If you want to play games on the latop, you'll have to check out what graphic card it has. Discrete graphic cards are the best, since they're the same like what you have in a desktop. Integrated, but "brand" names like NVidia & ATI will only let you play older games, but at least they're "real" videocards. Chipset only affair like Intel GMA, etc. are not and will give you plenty of grief.
If you only use the laptop for work then it's a non-issue. (Unless you're doing CAD design or smg).
I can't tell you anything concrete about the two laptops above... likely the Intel one has either a discreet or integrated card. The AMD one has an APU, which is a combination of a CPU and a mid/low-range GPU integrated into the same chip. AMD APUs are doing OK, for gaming about the same as what you'd get from a cheap integrated videocard. All of these options, except the discrete card will use system memory. This isn't as great an issue as it used to be ten years ago, however if you're running memory hungry applications you should keep it in mind.
More on this:

Can you upgrade a laptop?
To a large degree the answer is *NO*.
You often can't swap out the CPU as unlike desktops it's often soldered in place instead using a socket. The graphic card is often integrated into the motherboard, meaning you can't change it. (Having a discreet card allows one to upgrade... it won't be cheap though as laptop discreet cards have a different form factor.
What *can* you upgrade?
RAM and storage.
RAM: Almost all laptops allow the user to pop a small hatch to replace/add more sticks of RAM. If there's on upgrade I strongly recommend for users it's to install more RAM - at least 8 GB, given how cheap RAM is nowadays - as modern operating systems were made with the assumption of having plenty of RAM on hand and having more *does* give a boost in daily operations.
(How much is *enough* is a hard question... however since RAM is cheap you can just buy plenty instead)
Storage: Installing a new HDD can be a real pain, as a lot of cheap laptops nowadays have to be almost fully disassembled before you can access the HDD. Older and more expensive models often had a bay you could release by flipping some latches or removing a couple of screws. Depending on the setup of the laptop this might be an operation you might wanna let the service/shop do for you. Make sure you backup your data first, including creating a recovery DVD for your OS.
...or better yet, getting an official MS install disc:

I see a lot of Intel suggestions here but the next line of AMD cpus are coming out soon, I predict that they will be the choice of many games for the future of gaming, now im not here to argue just to state what i know. Many games are direct console ports, and games made for PC often utilize more than one core, Intel has a strong single core going for it, but the Next gen FX series already has a 15% boost per core, and a 50% increase in multicore performance, and they are about to release their last CPU in the FX line up, the pile driver. Now the piledriver will have 16 core option, but 8 cores will be enough. The next gen consoles use the 8 core FX CPUs, and when a game is ported it will also utilize our computers 8 core CPUs, once games start to use all 8 cores effectively the Intel CPU line will fall back to business computing only, because the AMD will give better performance with a cheaper price. Now i run an old first gen FX-4100, there isnt much i cant max on this thing, and the overclock to 4.5 was pretty easy. The First gen Fx-8100 CPU rivaled the old i5 2500k chips on Intel side in raw performance, now two Generations later they are rivaling some of the upper end newer chips, now the cores alone are not as strong as Intel cores BUT the multi-thread of the games of the future will utilize at LEAST 8 cores, making the FX the better choice for the future of gaming. Now some will say "No games use more than one core" Well thats because they are mostly console ports, but now that the consoles are using 8 cores, so will our new PC games, multicore games are not hard to make like everyone believes, its hard to CHANGE a game to multicore, but if you start with the idea of multicore from the ground up then it is just as easy as devving a game. What im saying here is in a few months AMD will surpass Intel because AMD was improving technology and biding their time while Intel stood on top, AMD didn't walk to the top they hitched a ride with the net GEN consoles. I HIGHLY recommend getting an FX-AMD Cpu at this time, a few years ago i would have said Intel but now its on the verge of being outdated technology. You see AMD said they where done competing with Intel before making the FX lineup, if Intel had nobody to compete with then it drains the motivation to innovate and create, thats what AMD did but they did it in the background, not much attention was paid to them till BOOM you have a huge backing from some VERY INFLUENTIAL companies. These companies are not wrong i can assure you, and even if they are the games will still be optimized for 8 core performance and people with the FX chips will be very happy. Now i have tried to not include many opinions in this and tried to stick to facts. Final verdict in bold for those who don't want to read the wall of text, right now FX AMD is the smart choice. (And it works well with SLI or crossfire)[Also i can back all this up with degrees if need be, so you know im not a random idiot, and if you PM me i would LOVE to help you get a rig up and running stable, nothing better than a sexy PC coming on for the first time with all the fans! :P]
Nope. Your argument has some merit, but even John Carmack doesn't think AMD is gonna beat Intel in raw performance, even with developers optimizing more for the AMD architecture vs. Intel:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uooh0Y9fC_M&feature=player_embedded
Also, your comments about AMD CPUs outperforming their Intel counterparts in the same price bracket is hogwash... not for gaming. The myriad tests done by Tom's Hardware doesn't support your claim:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-6.html
Yes, AMD is a better choice on the lower-end of things, but in the higher-end range, Intel beats it hands down.

Don't use OpenOffice, it's development is dead, use Libre Office instead. Libre Office is FOSS (Free Open-Source Software), so it can be freely downloaded and used, and it's meant to be an "MS Office Substitute" so it should be more or less the same usage wise. (Unfortunately it's not, so prepare for some cursing). For small documents, MS Office is pretty much *the* software of choice worldwide, so they're unavoidable and going the "non-MS" way *will* give you plenty of grief.
As for writing a book: don't... at least not in Word/Writer.
You're better off breaking up your work-flow into specific parts and only focusing on the task at hand just as professionals do it:
1. Writing.
2. Editing.
3. Publishing
There's a separate piece of software for each task.
1. Writing: When you write, only focus on writing, there are even software out that specifically made for writers. I include reviewing and revising your stuff in this section. Focus on content, altogether ignore formatting!
2. Editing: This is the overall review and revision of your text. You're still focusing on content, but you ignore specifics and look for overall consistency, and this is when you focus on functional division of the text into Chapters, Headings, Tables, Paragraphs. This is functional, only focus on what is what, *not* how it looks!
3. Publishing: Now is the time to ascribe the proper styles to all the elements you defined during editing. This is when you create an actual layout. Because your text is already broken into separate, distinct elements (paragraphs, headings, tables, diagrams) you can focus on overall style and let the software do the layout and only intervene in problematic areas.
Since I only have a cursory knowledge of this world (as I wasn't in publishing but office documentation) I can't recommend specific software to you, but others have created long lists:
http://www.literatureandlatte.com/links.php

I think something got lost in translation for me, so to speak, but if I understood you correctly, you are saying I should stay with MS Office but not write a book in it?
Well, in that case, what would you recommend in terms of technical issues? I think you know what I'm talking about but I'm not sure if it is allowed. PM if you prefer. And what would you recommend in terms of writing long documents such as books?
As I pointed out, I'm not a writer so I can't give you any meaningful advice on which software to use for writing books. I've given some lists from people who do. Read up on what your options are and try some out until you find something that feels comfortable.
As for word processing, it's your choice, I'm just stressing that since *practically everyone else* uses MS word, using any 3rd party product will bring some strain with it.
As for your questions of "security" I'm not really understanding what you mean, unless you 'might' be referring to software that you no longer possess a valid license for... in that case a famous Bay of Pirates is your friend.
If you go there I might think about whether you need the latest software... for one thing the Ribbon interface makes me break out in explicative, hence I stuck with Office 2003, the last version *without* it.

Finally plain text editors are only focused on writing plain text and is a product not well known by Windows users beside programmers.
I have a feeling you're looking for a word processor, but I thought it prudent to point out what other *types* of software are out there, as your task might call for something else.
As for "free" Word substitutes, there's Libre Office the current successor to Open Office after the whole Sun fiasco.
I tried to be short so people would stick to the point but I see I provided little information and I think you are the guy to talk to.
Well, I suppose I have many requirements. I do want software to write long documents, books actually, I also write relatively short documents such as articles or reviews and starting next September, I'll want to write school papers.
I also have some privacy reservations which I understand can be seen as a paranoid but I am not looking for online software as I've seen people suggest on other websites such as Evernote.
I've also looked into OpenOffice and LibreOffice but I know nothing or very little about them.

I hereby claim Tohsaka Rin from Fate/Stay Night as my 1st Waifu.
She's the dream girl of men who want more in a girl than a pretty face or a submissive personality. She's as far as from the traits of the emotionally retarded and childish girls - nowadays codified as MOE - as one could ask for.
I hope we can get through the first date without her shooting me with Gandr or her having to regrow my vital organs after a homicidal Irishmen stabbed them.

Whoever is trying to sell their "fool-proof" filter or filtering service is peddling snake oil. No it can't work, the Internet is simply too big.
In practice, the misclassification rate is much, much worse. It's hard to get a sense of the total scale of misclassification by censorware because these companies treat their blacklists as trade secrets, so it's impossible to scrutinise their work and discover whether they're exercising due care.

A 1% misclassification rate applied to 20bn documents means 200m documents will be misclassified. That's 100m legitimate documents that would be blocked by the government because of human error, and 100m adult documents that the filter does not touch and that any schoolkid can find.In practice, the misclassification rate is much, much worse. So far, I've been writing as though "adult" content can be trivially distinguished from "family friendly" content. The reality is a lot muddier. There's plenty of material in a day's newspaper that I wouldn't want my four-year-old daughter to hear about, from massacres and rapes in Mali to the tawdry personal stories on the agony aunt page. Sorting the "adult" internet from the "child" internet is a complex problem with no right answer. There's no way to stop children viewing porn in Starbucks

I believe we are experiencing some confusion. I got the Paprika (2006) DVD, I put it on the laptop, it didn't play, it was blocked due to "copyrights". It didn't let me view the movie in neither Windows media player, Real Player, or Quicktime. The message that popped was something regarding copyright. I went to ask.com and asked how to play copyrighted movies. I found the program, it worked. That's why I reccomend it. That's it, I just wanted to add something helpful to this thread.
I had a PC, an XP, many many years ago, which without any program, played movies without any mention of regional or copyright block. Sorry for my ignorance of not knowing that ALL movies have that problem. I haven't played movies on a laptop for a long time, and that was the first time, and said that mention. Can I really be blamed for running into the wrong conclusion? No.
The issue was likely region blocking on the disc. All DVD drives, even the ones in PCs are supposed to have a region set. When the region on the disc and the device don't match the movie's not supposed to be played.
...except cheap Taiwanese/Chinese stand alone players didn't ever give a fuck.
Same goes for software. "Brand name" products from Microsoft/Apple have to play by the rules or they get the the mother of all anal law-suits over breaches of copyright treaties.
3rd party video player programs tend to not give a damn.

If your laptop supports it, just gen an external antenna. If not, you'll have to get a USB wifi card with a replaceable antenna, then go get a bigger antenna if the card's built in is not sufficient.

Nope. PC gaming never went anywhere, the desktop is a staple of the modern office - and lots of people have their 'home office' too nowadays - laptops are also PCs and are dominating personal electronics.
The biggest competition? Consoles... Pfffhahaha! Nope.
Cellphones.
Tablets.
Hand-held gizmos that pack enough computing power to allow a user to do stuff they could only do on a laptop earlier.
