Anyone know if the red light/rings of death
are still a problem on the current 360s?
or if it's going to be fixed with the new
$350 one coming out?
Buying mine in nov/dec sooo...
^^;;

While they were a problem, the current stock of 360's does not suffer from the red ring as much as the last generation. While it can still happen, there isn't much of a chance as there used to be. I myself have an older gen 360 and never got the red ring i'm assuming the problem is with all of those 12 year olds that don't take care of theirs and know they're moms will get them new ones. Long story short: if you take care of it, it won't get the red ring.
If it happens to get it Microsoft will fix it for free... though u kinda have to wait 3 weeks... but like I said: take care of it and it won't die.

only maybe 5-10% failure rate as of this gen of 360's

...I myself have an olden gen 360 and never got the red ring ...Wow respect, how did you managed that.
I myself have only bad experience with the old generation.
The first 360 I recieved was already broken form the start, than I got a new one which also got the red ring of death after couple of month. Thats why I sold the third one which broke a few days later after I sold it.
I also know some guys who already have their seventh old gen 360.
Well well that was bad luck I guess.
Now after 1 year of with no 360 I decided to buy one again because there was some specialoffer at this time. My current 360 is runnig well no problems at all, only a few time it freezed (hope that was only an error in the progamcode of the game). Well the first signs when a 360 is going to get the red ring is when games often freeze or there are some graphicfragments on the screen over and over agian (my second 360 had this problem in Oblivion, the icons of serveral spells were just some pinks squares). To prevent the red ring take care your 360 has a good airflow (no objekts behind the fans)
But like ShadowZero already said new gen 360 tends to break less often then the old on, basically because they have new chips from Infinion (think it was Infinion) and advanced heatmanagment.

current ones are Jaspers and new ones are going to be Valhalla models I think
and yeah, they're putting in new chips/better heat sinks now

Buy a 360 only if you're desperate. If you're like me, jsut leech off your friends who each have the different systems.

But the ps2 is the king of consoles. They still sell buttloads of them everyday. Though probably not as much as the new ones that are out now but nobody has ever sold as many consoles as the ps2. The ps2 is probably going to be my last console purchase, I'd rather beef up my computer once every 2-3 years and play games on it.

I've had my 360 since one month after the release of it and mine hasn't had the RRoD. I probably play it 2 hrs average a day and have taken it all over the place. I think it's just a matter of taking care of it like Pieman said, unless your an unlucky person who just happened to get one that was cursed...
But just incase mine does get RRoD, does MS still replace it even if the warranty on it is not up to date?

Had my 360 for over a year now and I haven't gotten RRoD. I did however get 1 red section flashing up, but that was telling me that there was an error with the 20gb Hardrive, something that Microsoft replaced free of charge due to being in warranty. I don't play it everyday, maybe every other day. And when I do, I'll play it for about 5-8 hours
But, it's a very good console with a large collection of games and I say it's definatly worth the buy.
Though, looking at that article, you could wait for the upgraded ones to come out. It is quite a loud console =S
Despite people bitching about paying for it, I think Xbox Live is a good service. It's simple to use and allows for some great co-op gameplay.

I get the Red Ring every few months, but after I turn it off, and turn it back on, works as good as new. Weird, huh?
XBOX Live is a great service, it's really easy to manage, and I think all the complaints are ill-founded. Also, many of the skilled players seem to play on the 360(I was playing the PS3 at my friends house, and every game I played on COD4, SC4, BF:BC all were filled with noobs).
Of course, it's all opinionated.
But keep in mind, if you're a sucker for JRPG's, the 360 is the way to go this generation so far.

I never got the RRoD on my console (one of the first microsoft shipped) because of a combo o good upkeep and luck. However, my luck ran out a couple months ago when my box fell to the E-74 error, and it was already well out of warranty. Good thing I know how to solder. Basically, once your warranty goes, find someone who knows how to solder, crack it open and tell them to re-solder the x-clamps for the GPU. It helps against E-74.
