ever played.
