As for trash cans you just need to know where to look, department stores, stations, etc. There are a few public ones, but not many.You need to compare and contrast. In the U.S. trash cans are a dime-a-dozen, but there's still lots of litter.

Wonder how many people in this thread have *actually* been to Japan.
For one, I really enjoy their social discipline. It's amazingly difficult to find a trash can walking around the streets of Tokyo, but there's not a scrap in sight.
