Pretty much, if you dont use the referral code youd be starting with of course around 20k gold only.
Now regarding about choosing a side, even if you choose Demons youre not forbidden from using cards with Man or Godly allegiance. It only makes it easier to use their skills... From what I read.

Also enhancing cards with the same allegiance gives more exp compared to enhancing with different ones.
