The main characters group is finally able to leave the place they were stuck in. As they got further along, they realize that the mist wasn't ending. So the father, in making sure they never fall at the hands of whatever the fuck is in the mist, mercy kills both his wife and son [along with two other adults] with a gun that only had four bullets in it. The father then gets out of the car and awaits his death


OH BUT THERE'S MORE!

As the father awaits his death, the mist slowly clears up and the military arrives thus effectively ending whatever it was that came to the town, The father screams uncontrollably much to the confusion from the militants upon seeing the now bloody vehicle and realizing what he has done.


FADE TO BLACK ROLL FUCKING CREDITS


I hated that ending. Storm of the century is another fucked ending.
