Depends mostly on the crack.
I remember in Mirrors Edge, you can only walk in Chapter 4 without updated crack.
But most of the time, they work and as a bonus, no DRM bullshit.

So, you're new to the game. Welcome to the crew; we could always use another deck swabber, and for fucks sake, wear a goddamn eyepatch and say "arrrgh" once in a while. You also have to pretend to not comprehend the concept of "buy," so saying "buy pirated pc games" is flying past gibberish toward the territory of the insane.
Typically, there won't be any difference between a legit and pirated copy (depending on the cracker) except for a noticeable lack of DRM. However, there are times when devs add "passive DRM" that renders the game unplayable, makes it extremely tedious, or just tries to shame the pirate for their unscrupulous ways. Some examples.
Also, if it's available on GOG, or is in a steam sale with huge discounts, just pay for the fucking thing.
