I had been looking for the source of these fantastic works for some time, and tineye finally helped me figure it out.
This art collective called Three Studio (http://www.three-studio.com/ ) melts down anime girl figures (I assume the cheapest ones, honestly) and uses them as a medium for sculpture and painting.
See what I mean?

If that were the case, the images would have to be reduced in size to fit the screen without stretching... and that would compromise reading as well as image quality.
