It's my understanding that a big part of the problem here is how women are taught to act in Japanese culture. They typically have the belief that it's not proper for a woman to actually be interested in sex, so they often try to act like they're not interested when they are in fact very interested. The natural result of this is that guys are often going to think that the girl doesn't actually mean it when she says no (and in many cases, she won't actually mean it when she says no, and she does in fact want the guy to proceed). So, while a girl saying no would be a clear sign to an American guy that the girl was not giving consent, the same is not true for a Japanese guy.

Now, obviously, that's a big problem for girls who actually mean no, so it's bound to end up with rape occurring in some cases (especially if the guy doesn't have the ability to somehow tell whether the girl actually means it - and some guys will probably use this tendency of Japanese women as a way to claim that the girl wanted it when they knew that she didn't), but this aspect of Japanese culture is one of the reasons that hentai frequently has men ignoring it when women say no. The result is that we end up with vanilla hentai where a woman says that she doesn't want sex, but the man proceeds anyway, and the story does not treat it as rape.

Ultimately, this kind of situation is going to look very different to Japanese readers than it will to American readers, and Japanese readers will be looking for more than the girl saying no to look it as rape.

Seeing as she’s the main character of this one, we get access to her internal dialogue and thus we know she’s actually into it. But, you are correct. That is the epitome of the concept.

And my axe. Rape culture is a thing. I had a friend who is married to girl from southeast Asia. He described an encounter with her where she rebuffed his sensual approach, NO RAPEY VIBES, with the harsh, "No! Stop! Don't!" He immediately stopped what he was doing, thinking he did not have consent.

She grew very upset with him, saying she wanted him to continue. Apparently there are some very different social cues that are engendered into the different cultures in those regions? And we are NOT equipped to detect the subtleties. At the same time, sometimes, it's just rapey BS that's been perpetuated by a strong, patriarchal society.

Guess what, jackass, either party is fully entitled to withdraw consent at any time. Her kissing him does not automatically equate to consent to sex, it means she consented to kissing. Her saying 'no' to him going further means she did NOT consent.
