You should almost always play the game first. The game is usually much more in depth in both plot and character development. The animes that are adapted from VNs are usually very shallow with notable exceptions of course.

I, too, would say play it first. Watching it first only lets you see little clips from the game, and then you'd know how some of the story arcs end, making the build-up to them less dramatic (at least, that's how I feel).

Even though I've only played two visual novels so far, Crescendo & Do You Like Horny Bunnies, and have never seen an anime based off of one, my experience with harem manga to harem anime story translation, Rosario + Vampire being one example, tells me it would be much better to play the game first, if you intend to play the game and watch the anime.

Without a doubt play it first. Playing it will let you get the full experience, whereas if you watch first you'll get the basic plot and know some of the plot twists but you definitely get a better experience if you play first.

Rosario Vampire is based off manga not a vn and yeah the manga is A LOT better. I'd agree that in most cases the VN story is better with the exception of what seems to be Shuffle. Although Nerin was more likable in the vn.

However, as I said before, I have NOT seen a anime based off a visual novel before, so I was making a comparison between the two because, like Rosario Vampire, many visual novels have a harem element in their story.

-Fate/stay Night
-Utawarerumono
-Da Capo
-Shuffle
-ef -Tales of memories/melodies-
etc...etc...etc...
Honestly, there's like 30-40% of them in the anime industry. :)

I prefer playing first, makes the story of the game more enjoyable, but sometimes it happens that I watch the anime first by accident or release time, and it makes me want to play the game, but cuts off the surprise a little, i watched Utawarerumono first and then found the game, since I already knew the ending of the story it was a little less fun to play, it lost the unknown factor of the plot.

i prefer watching first. The story in anime is usually less entertaining than the one in the novel, so i keep the best for last. Usually i rewatch the anime after playing the novel.

Curious and Wondering
I'm all for playing it first. I usually prefer checking out the source before watching an anime adaptation.

I'd say watch the anime firrst since you're almost guaranteed to feel disappointed after comparing it to the VN. When watching the VN second, you can at least say that the anime was a good summary to the larger part of the overall plot.

It depends on which one came out first. The one that came out first will usually always be better.

Honestly, I watched F/SN, Shuffle, Da CApo and all the others first mostly because at that time I wasn't a Visual Novel Expert as I am now, and I don't have any VNs (eroge is a different thing)
I really started playing after finishing "Really? Really!" and "Princess Maker 4"

Play first then watch. Always aim for the best first and treat the last ones (animes) as bonuses.
since Anime adapted from a VN is always limited and too shallow in story presentation.

For watching the anime first, you won't really know what'll happen next. Another thing is after the anime, when I go back to the original material (be it manga, VN), it's always great to see stuff that wasn't in the anime that makes me go "Wow, why wasn't that in it", instead of being disappointed like "Why did they just skip the scene."
EDIT: To add on since other people have mentioned it, I like saving the best things for last. Probably just me since I hate being disappointed, cough Shuffle.
