Yep, usually when the story ends in tragedy or contains material that makes you feel sad, be it for the character/s or simply in general.

Thanks, but I already knew of that thread and already finished all the visual novels there that interested me (that is, Fate, Ever 17, Chaos Head, Saya no Uta, Tsukihime and Yume Miru Kusuri).
If possible, I'd like a more specific advice, even of VN's that are not listed on that topic (for example, Hanachirasu and Kara no Shoujo itself are both translated into English, yet are not present in the thread for the English-translated novels, if my memory serves me right).

Anyway, to the main topic, I just finished Kara no Shoujo with all the endings and 100% CG's, and I enjoyed it a lot. Unfortunately, it was sheer coincidence that I picked up this VN, as I knew nothing about it (and it's not the first time either - many visual novels I played, I picked up not knowing s**t about'em).
What I'd like to ask is this: given that I don't have abundant knowledge about eroge and VN titles, could someone give me the titles of some visual novels that have a good-to-very-good plot, possibly a mature-dark story, and focus more on character and story developement than random f*cking and moaning? Please suggest only English-translated titles, and don't bother to mention things with tentacles, senseless rape, NTR and the like, nor generic vanilla (yes I'm being picky =|).
To sum it up, I'm searching for another top-notch visual novel or eroge with the above mentioned specifics. Mind helping this poor lurker in his search?

Kefka, from FFVI. He's by far the cruelest villain in the whole franchise, maybe not counting ExDeath. A complete psycho who's as mad as the Joker and as powerful as a mage could become, what else could you ask from a villain?
4- Which summonable ally (Esper, GF, Aeon) is your favorite?
In terms of awesome, it has to be Yojimbo from FFX (yeah, you had to pay him, but with the right price he did the job damn well). Another one, if only for its story (which is very brief but also touching), is Odin from FFVI.

While it was by all means something original and creative, it was simply painful to master them all (and you had to if you wanted to beef up your characters enough =\). Plus, money and exp farming was pure torture, as only a handful of enemies in the whole game dropped good amount of them (and even then, you had to spend hours upon hours to gain levels).
Flaws aside, it was a very good game and I enjoyed playing it, even though I never managed to beat the final boss ç_ç . Maybe one of these days I'll wipe the dust from the disks and retry =D .
