Documents unsealed in his court case revealed Microsoft discovered its Xbox 360 could scratch discs before it went on sale in 2005, and even got as far as considering three possible solutions to the problem, the Seattle Tech Report revealed today.
The characteristic circular scratches can occur whenever the orientation of the console -- which is designed to be used in either a horizontal or vertical position -- is changed while the drive is spinning. Johnson filed his suit after his console scratched three store-bought game discs, and is seeking $50,000 in punitive damages.
Testimony obtained from a Microsoft program manager indicates that Microsoft became aware of the problem months before the 360's launch when retail demonstration consoles malfunctioned. The company examined three solutions: strengthening the magnets that hold the discs in place, slowing the rotational speed of the discs, and installing rubber bumpers to cushion the discs, but rejected them all. Installing the bumpers could have cost as little as $0.50 per console, the suit claims.
It's not the first time Microsoft has come under fire for alleged foreknowledge of Xbox 360 hardware issues, either. Back in September, an expose penned by VentureBeat writer Dean Takahashi claimed systemic failures in Microsoft's design and quality assurance processes lead to the Xbox 360's now-infamous overheating "Red Ring of Death" failures.

Damn.

ps3 for lifeOkay now to get serious and sorry about the random thing above. Why am I reminded of the girls that tried to sue mcdonald's when I read the story? It's a fact that people will try and sue for just about anything nowadays, tho microsoft isn't entirely without fault.

I can understand the guy wanting to get reimbursed for the scratched games, and by taking it to trail, it lets other 360 owners know that their discs will be scratched if they're stupid. (That should be a no-brainer, but there are so many warnings that I think it makes people dumb.) But the guy asking for $50,000 is totally inexcusable. Even if he does have to pay for a lawyer, $50,000 is too much.

The PS3 is still the best in my book. :)
The wii and 360 doesn't have a handheld system to connect to their consoles, unlike the PS3 and PSP. And that what makes the PS3 epic.

If were talking about the console then yeah ps3 is much better but I think 360 is still the best because it has something that matters...
[spoil]THE GAMES :!: :!:

If we're talking about which console is better, it all really comes down to the games. If there are a lot of PS3-exclusive games that you want, then buy a PS3. If there are a lot of 360-exclusive games that you want, then buy a 360. If there are a lot of Wii-exclusive games that you want, then buy a Wii. Saying that one console is better than another, without worrying about games, is stupid, because all the consoles are just tools, used to play the games.
