With consent, this can actually be a healthy relationship. He does appear to be too controlling, as evidenced by looking at her phone and expecting her to update him about everything.

However, it's left somewhat ambiguous. Sometimes a submissive gives up control of their privacy willingly, and if she was volunteering that information the whole time of her own volition and not because he psychologically abused her into believing she had to, then his concerns might be justified and within the realm of their defined relationship.

I err toward the side of him being in the wrong because that's a more realistic scenario, but I selfishly want to believe that they have a consensual relationship with established boundaries.

Well, bc of his reasoning we got in the story, I don't see it would be inferred that he would have been as chill at the end if he found any text from/to a male even if it was, let's say, a hypothetically innocent texting from/to a leader of her study group. He most likely would have acted worse than what's in story.
