Why is Rance likable?
0
I tried describing it but all my descriptions painted him as an un-redeemable douche, which is true. So how is he a likable character despite his oft times horrible habits?

Because he's an unrepentant douche who, despite being an ass sometimes shows a good side to him. Look at it this way. It's like how a good act performed by a vile person is more striking than one done by a saint.
Also, guy has swaaaaaaaggggg, you can't lie.

Honestly putting Rance in extremes such as hate or love is inaccurate. Your not wrong in saying he's an unredeemable douchebag but at the same time your not right.
Sill plain is his slave and he abuses her constantly, but he's never done any permanent damage to her and the recent three Rance games are dedicated to him exploring the entire world(the man who would never lift a finger to scratch his own nose) looking for a way to lift Sill's permanent imprisonment because although he'll NEVER openly admit it: he misses her.
On a side note: I like him since he's waaaay more interesting than those generic and flawless blank slates that dominate the VN protagonist field, he's got a killer smile/laugh and he named his dick Hyper Weapon.

This sums it up pretty nicely. I also agree with what the others have said--while Rance seems like a total douche, you know he cares about some stuff deep down. He also has a pretty interesting back story if you've ever read it.

I think it is because in a way he is a satire on male dominance in culture. His heart is often in the right place but the methods he chooses to employ, while despicable at times, is used in such an over the top fashion that it mocks the trope that women need strong men to defend them, when in reality his army is mostly composed of strong women that protect him. The games at times can hit a little too close and seem rapey, I think that in context it is sending a message that these things are not ok.
Then again I could be reading to much into the the developers motives and maybe they are just pervs that get off on this. I have a love/hate relationship with the Rance games but I do think it is a worthwhile discussion.

And here the best I could think up was that he is a perfect expression of a gamer's desires. He is unrelenting and uncompromising, more than once he is presented with a choice and will find a way to not have to choose. (a situation that is super common in more fluid games like DnD, players always want to take option 3 where it does not exist.) He wants to fuck and often does anything that moves. and so on. this guy in my opinion is a genius paradox in that the player often has no choice in how he acts and yet is an excellent player analog by doing what the player wants anyway.

There are arguably two reasons why Rance the character is likeable.
A) He's likeable because others like him. While he always get an aside to what Rance is thinking, and it's usually none too nice, polite, or even socially acceptable, other highly likeable and redeemable characters find something good about Rance to stick to. And because we like the characters around Rance, he try to see things from their points of view, and find we can't hate Rance, just look at the amazing people who like him despite it all. Often times these are misunderstandings sometimes it's just the effect of being close to him for so long but whatever the case, even when he's loud and rude, violent and sexually assaulting all those around him he's still liked. Often times what people like about him seems to line up simply into how much he cares (all be it selfishly and perversely) about women. 'Don't hurt my women' 'that's my woman, you can't just do what you like with her!' stuff like that. Which leads be to the second reason.
2) He's likeable, because of his intent. Yes, Rance has intent that one would normally see only in wicked characters. He's driven purely by lust and greed. However, he never wants to have sex with a woman for some other reason, like to dominate them, or as a means to power. Rance just wants sex with beautiful legally old enough women because... Because he likes sex with women. And that's what I mean. In this strange way despite him lying to get sex, cheating to get sex, using force, sexually assaulting woman, raping more than a few (cause remember, if they ever say they don't want sex, it does count as rape), there's bizarrely no evil intent in it all. There's little to no humping a woman and then tossing them to the side for the troops or monsters. True he doesn't exactly stay where he is but there's not this sense of 'well, I've had you, now you are of no importance to me' every woman he fucks, is in his view HIS woman. And by being HIS woman they become important to him. Even as he goes on to the next HIS woman, even as he mistreats Sill despite her being HIS woman he never just dismisses someone who is HIS woman. He doesn't want to see HIS women be mistreated unless it's by him, abused unless it's by him, and definitely not sexually assaulted unless it's by him. It's the most selfish pigheaded thing ever, and does not cover for the sexual assault lying cheating and rape, but that passion for all women, even his slave, may be a part of why Rance is actually likeable.

I want you to tell me where have you seen that Rance is liked first. The places.I know it's from tvtropes, but
"Rance went from just another one of their protagonists to the company's poster boy. In fact, he was so popular that he dominated the Visual Novel Character Polls for years before the poll became exclusively for female characters."

Play more VNs/Eroges, see some of the worst scumbags(necessary Soukou Akki Muramasa insert) and you'll start to see why Rance isn't so bad.

I can see two reasons that haven't really been focused upon yet:
1. The Rance games all have a strong comedic component. If the plot was played for drama than Rance would probably come off immediately as a total monster, but since the game themselves don't take themselves too seriously the audience can relax their judgements as well. Not to say there aren't any dramatic moments, but even most of those don't focus on Rance himself.
2. Rance isn't actually held up to really be a good person. Sure, likeable characters like him, and we'll occasionally get a line about how he's not evil so much as his morality is totally skewed, but he's not really shilled by anyone as being a positive role model either. So there's no real dissonance between the work and the reader, unlike when supposed "heroes" do horrible acts and yet the narrative still expects you to see them as good.

IMHO, he is just like a child in body of an adult, by no mean he is complete monster, he just way too honest to his own desire, laws and moral to be damned. He just work in his own set of moral value, which roughly consists of
There should be more on the list(I made one ages ago), but I can't remember. Anyone who can add more is welcome
- Every pretty women with body of 15-29 years old(actual age to be damned, see Rizna and Pastel) is world treasure. It is my life mission to bring them to learn world happiness:"to become my woman". Ugly ones? They could just go to hell
- incest and loli is forbidden, no matter how attractive they are(quite decent common sense coming from him)
- Rape, torture, violence, and any kind mistreatment to world treasure(as stated above) is a grave offense. Unless I the one who done them

It's the context he's presented in.
If you present just his character itself, he's an asshole that very rarely acts for anyone interest but his own. It's hard to enjoy a person like that.
But given the context he is put into for his games, it exemplifies certain things. His asshole actions are often met with approval from his female conquests and given the mostly non-serious tone of his stories it makes it hard to dislike him.
The other side of things is that they specifically create characters that you absolutely want to dislike in the games that he conquers to 'free' females. So, yeah he's kind of an asshole but hey, this guy is a real douchebag so by comparison he's not too bad a guy. Just try and count how many guys in his games are less of a dick than Rayne, it's not a very high number.
Lastly, he strongly represents the desire people have to just cut loose without recourse for our actions and to just give into our temptations and desires.
Compare this to the more common H-Games where often you have to develop the relationship and story behind the relationship building up to it. His games were more novel comparably wise cause it was more about "Just beat up this guy and you can just take what you want instead because you're motherfucking Rayne. And don't worry, the girls secretly want you to take them so it's good."
Some other games have tried to copy this, but Rayne was pretty much the Iconic protag for this so he gets the most credit and likability for being that way.

I believe there is one obvious reason y most of us like him and play him, but no one wants to say it.
Rance:
-strong
-simple minded
-douche
-chaotic neutral
-easy going
-have unlimited lust
-able to fk/rape many many many girls and gets away with it
-have a hot female sex slave/wife/maid/mage following him
-gets to go on many adventures
I think the truth is we just want to be like him.
