Thief

The reboot the the 1st person stealth series has finally been announced for next-gen consoles and PC sometime in 2014. Being a longtime fan of the Thief franchise, it's great to finally see Garrett back in the shadows, so to speak. It looks like Eidos Montreal is staying largely true to the old game's style of avoiding as many guards as possible. This time, however, you have the ability to properly fight back with some supposedly brutal melee attacks. It's supposedly set so that you can defend yourself, but can still be killed rather easily if you're not careful. I kinda like the option to fight back as resetting every time a guard spotted me was getting kind of old.

Anyone have any thoughts on the reboot?

Can anyone give a brief explanation what the original game was

Basically, you play as a thief in a sort of medieval setting with fantasy and steampunk themes mixed in. It's very stealth focused, where you pretty much hide in shadows for the duration of the game. You have a variety of weapons and tools, including a blackjack, a bow, lockpicks, etc., that you use to get to your objective (usually something to steal). You have the option to knockout or even kill guards, but it's usually better to avoid them altogether. There are even a few levels that switch to a focus on survival horror, with zombies and ghosts appearing in a few maps. If you're interested in checking the game out, the entire series is available for purchase on Steam.

Very exciting! I enjoyed these games way back when and was pleased when I first heard about the game coming out. The only concern I have right now is if it was overly influenced by the modern gaming envirionment and left its roots behind (as I feel was the case with the Halo franchise). Hopefully it won't just be an assassin's creed rip off. As Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee once said, Thief is the stealth game that all the modern games wish to be. So hopefully they re-invent the genre instead of merely trying to do what's popular.

Still, I don't want to come off as a downer, this is very cool news and I can't wait to see more on it.

This sounds quite very appealing. Hopefully it'll fix the problem with zombies or something that I heard about.

So basically, something like Dishonored but with more emphasis on stealth?

Thief is what Dishonored wishes it could be. Dishonored is the modern day Thief until Thief 4 comes out.

I don't like the news that it's essentially going to have the same system as Hitman Absolution, with magic focus vision and highlights. Even worse, the devs are (allegedly) adding a bullet time feature. Fuck that shit. Bitches be casualizing my Thief. Naturally, I won't be using it on principle. I do like, however, the news that there won't be a focus on the supernatural. The undead made Thief 1 bullshit. So much unnecessary tedium. Good thing Metal Age was the best in the series. And rightly so, since Looking Glass made it and they knew what the fuck they were doing (i.e., creating a sequel superior to its predecessor). That game (T2) was genuinely unsettling.

Thief 4 will be a good game. I don't have high hopes for it, nor will it reach the greatness of Thief 2, but it'll be okay, like Dishonored was. I don't normally set myself up for disappointment like this, but I'll brag about being right at least once. It can't get any worse than Thief 3.

By the way, psbox, Thief doesn't just have "steampunk themes mixed in," it's pretty much a steampunk game. Don't mind me, I'm just being a pedant. The entire series is also on GOG, where I got the series in a steampunk & cyberpunk sale a couple of months ago. It feels good to have a legit copy of the series.

I think the two games are similar because Harvey Smith, game director for Dishonored, used to work for Ion Storm, who developed Thief: Deadly Shadows.

I don't mind. I just felt that the medieval themes in Thief tended to stick out more predominately than the steampunk did.

It's a shame that I missed out on that Steam sale. I own physical copies of the first two games, but I have no idea where they went.

Welcome back, Garrett. I hope they don't mess this up.

GOG. I specifically decided to mention GOG because I believe their service is better; they let you own your game.

Oh, cool. So none of that DRM bullshit that keeps you from playing single player games without an internet connection? All that shit really does is piss off the people who actually paid for the game. Hell, my brother bought SimCity on launch and still hasn't been able to play it because of EA's shitty servers. And yet, pirated copies work better than the legally purchased retail version.

Think of it as a first-person Espionage game, where stealth is an extremely important factor to the game.

I was always a fan of Thief, as it felt (As a bad comparison) sort of like a Medieval Metal Gear Solid, since that's truly the only other espionage game I've ever played AND enjoyed.

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully this doesn't get butchered like DmC's reboot.

Alright, so Eidos Montreal claims to have made it entirely possible to do a non-lethal play-through of the story in Thief. I'm not sure how to take this, as it gives me the impression that it's going to be easy to kill people and that just doesn't sound like a proper Thief game to me. I'm worried that the stealth is going to be watered down for more action to cater to a wider audience. Honestly, I'd rather the game focus on sticking tenaciously to the shadows just to survive. Garrett's a master thief, not a fighter. I can understand if he could knock out a guard or two or do a couple of stealth kills. After all, a guy with that much skill should at least be able to defend himself or pick off the unwary. But openly fighting with guards should be borderline suicidal. For now, I'll try to reserve my judgement until I see some proper gameplay to brush away my concerns.

The stealth system in the first two games was pretty simple if you think about it. You're either in darkness or not. If you're partially exposed, then the closer the enemy is, the easier it is to spot you. (It goes without saying that making noise should always get people's attention if they're close enough.) That should not be hard to replicate, especially for the devs who made Deus Ex: HR. I would honestly be surprised if they fuck up something that basic to the Thief series. However, there's an aspect to the stealth, one I consider very important to the Thief series, that would be a determining factor of whether or not the stealth was "watered down": peripheral vision. If their FOV looks like o<, then Eidos made a stealth game for casuals. For those who never played the original games, the people's peripheral vision made their cone of vision look like o|.

Thief also had footsteps even while crouching, but that shit was ridiculous. It was like right after waking up in the middle of the night and organizing his gear, Garrett made sure to wear his lucky tap dancing shoes.

Usually I'm one of the people rolling my eyes at people talking about how the industry is making games too easy. Not that I ever disagreed, just more along the lines of thinking people were blowing stuff out of proportion. However after watching Borderlands 2 deviate away from what made me love the original game I don't actually like what I'm hearing about this new Thief in terms of steering away from its roots. However, as always, I'll withhold judgement until the game itself comes out.

Thief 4 devs wrote...
instead of piling on shadows as in earlier games, Eidos Montreal both obscures and illuminates its streets with an ever-present fog.

“Fog helps us to light the whole game. If you have a dark scene in a back alley, you just put fog in it and then you see the silhouette. You’re never in the pitch dark,” Cantin said.

I'm pretty sure that's the first games and not this remake.

Yeah my mistake, it was the first. I wonder what he'll think of this.
