What is S4 League?

1. What is S4 League?
S4 League is a third-person shooter multiplayer game developed by Pentavision in 2008. It is currently hosted in Europe by alaplaya and by Pmang in Korea. Having said that, people outside of Europe are allowed to play the European version.
The title of the game comes from the four "S" words defining this game: Stylish, eSper, Shooting, and Sports. eSper refers to the 'skills', powers held by characters within the virtual world setting of the game.

2. Starting Out
Take the tutorial. Always. It only takes a few minutes, but you’ll learn all the little buttons you’ll need to play the game. It’s helpful and you get money. Awesome. Now you know how to run around and jump and shoot a gun. Alright!
Now enter the beginner channel so you can play other newbies. You might think you want to enter the free channel because you’ll learn faster. NO YOU WON’T! The free channel will be full of pros. You will not learn anything here! In fact, you’ll probably get upset at dying over and over. These pros know all the tricks and what not. Not only will you be frustrated, but so will your team. You’re dragging them down. Go to beginner channel and learn some moves and how to aim and all that stuff.
Now that that intro is out of the way……….
I. Licenses
There’s a little button on the lower right on the lobby screen. It should be yellow. Anyway, this allows you to obtain the license for various weapons. In the beginning, you have a 10h Submachine gun and Plasma sword and a 10h +30HP skill. However, if you want to use other weapons and skills, you’ll need to do these licenses. They give you a 5h weapon to try out. These 10h and 5h are 10 hours and 5 hours respectively. Meaning, after the number of hours is up, the weapon will disappear. You’ll need to buy the weapon if you want to use it.
II. Missions
These are always good to do as early as possible. Just click the M button on the upper right of the screen. It’s a good way to earn a little money which you will be needing. More importantly, these beginner missions teach you how to play the game. It’s very useful for learning and you make some money.
Once you finish these beginner missions, you get weekly ones. These vary for every person with different tasks and make you a little money. Not really worth it, but it’s a nice bonus.
III. Money
The currency in this game is called PEN. You start out with 30,000 and if you do the tutorial, you get 5,000 more. Don’t spend it on clothes right away! Telling you now, weapons are expensive, although with the new patch… Not really anymore… Still, it’s a good idea to wait until you are able to buy a full set of weapons and a skill before investing in clothes.
IV. Other Useful Newbie Tips
a. Try out everything. There is no such thing as a useless weapon or skill in this game. They fit different styles of play. Choose a combination that work for you.
b. Keep a variety of weapons for the situation. Don’t equip three submachine guns. Be creative and find what works for you.
c. Reload when you can. Like other shooters, every bullet is important. Don’t worry if you run into an enemy. Switch to another weapon then switch back or whatever works for you.
d. Some obstacles can be destroyed. Useful for people who are hiding and various other things. Depends on the situation and what you want to do.
e. Learn to switch weapons. If you’re fighting someone and in the process run out of ammo, don’t waste precious time reloading. Switch to another weapon with ammo or a sword. You don’t want your enemy shooting back at you!
f. Keep moving. There are some exceptions, but always move. You’re never safe in this game. A moving target is much tougher than one who is standing. Also, when shooting, move while shooting. Learn to aim while moving. Very useful tips.
g. Teamwork helps a lot. When first starting out, you might go do your own thing, but later against more experienced players, you’ll find that it’s much harder to get things done yourself. Work as a team. In Touchdown, you’ll find rushing as a team is much more effective as your teammate will back you up and pick you up. In Deathmatch, that goes without saying. 3v1 is much more disadvantageous.
h. Learn to see laggers. We all lag from time to time, but real laggers are near impossible to kill. Rather than waste bullets on them, move on to a different target. You can’t hurt laggers, they can’t hurt you. If you try and kill one, their teammate will come and kill you. By the way, laggers are usually jumpy and have a red circle symbol over their head.
i. Watch other more experienced people play. Go to free channel and observe. Don’t actually play, join a room that allows only under the maximum of 12 and choose to observe. You’ll learn a lot of the jumps and strategies people employ.
j. Most importantly, have fun. It’s a game. Play how you want, become a pro how you want. Don’t let others influence how you play. Your game will evolve as your understand the nuances of the game and you’ll soon learn to make your style of play fit.

3. Game Modes
This area will teach you about the various game modes in S4.
I. Touchdown
Commonly abbreviated as TD, it’s a game mode similar to assault in Halo where you take the that starts in the middle of the map and you take it to the enemy base. The first team to reach a set score or the team with the most scores after time has run out is the winner. The strategy for this game mode can be quite complex. Pretty frantic and awesome game mode. Up to twelve players can play with two teams of six.
Anyway, some things you should know…. The ball is called the fumbi. Don’t know why. It just is.
Next is that the one carrying the fumbi will experience a drain in SP. Meaning after a little while… You’ll have no SP to use your skills! OH NOES! That’s alright. Get the fumbi over and score!
However, there is an exception to this which many people like to call “SP Pity”. This occurs when you are down by two or more scores. At two scores, you will experience a reduced rate in SP drain, however, it’s very small and hardly noticeable. You’ll be able to run a second or two longer with the fumbi. After three scores, it becomes much more pronounced. The drain is very slow and you can do a lot with your SP in that time. After being down four scores, your SP will not drain while carrying the fumbi. However, it will also not recover, so use your SP strategically.
II. Deathmatch
Commonly abbreviated as DM, it’s basically what it says it is. A duke it out brawl for who can get the most kills. Can be played with up to 12 people with two teams of six. Not much to be said about this one. Just kill.
III. Chaser
An odd newly introduced game mode. It’s similar to juggernaut in Halo. You go through several rounds with one person as a chaser. They run around trying to kill everyone. The goal of the chaser is to kill all participants. The goal of everyone else is to live. This game mode requires at least 4 participants.
The chaser is really tough to kill. Not impossible, but tough. A coordinated attack is needed, but even then may not be enough. The chaser has increased vitality, speed, and reloading abilities. Tough. Better to try and live.
IV. Miscellaneous Stuff
There is a thing called “Damage Pity” in TD and DM. This is basically an increase in damage for the losing teams. I’m not sure about the totals, but I know that it hurts.

4. General Tactics
This guide will help those who are struggling in the game. It’s just maneuvers and useful things to keep in mind.
I. Dodging/Fainting
It’s simply A or D + Space. Use this to get out of sticky situations. This consumes SP, but gives you a huge jump to the left or right. There is something specific called fainting which you use when you’re stunned with the plasma sword or counter sword or for a short moment, the storm bat. This requires a large amount of SP, nearly the whole gauge. However, you’ll save yourself.
II. Wall Jumps
Jump at a wall, then press the jump button again. It’s a tricky, but very useful skill to use. It covers huge distance with little SP used. It can be used to escape or move the fumbi with, also can be used for ambushing people. It’s a really great and useful technique everyone should master.
III. Half-Step
It’s running and jumping at the same time. Basically, jump and dash repeatedly. Add some sideway movement and you’ve got something great for dodging bullets. However, it’s not without it’s problems. It’s faster than walking, but slower than straight up running. And if you’re not good, it’s really a useless thing to do. Well, you just have to know the time and place to use it.
IV. Jumping
It sounds easy, but it’s not. Jumping is what it is, jumping into the air. However, you find so few people using it in the early stages. This is because it’s difficult to aim. Learn to move in a pattern that makes it difficult for your enemy to track you, but makes it easier for you to aim. Whether it is a melee fight or a gun fight or both, jumping makes it harder for the enemy to hit you.
V. Ambushing
It’s a great tactic to learn. When you’re being chased, it’s useful to run around or hide behind a corner and wait for the enemy. Do not assume you’ll always get the kill this way. You’ll need to be very skilled at this. However, it’s a very useful tactic for defending yourself and getting some easy kills.
VI. Know Your Weapon
I can’t say this enough. Know what your weapon is capable of doing. This seems obvious, but there are too many out there who don’t know what their weapon can or can’t do. For example, the Gauss Rifle is a classic example. This is a weapon that loses accuracy the more you fire it. It’s not an automatic weapon, it’s more effective as a burst weapon. Another you’ll see are people who snipe with a submachine gun, smash rifle, or heavymachine gun. These guns are not good at doing it. The spray is ridiculous at long ranges. Especially the heavy machine gun. Don’t do it!! If you want to snipe, at least use the Semi-Rifle.
VII. You Run Faster With Swords!
Very important in TD. You don’t know how many times I’ve seen people running with an Heavy Machine Gun. You run the slowest with an HMG.
Here are the speed tiers. Don’t quote me on this. It’s a pretty rough estimate. Handgun > Swords > Revolver = SMG > Semi Rifle = Smash Rifle > Railgun = Canonade >Mind Energy = Mind Shock > Sentry Gun = Sentry Nell > Heavy Machine Gun.

5. Weapon Tactics
I. Submachine Gun (SMG)
Carries 30 bullets. This is probably the most used weapon in the game. It boasts a high rate of fire, but lacks in accuracy. It should be used as a short to mid ranged weapon.
II. Semi Rifle (Semi)
This is a medium to long ranged weapon carrying 25 shots. This weapon has a high accuracy and can be used for sniping. Its rate of fire is slower than the SMG. This weapon can zoom in.
III. Smash Rifle
This boasts a good 50 shots. It’s rate of fire is the same as the Semi Rifle with the accuracy of the Submachine gun. It also has melee capabilities. However, don’t count on that to be of any help. This should be used in short to medium range.
IV. Handgun (HG)
This gun carries 16 shots. It has a decent rate of fire and deals a lot of damage and it has knockback. The accuracy is not too great and shot be used only for close ranged combat. More importantly, it increases your speed.
V. Revolver
It carries 7 shots. The rate of fire is slow, but it packs a punch. It’s like a shotgun and deals a lot of knockback if it connects. Great for rushes. However, it should only be used as a short range weapon. The damage reduces dramatically the further the opponent.
VI. Gauss Rifle (Gauss)
Not a commonly used weapon because it’s very difficult to use. While it has automatic capabilities, its true powers lie in controlled bursting of the weapon. If held, the bullets spray everywhere. However, it has excellent accuracy if used in bursts. The strongest of the rifles I think. Contains 25 shots.
VII. Railgun
This is basically a chargeable sniper rifle. Fully charged, this weapon will kill with a chest shot. Anywhere else will deal an incredible knockback. A half charged shot will kill if it hits the head. Contains 4 shots.
VIII. Cannonade
This weapon is similar to the railgun but much weaker. However, it boasts an “area of effect” type of shell. It’s great for destroying walls and obstacles. It’s weaker than the railgun, but still offers good damage with the possibility of one hit kills. This weapon does have a knock back if it does damage. It has 5 shots.
IX. Sentry Gun(Sentry)
An installation type weapon, you basically put it somewhere and it aims at a person and fires three shot bursts with a few seconds between the bursts. The damage is nothing to scoff at and the pushback from the shells make it troublesome. If positioned correctly, this weapon can be used to block the path of enemies. You have 3 sentries, but only one can be on the map at a time.
X. Sentry Nell(Nell)
This is another installation type weapon. Put it down and anything that comes near is stunned while taking a chunk of damage. Stick this behind a corner and watch people run into it get stunned when you can get some easy kills. You have 3 of these but only one can be placed on the map at a time.
XI. Mind Energy
This weapon can heal your allies. You can heal through walls and you don’t have to aim. That’s it really.
XII. Mind Shock
Similar to mind energy, it goes through walls and attacks the enemy. No aiming is required, but it drains the enemy slowly. You also recover your own HP in this manner.
XIII. Plasma Sword
A melee weapon, it’s a very useful and user friendly blade. The jump attack boasts a stun which stuns anything in its path. It has a dash attack which allows you to dash at your enemies and then you have a weak slash which is a quick slash and a strong slash which takes a little more time but hits for power and knocks them back into walls.
Note…. Hitting into walls cause more damage. Another great way to kill is to get critical hits. This means actually putting your crosshairs on the person and hitting them.
XIV. Counter Sword
Like it sounds, this weapon has the ability to counter melee weapons with its revenge. Most sword attacks when attacking a Counter Sword user with Revenge activated will be stunned. They’ll be open for its powerful jump attack, strong slash, and 4 hit combos. A very powerful weapon.
XV. Storm Bat
It’s a bat. It’s a very powerful weapon, but has the least range of the three melee weapons. It’s perfect for ambushing with its jump attack. A head strike will usually be a one hit kill. If not, you can follow it up with a strike sending people flying. It also has the tornado where you can spin into the enemy dealing damage.
Note…. Most sword attacks have a delay after using them. Use with caution.
I. Submachine Gun (SMG)
Carries 30 bullets. This is probably the most used weapon in the game. It boasts a high rate of fire, but lacks in accuracy. It should be used as a short to mid ranged weapon.

6. Touchdown Tactics and Tips
Some of you hate Touchdown. Some of you find it difficult to score. Maybe you have some terrible teammates. Whatever the case, here are some tips and tactics for you.
I. Always keep your eye on the ball
This is the most important thing in TD. KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL! You can’t win unless you score and you can’t score unless you know where the fumbi is. The fumbi sends a beacon straight into the air showing its location. LOOK FOR IT! There are times when you’re busy in combat, but whenever you’re free, try to find it again. It’s important. Know who has the ball whether it’s in your team’s hand or the enemy or its being reset. Know where the ball is at all times.
II. Defense is Overrated
They say defense wins championships…. Not in TD! The object of the game is to move the ball from the center to the opponent’s base. You can’t do this on defense. Defense should always be secondary. There is no reason your whole team should be on the defensive. If your team is on defense and the other team is on the offense, they have already won. Offense will score you points. They have higher odds of scoring than you do. Also… No defense is perfect. It can be good, but it’ll never be unbeatable.
That’s not to say you should abandon defense. When you die, make sure you know where the ball is during your respawn waiting. Click to different teammates and try to find the location of the ball. Once you know and have respawned, take the action needed which may be to defend.
III. Play for the Ball
Following the first rule of TD…. KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL! You play the ball. Attack the ball carrier, grab the ball, run the ball. Everything revolves around the ball. If your team is rushing, go with them! Help them out! Shield them with your body or the Shield skill. Kill everything in front of them! Or if it’s just you and the ball carrier, follow them at a close but safe distance and when they die to drop the ball, pick them up! Time your run to grab the ball and rush it to the goal! Too many times do people get distracted by something else when they could have scored if they just played the ball.
IV. Work Together
TD is a team game. Work together. Rush together. Coordinate attacks. A loner gets killed easier. Backup is always nice to score. This goes with defense as well. If you’re alone and drop the ball. Alert your team to defense.
V. This is Your Captain Speaking
When your teammate has the ball… He is your captain! Follow behind him! When he dies, pick up the ball and take it the extra length! There’s your new captain! What if you’re in front of the captain? Keep going and clear his path! Help your captain!
Formations are the win. Rush the goal as a team. Scatter and wreak havoc and confusion to help your captain score!
VI. Use Walls Wisely
Too often do I see poorly made walls. These walls help the other team more often than not. It makes it harder to attack the ball carrier and it doesn’t stop the other team. Just be careful about the walls your place. Be smart. Don’t block your teammates.
VII. Dying? Don’t be Discouraged!
This is TD! Your deaths don’t matter! Just contribute and help your team. Help on defense by throwing bullets at the enemy. Help on offense by being a meatshield. It’s not as pretty as scoring, but it really helps.
VIII. Closing Words
KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL! I can’t say this enough…. Other than that…
Never give up. Have fun. Don’t get angry. It’s just a game. Leave it all out on the field and now you did your best to help your team.

Wow, thanks for writing all that out. I'll rep you when I'm able to.
To anyone reading this just to see what it's about, I really recommend this game. I don't really like FPS but this seems to have the core gameplay to appeal to FPS fans plus nice twists to appeal to non-fans. It's almost like a Jet Set Radio FPS in some ways (well it's a third-person shooter but it plays just like an FPS).

Or you could just run around and shoot at anything that moves. I got better at playing S4 the hard way. And that is being a trigger happy psycho. Since there's this new patch that ensures you won't get game-overed when you go bankrupt, there's no need to worry about points or who got first rank, it's how you played and how you improved that's important. So I say, screw plans and strategies! Go run around slashing and shooting you'll learn to get better. I got better with my plasma sword through equipping only that said weapon and went slash happy. Well, this applies to the guys who doesn't play TD much since you pretty much need plans and strategies or else you're pretty much fucked.
