Questions about SMT: Nocturne

This is the only SMT game I have not played (aside from DS titles.) I love all the others, and I am thinking of picking the game up this weekend. But this game isn't cheap here at all, so I want to clear up some things before I buy it.
First off, I have heard it is nothing like any of the other games in the series. Without giving off any spoilers, what games this game so much different from the rest of the series?
Secondly, I have hard on several occasions that this is possibly the hardest RPG ever made. Is this true, in your opinion? I personally can't stand easy games, so if this is true, it is a big, big plus for me.
Third, I'm wondering how well it works on an 80gig PS3, if anyone knows. The app on the PlayStation site says it works fine, but I have found several games that it said works fine, that barely worked at all.
Any input on these points would be greatly appreciated.

I completed NOCTURNE several times. Its still best RPG on ps2 ever made, to me.
Yes its very hard. But it gets even harder if you take the *Hard* Difficulity.
The game deleivers a *feeling of mystery*.
Lots of endings.
You can choose your allignment *it will be determined looking at your answers* you can be Law alligned,Chaos alligned, neutral.

It's not that it's nothing like the other games in the series, it's that the other games in the series aren't actually in the series. Let me explain, there are actually only five SMT games. Persona, Devil Survivor, Devil Summoner and all these other games are not SMT games. Atlus USA just bolts the SMT name to hopefully increases sales. The actual SMT games all have a similar feel and are generally far harder and more extreme than the mis-called SMT games like Persona and Devil Survivor.
These are the actual SMT games:
Shin Megami Tensei (SNES, later remakes on various consoles)
Shin Megami Tensei II (same as above)
Shin Megami Tensei if... (same as above)
NINE (Xbox and Japan only)
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne/Lucifer's Call (PS2)
The first two have been translated, but only fan translations of the SNES version. AFAIK, if... and NINE have not been translated.

Thank you for that post, Teclo, that was very informative. I will likely check out the other actual SMT games you listed (the translated ones of course) some time soon. I will +rep you when I can.

You're welcome. I'll just say, though, that the first two SMT games are really quite ugly - they do that 16-bit console version of a 3D maze for their dungeons. Even NPC areas are done in this style, like your own home and the nearby mall. A further problem is that the NPCs are sprites in a 3D world (like the enemies in Doom) but they reappear and disappear depending on where you stand or look and will automatically talk to you (repeating the same thing) each time they appear next to you.
It's hard to explain properly, so just look for the game and the translation and you'll see what I mean. If you can get over that (I must admit, I couldn't but many SMT fans could) then it's meant to be a very deep game with an incredibly interesting storyline - you just have to really work for it.
Although if... wasn't translated, if you get the PS1 version you can use this Let's Play article to guide you through the game. Or you could screw the game and just read the Let's Play in order to get an idea of what happens. Whatever you prefer.
The whole franchise came from a book written in the 80s. That book spawned two games that were on the Famicom/NES amongst other platforms. They were just called Megami Tensei (Reincarnation of the Goddess) and they of course led to the Shin Megami Tensei series, that in turn leading to all the spin-offs like Persona.
You can see a translation of the original book here if you're interested.

Seems like everything been said already; you best get to it and buy it. I bought mine at GameStop for 30 bucks in good condition and with the original box and booklet. I snatched that game quick and couldn't believe I found it at GameStop for $30.00. That was a good day.
I like playing my PS2 games on my PS2 since it's right next to my PS3 and still pluged in right next to my PS1.

Ahh. I already have both SMT and SMT II translated, got them the night you wrote that reply. XD But I don't mind the graphics at all, I tend to play SNES and PS1 more than any other system due to the difficulty of today's games is too low. But I did manage to find a translation of if..., seems like it was just recently done.
