Figures do increase in value once it's popular and very rare. The Saber lily figure by Good Smile originally sold for 100 and I've seen people sell it for 250 and 300, unopened I believe.
I certainly am not keeping any of my anime merchandise just to sell it again. I bought it so I can enjoy it not to profit.
