Any philosophical undertone was just below the surface and easy to discover, I expected more from a developer who publicly claims Earthbound as an influence.

Glad to see someone who doesn't like it that said something besides 'MEEEEHHHH EARTHBOUND CLONE'.
Really? I remember criticizing it's gameplay. It got repetitive once you found a monsters gimick, or a tedious grindfest if you do the no-mercy run.
Among all the earthbound "inspired" games it's probably my favorite though. It wasn't perfect by any means but it had a nice soundtrack and interesting mechanics/story lines.

Happens with anything people hype up and saturate the market with. Even I didn't want to go near it when people were fangasming over the shit. After watching some of the let's plays though from youtubers I enjoy, had a different opinion. I also like older style games so it was up my alley.
Oh. Part of the big message of the game was that you're supposed to find out about it yourself. Makes every impact-full moment in the game more meaningful because you got there yourself through your own choices.
To each their own I guess.
My biggest problem with the fanbase besides the cringe inducing fan art was the spoilers and pressuring people the to play the game a certain way.
