When I was in high school, I didn't have any friends, cause I focused all of my time on studying. In 11th grade, there was this girl who sat by me in homeroom, and she was also in 2 or 3 other classes with me. In whatever science class we had, (it might have been chemistry, I really don't remember) since we sat at the same table, we were always paired together for lab assignments, and while working on them we would talk about random stuff (music, movies/tv, games, etc.) every once in a while. 95% of the time she would be the one to start the conversation. I liked her, but I had always thought that she didn't like me as much, and that she was only pretending to be nice to me because we were always working together in class.

My twin sister, who was also in the same homeroom but no other classes as either one of us, was in our school's varsity tennis team with her. A few days before Valentine's Day, my sister asked me what I thought about this girl. Even though I liked her, I said something like "As a lab partner? She's alright."

My sister says "No, I mean do you like her? Do you wanna go out with her?"

I lied and said "No, I don't think of her like that. I only like her as a friend." going on to say what I said about her pretending to be nice, blah blah blah. My sister must not have said anything about it to her, cause her attitude towards me was still the same. If it had changed, I never noticed.

Later that year, after almost a year of our mom and step-dad dealing with their on and off relationship, they finally decide to get a divorce, which was finalized in mid-April. Dad got custody of our younger (by 4 years) half-brother, and my sister and I moved with our mom to an appartment downtown so we could finish the school year before we moved. Naturally, me not having any friends, I didn't tell anyone I was leaving, since I didn't think anyone cared anyway.

On the last day of school, the day before we were moving from Milwaukee to Madison, the girl asked if she could sign my yearbook, and I said sure. She said "Let me borrow it, I have to think of exactly what I'm gonna say, and I'll give it back when the day is over." So I let her take it. At the end of the day, I find her holding my yearbook, with this nervous look on her face. She hands it to me and says "Don't read it until you get home." and runs to her mom's car.

As soon as I get home, I immediately head to my room, open up the book to the first blank page, and it's completely full of her writing, explaining how she really liked me, we had so much in common, that she thought of me as one of her closest friends, and as I'm reading it all, I'm getting happier and sadder, (happier because I was wrong about not liking me, sadder because I found out too late) with each word that I read. Then at the very bottom of the page it says:

"Meet me at the park near school tomorrow morning at 9 so I can officially ask you out in person."

I didn't know what to do. I asked my sister "Did you tell her that we're moving?"

"No, I haven't talked to her since tennis ended 3 months ago."

"Here, look at what she wrote in my yearbook."

She reads the page and says "Wow..."

"What am I gonna do? If I had known earlier that she liked me..."

"Of course she likes you. Why do you think I asked you what you thought of her, back around Valentine's Day? Didn't you get the hint?"

I eventually decided that I would meet her. By the time I got there at 8:30, she was already there, on one of the swings. So I get on the swing next to her, and she says "Hi."

"Before you say anything more, I have to tell you something. I'm moving. Today. My mom, my sister and I are moving."

"Oh. To where?"

"Madison."

"Where the rest of your family is, right?"

"Yeah..."

"Damn..."

"If I had known sooner, I would have tried to convince my mom to stay here."

"Didn't your sister tell you back in February that I wanted to ask you out?"

"No, she only asked me what I thought of you. I told her that I only thought of you as a friend."

"Oh..."

"But I was lying."

"How?"

"I did really like you. I mean, I do. But I thought all this time that you were just being nice to me, since we were just lab partners, and cause I didn't have any other friends..."

"I was never pretending. If I really didn't like you, I would have just asked the teacher if I could switch lab partners. We were allowed to do that, you know?"

"No, I didn't know that."

Neither of us said anything for about 5 minutes, until she says "Do you still wanna be friends?"

"Yes."

"Good, cause I know how we can go out without it being a long-distance thing."

"How?"

"I turn 18 in 3 weeks. I can drop out of school, move to Madison, get a job and my own place-"

"No, stay in school. Don't drop out just for me."

Another few minuts of silence. Then, "Once we graduate a year from now I'll move to Madison so we-"

"How do you know you won't find someone else before then?" I was starting to think for a minute that she was obsessed with me.

"Because noone else is as kind and funny and sweet as you are."

Bullshit, I thought. But I said "Okay, if you're willing to wait for a year, then so am I."

So she gets off the swing, stands in front of me and says "Stand up."

I stand.

"Let's make a deal, then." she says. "We'll stay as friends, until a year from now, then we'll try a serious...thing."

"Would 'thing' be the technical term for it?"

"Shut up! Do we have a deal, or not?"

I held my hand out and said "Deal."

"Good." She grabs my hand, shakes, and lets go. Then she puts her arms around me and kisses me for about 5 seconds. When she stops, she says "Later!" turns around and walks away.

I sit back down on the swing for at least 30 minutes, when I hear a car horn. My sister was in the parking lot (she had a license, I didn't) with her head out the window yelling "Everything's packed, we're leaving now!"

When I get into the car, she says "So, how did it go?"

"We're just friends. For now."

"What does that mean? What happened?"

"I'll tell you later."

"Oh..."

About 4 weeks later, my sister and I decide to drive to Milwaukee for a surprise visit to our half-brother (who we never thought of in that way, we always consider him our full brother) for his 13th birthday. After all the 'hellos' and presents and cake, he asks me "What was the name of that girl you were talking to at the park the day you moved?" I told him, and then he said "That's what I thought." and leaves the room.

He returns with a newspaper, hands it to me and says "This was yesterday's. Read the first article on page one of the local section. You're gonna want to sit down." So I did.

It was about a home invasion/robbery from 2 days before where all three of the residents were killed. When it got to the part where the names and pictures of the victims were shown, I lost it.

She was one of the victims.
